I Cycled 100km Every Day For A Week & This Is What Happened!

- After Mark's challenge of a half marathon per day over on GTN, he thought it was only fair to challenge Hank to something similar on the bike - 100km a day for a week, 700km of riding in total. Riding your bike 100km every day is a challenge for most of us, especially around a full-time job! Hank was going to need help, so we teamed up with our friends Nuzest to help fuel him with their plant-based nutrition, and Whoop to monitor the effect this challenge had on his body.

How far have you ridden in a regular working week? Let us know in the comments đ
Regular week 400km at most. Will give a shot next summer sure, sun doesn't go down until 8.30pm down under.
Vancouver to Tijuana MX in 25 days with 20+ days of 100km. Edit: While not working of course.
500 on Zwift in one day. While on Isolation
A bit over 500k last year, as part of a challenge with some colleagues to see who could bike the longest in a week. Somehow I made second place despite being overweight and usually only doing 20k a day.
It was very hard, but worth it.
We are going to do the same challenge again this year.
Maybe 300km
Iâm doing 300 miles a month commuting on a fixed gear bike 48-17 and then thereâs the weekending riding road or gravel too.

I did wonder why Hank wasn't doing the bonk challenge. Now I know why. It's because gcn was trying to kill him off with another challenge. The world's balance is restored.
đ rest assured, Hank will always be doing some sort of challenge.
haha
Haha, glad I'm not the only one who immediately felt like a mystery had been solved. (Though I did wonder whether the bonk challenge was just another way of trying to kill Hank...by making Conor hungry enough to chase Hank down and eat him.)
Next challenge:100k a day for a week with no eating!

Mark rode through my hometown in Shepparton Vic. I left work early to find him at an intersection midway through his day. Was cool seeing him and his team following close by.

There's a CZcamsr who's doing a century everyday for 10 days straight right now on his Strava. He's on day 4.
He also gets off the bike and does 10+ mile runs some of those days because he's insane or something.
Great vid, Hank is a legit tank. I did 40-50km a day for a month and that was bad. I felt like I am on the verge of collapsing, super worn out everyday. No more. Yes I lost 10kg, but that makes me weak and vulnerable to sickness.
You lack proper recovery on nutrition and over pushed your limits instead of mixed recovery while cycling
@@carlojanolino9226 Yep if he lost 10kg he just didn't eat near enough, no wonder he's worn out and weak.
I'm tempted but not care of balance as I want to drop from 107kg back to 85kg asap
From a recovery perspective, 100km and a half marathon might be about the same, but from a time commitment I'm sure they're not even close! Mark was surely sub 2:00 on most of them, so Hank is doing twice (or perhaps more) the hours in a week. Brutal.
Yeah but a half marathon without restdays is much harder than 100k on a bike without restdays
Mark Beaumont: âWhen does the challenge begin?â
@SlaveLaboringKid what?
I love these Hank videos where he's challenging himself, its super entertaining. Props to him!
I spent a month in Italy recently and biked just over 2000km in a little over a month which is less than that. The climbs there are BRUTAL, like many miles of double digit climbs like even 16, 18% or more. It's so beautiful I couldn't resist. With every ride I felt a little worse and not recovered I knew I was doing myself in. With the Italian diet I was eating top notch and on vacation I was trying to sleep as much as possible. 2 weeks after the fact and back home I am still not myself. This is definitely overtraining, but I Wasn't trying to train to get faster, I was just riding with "IT SHALL NOT PASS THIS WAY AGAIN" on my mind wanting to experience the scenery, food and countryside there as much as possible before going home. Ouch.
Great work, Hank! đ
I commute just shy of 40km a day and Iâm very new to cycling and itâs bloody brilliant
There's huge difference for the average cyclist between 40km and 100km. For most people 100km is a significant effort mostly because it's simply going to be 4 hours of exercise. Most anyone can move for an hour or two with no issues at all but between 2 and 3 hours fuel starts getting depleted and that last hour hurts. 100 miles is a whole other nut to crack.
@Stephen Charles Sorry you had such an accident. Good you're back at it.
@@sevenrats Anything over 2 hours and you really need to just bring food with. Even if it's just a Clif Bar or a spare water bottle full of juice.
@@sevenrats You forget that he is not an average cyclist. Many who are not on pro level still are like 50-60% better performing than an "average cyclist". With average I assume something like 80km a week on average (some commuting + a weekend tour).
@@ruffianeo3418 I'm an average cyclist I would say. When I race on zwift I finish right in the middle and my Strava times on long segments are right in the middle and I did a 100km (2500ft of climbing) just 3 days ago. It's not hard for me but it's no small effort either. I most certainly pace myself and make certain not to over extend on the climbs. I averaged 15.5 mph. I could go faster but I don't want to risk blowing up. Having to limp back the last 15 miles would be horrible.

I really enjoy this show and the presenters are all great, and very funny! Thank you and cycling for the great fun and enjoyment! đŽđ
That seems to be much harder than the regular bike holiday week on Mallorca where we used to do more than 600 km in 5 days each year in March but in brilliant weather conditions in group rides and not around work. That makes a big difference because I don't feel sore and not too tired afterwards. I admire the guides who do this every week over there for months and always riding in the wind. It is really tough when they are guiding the advanced groups which do an average of 27 km/h and more every day. Some of these guides are 60 years old and older. Very impressive.
So normal service has just resumed - Hanks makes himself suffer.
Good effort. The best indicator of the effort required to complete the challenge is the obvious impact on Hank's energy levels and exuberance. Hank became a normal human being for once :)
Hank after punishing himself through 100k everyday get to lower himself down to my usual energy levels
I did 30km every day for the whole January this year (average temp -4C), about 1020km in total.
I do about the same on a trail bike. It's winter here in Chile but not as cold. You hope it'll get easier the next time but, hardly is. Have shaved 5min off my average though

