I have been a Safetyman for 25 years. I have seen this, but never with large animals, always with men. The young man and his Dad in the hole was deeply concerning to me. Heavy equipment operating on the edge of the hole can lead to a grave for all in the hole very quickly. I am not judging, I would have likely done nothing different in the adrenalin rushed time you spent helping. Over my years. I have seen this kind of teamwork and heroism. God was with you that day Jim, and certainly your neighbors and horses. Thank you for your cool mind and quick thinking. Sent with respect.

Im so glad the horses are ok! I have to say I teared up just imagining the fear in the horses and their owners. I can’t imagine, wow, one on top of the other. Truly a God send that you were able to help. God has His hand in protecting the two horses especially the one on the bottom. God bless you all.

The only reason the Amish would have allowed you to film this and upload it would be to help a fellow man. Vets don't come cheap and to replace a well trained team such as these isn't cheap either. Sharing their unfortunate experience so others don't have to is a priceless gift. Bless this young couple and their community.

Wow, that was amazing! I almost didn’t watch because I was in an accident once where a drunk driver hit the carriage from the rear. I had 3 passengers with me, the horse was not hurt, 1 of the passengers got a scrape but I was the unlucky one with a head injury, 3 fractured vertebrae and some other more minor injuries. So I hope this doesn’t give me flashbacks!
So glad it all turned out well! You saved the day. I’m afraid without you that hole could have become their grave...Bless you for your level headedness and your knowledge of horses. ♥️👍🙏👏🐴

I'm glad the horses were able to walk away! Accidents happen with big animals all the time, even when you'd think nothing can go wrong or have done something a million times. Especially when working with animals, as well trained as they can be they're still animals and will react in unexpected ways. This could've been much, much worse and I'm glad it wasn't!

Thank you and the Amish family for sharing that. That was heart-stopping! Draft horses have such calm personalities. I don't think another breed would have been so chill. In a Budweiser 8-horse hitch performance, exiting the fan maneuver, one swing horse stepped over the traces, got tangled up, went down and pulled his mate down too. The rest of the horses stopped immediately and stood quietly as the leader and body pairs were unhitched. The downed horses quietly remained as they were, most of harness broken off or askew. One had no bridle. Two men crawled all over them, cutting them free. They got up onlu when prompted, and one was quietly lead out with a strap around his neck. The wheelers then took that heavy wagon out by themselves. That was the first time I saw the calm demeanor of draft horses. This pair was just the same. I expected them to struggle as they were lifted. My admiration goes to the farmer for his magnificent horses and to you for filming it.

I am thankful that your neighbour didn't loose any horses but you are right this could have happened to anyone. the main thing is the horses were fine and showing no signs of trauma as they go about being horses. The reason i love draft horses is no mater how much stress they experience they never panic they trust their masters or herd leaders absolutely to get them out of the situation they are in, horses are amazing creatures and they know when you are trying to help them i know this was taken two years ago but it is worth repeating because not all of us have amazing neighbours like you Jim and Brenda thank you both for helping out your neighbour i am sure he will be eternally grateful for what you did for him that day. Horrible, horrible, what can happen. The incident does not only show what a good neighbor you are, it also shows your great skills with the skidsteer. I must say, I did not 'enjoy' the video, because like you said, it could have ended a whole lot worse. I am grateful that the two of you showed it, though. there might be a lesson to be learned. One also has to marvel at the horses: In shock they could either have panicked, hurt each other and the people who climbed down to them or they could have had heart attacks and died. My father, who commanded a horse-drawn artillery company with 148 horses during WW II in the German Wehrmacht told me about horses which in a state of shock just gave up and died. But these two stayed calm and waited for the humans to help them out of the bad situation. Remarkable.

That black horse seemed a little stiff there in the beginning of the paddock intro but that could also have been the ground not being level. I witnessed a tree falling on horses at the local tourist attraction. The driver jumped on the horse closet to the tree and because I wasn't really experienced enough and young, I kind of wandered away. They called for the vet and the horse closet to the tree a mare named Bell was put down straight away because they couldn't really tell if she'd survive and be a good worker again. The other horse a gelding named Alex was put out to pasture to recuperate unfortunately just as he was ready to come back a snake bit him and no-one noticed until it was too late. They were Clydesdales and I live in Australia were they are extremely popular.

Were they slipping dirt? When I was 9, my dad and were slipping dirt. I just came home from school. Saw them moving dirt. I was amazed how good that all looked. Then, heard dad and uncle . One horse had pulled too fast. Jerked the slip out of ground. Cut both hocks. Dad gave him a generous feed. Vet came and put him down. Sometimes things just work the way you'd.like. They got rid of slip. My uncle was driving horses. Dad was handling slip.

Wow, what a feel good story! You know those young men felt awful for their horses! You did a good thing Jim! It’s amazing how tough and fragile a horse can be.

So glad you were able and had the equipment available to help. most people have NO idea how much a horse means to the Amish.....or any other person that owns a horse. Thanks for sharing. and thank the neighbors for allowing us to witness this unfortunate situation. Glad everything turned out fine.

That was a great recovery! Thankful you were a good neighbor!
The "scoop" you talked about is called a "slip" similiar to a wheelbarrow without the front wheel. My dad used one in the 1930's helping build roads.

I couldn't watch but a minute of the boys helping them. I started to cry. So happy they got them out and they are both ok. My family had horses when I was younger and when accidents happened it was always so frightening.

my grand dad was dump raking hay in the mid 1950s and the team spooked and took off with holding on tight, they came to a wire fence and one tried going through the fence and one did;nt, needless to say it was a big mess, those horses were so tramatized that they could not be worked again and thats when he got his ford tractor,
