  • Today our new dairy cow, Pansy, is having a day out on the grass to see if we can get her starting to eat grass. We are also doing some odd jobs around the farm with our draft horses and showing an update on planting flowers around the pond.
Watch our videos to learn about draft horses- horse logging, horse farming, and horse training! Jim uses Belgian, Percheron, and Suffolk horses to do work on the farm and in the woods. He teaches about harnesses, horse-drawn logging and farming equipment, horse feeding and maintenance, and voice commands for horses. New videos uploaded every week. Keep watching to see how Jim trains his new Suffolk Punch colts as he has trained his full-grown teams!

I ended up buying a second Jersey cow because my first Jersey was so lonely. They are herd animals after all. I hand milked and found that was a peaceful time for me. I used the excess milk to feed my piglets & hens. I made lots of butter with the cream & froze it. Iove love love the creamy milk of Jerseys. Yes Pray Pray Pray....it does work.

You probably get tired of hearing this, but I love your channel for the variety of tasks that get done, from caring for your horses to logging to farming to sawing to small construction projects to Brenda's gardening and now milking Pansy.
Your channel is only one of three that I watch regularly. It's fun to learn from what and how you do things and how Abby's house is progressing with your help and materials.
Thanks for sharing the melding of old ways with new ways as you work your horses.

Everything in your greenhouse is so green and pretty!!! Poor little Pansy, I was wishing I could pull up some grass to give her through my TV screen! I've never seen a cow that didn't know to eat fresh grass! Bet you are enjoying her good rich milk though! I really do miss seeing Lady. I hope before her foal is born you can let us have a close up of her and see her get some petting and attention!!! And see more of little Bree too.

Glad you put the cow back in I was afraid she would head out to the road. Skippy was on his best behaviour with Pansy. I hated mud season when we lived in midcoast Maine. It shut down everything that was outside. I do think that if you put gutters on the barn to get the water away from the barnyard it would help the mud problems but it won't cure it completely. Thanks again for for all of your hard work to share these videos with us Brenda. Please stay safe and God bless you and your family

Brenda, with your own cow and tomatoes, give them a drink of milk. Tomatoes love calcium and milk has calcium in a natural formula. It prevents stem rot in the tomatoes along with making them more healthy. If you are trying to get Pansy to eat grass, give her some fresh grass clippings. She will love them and soon figure out where the come from.

Brenda a few things you said made some metaphors dance through my overactive Bible teacher brain. Like the basil not growing well by itself, but in a bunch, the plants did well. As Christians, we aren't thriving if we are separated from other Christians. We do better when we do life together. Even when we get on each other's nerves, we are still providing opportunities for growth, like learning to apologize & forgive, etc
Another thing that came to my mind happened when you let Pansy out of the barn to graze & she seemed unsure of things. Though she has been set free from the trappings of large dairy operation & truly is free to be herself, a cow as God created her to be, she still acted as though she was still imprisoned (trapped) in her old life on large dairy farm. When we are set free from bondage of sin, we are free indeed, but some of us don't know what to do with that new found freedo. Others of us act as if we are still in chains. Anywho, that's what came to mind. If you ever want to attend our LITTLE Bible study on Thursday mornings, we'd love to have you! We all go to different churches, so I guess you could say we are interdenominational. Really, we just all love Jesus & try to follow Him as best we can as we do life.

Jim and Brenda thank you for taking us along on your daily chores and work schedule today. Work never stops on a mixed farm such as yours. Hopefully you are able to clear up some your roof drainage issues with the gutters possibly tied into drainage tiles to help run some the water off to alleviate the spring mud in the door yards. Although I realize tiling systems are very expensive. The plants in Brenda's new green house are doing well for early spring. The custom sawing for a customer is very productive and has potenial extra income as well. William's greenhouse project turned out great and I'm sure the new owner will be pleased with it. It'll take some time for Pansy the Jersey Cow to adjust to her new role on the farm and settle in to eating grass and adjusting to electric fences . It's obvious her last home was a dairy production facility and she was part of a herd passing through the farm operation being milked 2 to 3 times a day and fed special dairy ration and dry hay. or silage. I'm sure Pansy will adjust to the farm routine with some time and care from Jim and Brenda. It was great to hear that he had your Vet visit and deal with Pansy's hoof issue . Antibiotics will help a lot and it'll heal and the lameness will subside as well.

