  • Today I have to go up into the big pasture to get Buck and Ken and bring them in the barn. I will show you the minerals that we will start feeding to help our low selenium problem.
    Watch our videos to learn about draft horses- horse logging, horses farming, and horse training! Jim uses Belgian, Percheron, and Suffolk horses to do work on the farm and in the woods. He teaches about harnesses, horse-drawn logging and farming equipment, horse feeding and maintenance, and voice commands for horses. New videos uploaded every week. Keep watching to see how Jim trains his new Suffolk Punch colts as he has trained his full-grown teams!

    In Manitoba we have selenium poor soil too. We have free choice mineral and iodized salt blocks available for the horses all the time. I love your horse barn and can imagine I’m smelling it - that’s what heaven smells like I’m sure.

    We also place out in the field for the cattle, we put on a high spot for a little drainage, we set inside a old car tire, to keep the cows pushing it around and kepted the block , stomped into the dirt and mud .worked great, saw a neighbor doing it that way.

    What absolutely beautiful place you have. Most impressive!
    Odd note here:
    4 years ago , gave my mare some small red salt blocks+ besides regular big white salt block & was giving a small scoop of mineral supplement- big mistake on my part.My little mare hooves where cracking a lot. After reading what felt like a zillion equine research articles& asking vet..the answer was my mare was getting TOO much potassium ! Luckily we caught the problem & got rid of red salt blocks & that mineral supplement.
    Vet explained he would see real severe effects on horses from pasture that was way way to high in potassium! Who knew?
    It took a long time to get her hooves all better.
    I felt like a jerk for doing that!

    Horses are amazing creatures. Dad used them as baby sitters while doing milking chores. He’d set us little ones way up on the Clydesdales in their stalls so he could always look up and see us safe. By the time we were 4 or 5 we had learned to shimmy down their legs or tails to get down. We’d use the pony to stand up on to jump up onto the Clydes and stand up on them to pick apples. Oh the memories are grand. Love to watch your channel. Thanks for sharing.

    I'm pretty sure most all your audience knows you'd never try to scare or be cruel to your horses. Matter of fact it's probably the other way around. I remember once in a vid your daughter took the LOOONG way around the back end of Ken. A real stroll in the park. It's just a thing. Most of the time a horse don't mean to step on your foot but sometimes ... they do.

    I see the a belgian one in the barn. Have you notice if one of the belgian would be more friend with one of the Percheron. The social life of your horses does interest me. This is why, I once did ask how they dwell all four together in the pasture. Just asking, no idea of what should or shouldn't be done.

    • @WorkingHorsesWithJim
      @WorkingHorsesWithJim  Před 4 lety +2

      They don’t all get along great together, the teams do ok together but Bill gets quite aggressive at times. Since they have shoes on it would be very risky to put them out together...if they kick they can do a lot of damage.

    If that doesn't work well! Compare the Ingredients in this, it's all natural and this distributor might be in your region! What ever you do make sure the Mineral supplements are all natural, just because it says Non-GMO, doesn't mean they don't add ingredients like this Hydrated Sodium Calcium Aluminosilicate in it! Get nothing that first part of the name contains Alumin, it has Alluminum in it, and that is actually bad for human or animal brains! The site for this is bigskymineral.com/hilands-big-sky-mineral-25lb-bag/ If you will look at the ingredients they are all natural and the Selenium(immune/thyroid) is 70ppm min. and the Zinc (Immune) is 500ppm, Potassium Iodide(thyroid), and made be better than what your vet is recommending, If it's just a selenium suppliment and isn't a almost whole mineral suppliment, it does say to free choice salt separately! But they have that as well in stock! Check them out and maybe perhaps this is cheaper and better! I don't know, so you'll have to compare the ingredients! It is $54.80 for a all natural 70 minerals in 25lb. bags! Hope this helps you out! Buck is looking a lot better though! We're all rooting for ya Buck! P.S> you might be able to see if they have this in pellitized form~