Nearing the end of my personal version of this challenge. Thirty one days straight, riding 50km (minimum) per day, with 5x 30 second sprints per 90 minute effort, plus
100km efforts every 7 days (x4). Just 6 days left and allâs well! Such motivational videos are worth their weight in gold! Thanks ⊠more of the same please.
Hank, just love your comments at the end that a challenge can be 20k a day, just something to stretch you. Well done!!!
Chris Hall completed a 107k challenge for the Pace Centre. Correct me if I'm wrong but it was 107km each day for 107 days.Great cause aswell. Definitely worth a look.
The fitness level of some people are insane, last year i did 100km 4 days in a row before i gave up, i can't fathom how someone could keep that going for 103 more days :D
Honnestly, anyone can. Without much training (barely zero) I went from New York to Miami in 20 days. Take in mind with gear, clothes etc etc.
Also take in mind I weighed around 130kg when I left. On all my bicycle trips we tried to average 120km a day. If I can do it, all those skinny trainer guys should easily be able to do it.
@@stevenvdstaak6682 yeah sure you did, a fit guy like Hank suffered through 100km for a week but an unfit guy can do it in perpetuity, apparantly, gonna vote for a slight doubt on that one, either you exagerating the time & distance or you werent as unfit as you think you was, or you road at Z1-2 pace at 10mph average. On some days Chris averaged 30km/h on those rides he did for 107 days. I have biked with unfit beginners and some struggle to even get up to 30km/h & some manage to keep up for about 50k (rare) before bailing. So sure, can some unfit people ride 2â000km at randonne speeds, maybe. Maybe it was unclear but those are not the conditions we where talking about here

Great work Hank, Always up for a challenge about time I took something on. Thanks for your videos helps me get inspired to get on the bike
I think Hank would also be fine without that many protein shakes đ
Might actually do better, less weight đ
He did the right thing. All that protein helps maintain muscle mass and not get cramps along the way. Look at all the insane mileage or kilometers he's running. Also, in such a cold climate the body needs a lot of fuel to keep going. Plus, he's got to run on the bike for many days in a row.
The video was an ad for the protein company.
Hank: ".... around work?"

Agreed. Disqualified đ
Right! Paid to ride!
All rides should have been completed before 0800 or after 1700. I could see a combination of the two if needs be.

How I'n gone live without extracting this idea from my mind.
Last year I took a one week vacation ... so ... 2 weekends and 9 days to be on the bike. My goal was 1000km in 9 days, but in the end managed to ride only 915.6km. Sat - 170.1km (5h 52m); Sun - 73km (2h 41m); Mon - 83.8km (2h 42m); Tue - 104.1km (3h 37m); Wed - 104.1km (3h 39m); Thur - 100.2km (3h 31m); Fri - 103km (3h 52m); Sat - 95.9km (3h 14m); Sun - 81.4km (2h 57m)
My daily fuel for this was... Cheddar cheese, bacon, red paprika, tomato, and either avocado or scrambled eggs. On the ride had some flapjacks with me, energy gel, in one bottle water and in the other carbon drink. After the ride I had some protein drink and to eat either a caesar salad or some pure chicken breast.
Additional to the rides I had an hour of cross fit training on 4 of the 9 days, so you can imagine how happy my legs were. It took 5 days for the legs to recover to a point where they felt like a part of my body again.
1000km in 9 days, still a goal.
That was tough , the gains must be huge though with load
@@flxgreen6346 I had some kind of inner peace after those 9 days. And the rides that came after that were different, I learned more about when to fuel my body, when to take a break, how to reserve energy for the tough sections of the ride.
How many carbs per hour did you do since you were so heavy on protein intake off the bike?
@@danielpspersonal It took me a few months of constant riding to say to myself "I could do it" :)

Just illustrates how hard it is to do what on paper looks ok all around work commitments. Chapeau Hank.
This reminds me of the Taiwan island roundtrip challenge. It's a 7-12 day bike packing trip, 900-1200km and 6000-9000m accumulated ascending, depending on route choices. Here it's popular not just among routine riders, but regular people too. Some even do it once a year. It can be quite a brutal challenge to those who don't ride bikes regularly, but still they always get it done.
Iâd hate to be sharing a toilet with Hank after all those protein shakes

Forgot to mention - self-employed, full-time.
When I see Hank suffering, I gotta watch.
What have you turned me into GCN?
was this a cycle challenge or an advert for Nuzest?
And not a good one at that. The stuff is supposed to replace what you have lost. Looking at Hank through the week it was failing badly. Just good old fashioned food would have worked better.
Hank! You Rock. Great Video with some really good info! On to the next Challenge...200 mile gravel grinder with no experience....hummmm sounds good mate!
Hello Hank. I like the they you are take on tought challenges and I like your training. With 5 hours a day you have about 35 hours, nearly a normal week of work in addition to the work. I have not at all been at that level, but I got flash back 40-50 years ago when everybody was amateurs with full time job in the national cross country running team and was running as much as the body could take. And by that I understand quite well how much you are streching the limit and the strain on the body from your tought challenges above what the body over time can take. You are some really tought guys, I'm very impressed and like it. Best Regards from Norway.
Normal service has resumed. Now I understand why it was Connor who had to suffer in the bonking video. Because Hank was doing this.
Good content but the advertising is pretty grotesque.
That's business, my friend.
Grotesque? Such overreaction...
Really interesting. I didn't know the sleep part would be so important for recovery. I'll factor this in when I do my own challenge soon - 30k per day for 30 days (where I might normally do 30k in a week).
Awesome video. It would be good to continue on how to best recover from this too after the stressful week.