Caltha Calustris, the beautiful yellow flower in Latin, is a sign that spring has truly arrived! 🌼 In Sweden, it's called "kabbeleka" and can be found by streams and in wetlands during springtime. 🇸🇪🌷
While the flower buds were once eaten like capers with salt and vinegar, it's important to note that the entire plant is mildly toxic, so this practice is not recommended. 🤢

Love your tie stalls and watering system for your horses . Cows ( and horse's) are herd animals . Therefor Pansy will be just fine , once let out to pasture with the other beef and horse critters . Milkiing twice a day( 12 hrs apart) by hand can be done where ever it works for you and . Pansy just needs time to adjust . This just a small thing but please remove that ear tag (3622). Pansy now has a name , no longer a number .Ah farming , great fun .😊😊😊

Hi Jim and Brenda. With the extra milk, give the tomatoes a drink of it. Tomatoes use lots of calcium. Calcium prevent stem rot on your tomatoes and keeps them healthy. Try giving Pansy lawn clipping a few times. Then put her on your lawn to graze. She will soon figure out where the clippings came from and you will take of two problems at the same time. I too come from a family of prayer warriers and never have I had to apologize for it. You guys go for it. I love those videos. Keep them coming.

So many dairy cattle have been genetically selected to use concentrated feeds (grain/silage) that they simply lack the robustness to graze.
Weak feet/legs pretty & poor mobility is common with confinement animals.
Also, selected to produce so much milk that suddenly switching to mainly grass really throws off their metabolism

Initially she may find munching on the regular hay and grass hard on her digestive system…maybe introduce a little at a time? After all Pansy does have four “stomachs” to coordinate 🤣. I saw the smoke curling up from your wood furnace and I thought , how lucky to be independent from the big energy companies . Here in Canada we are having the same wet ,cold weather . Even if I was to shut off the gas valve my bill would still be huge with the account costs . Same with hydro . And we pay a debt charge for the money they threw away , even though it`s hidden now . And now you have cream too ! Lots of silver linings around the farm .

@@cheryls3162 It is electricity . It was long generated by water behind water or hydro dams . Or at water falls like Niagara Falls .The public company here is Ontario Hydro .

Just a couple of comments: First of all, God does hear all of our prayers, and we trust in His timing. Second, Brenda, just curious if you disinfect Pansy's utter before milking? Your greenhouse garden is beautiful!

Another fabulous video, your horses are so well trained Jim, I was surprised that they pulled the manure spreader straight out of the mud it had sunk in quite a bit, I'd love one of your greenhouses but I think England is a bit too far for delivery 🐎 thanks Jim and Brenda.

You are right Jim. Burning pine in a fireplace is very dangerous. I had a friend who managed to get a flue fire going in his expensive home and it cost him a lot of money to repair the damage from the fire.

Hi Folks Love your Channel, and fallow every chance. With regards to your video where ium was commenting on stall space. could you take down the wall you have that hang your leads and jut turn your feed boxes 90 degrees so the rear ends would be nearer the water trough. Just a thought. Keep up all your hard work of a beautiful traditional life.

Without being obtrusive it would be interesting to hear about the economics of your operation- You both work so hard and put in so many hours, I hope you have good medical insurance and will be able to have a couple of decades of easy going retirement. Is that feasible for you, or do you just have to keep working the rest of your life?

Marsh marigold also goes by the more common name of "cowslip" which is what we called it. English cowslip (Primula veris) is actually a different plant than the Marsh Marigold, (CALTHA PALUSTRIS). What you have is the true Marsh Marigold. It is in the buttercup family so you aren't entirely wrong calling them that.
