"The final poem in my selection is by one of the most celebrated writers of his generation, the Welsh poet Dylan Thomas with his spellbinding words: "
"Do Not Go Gentle into that Good Night" by Dylan Thomas
Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
And you, my father, there on that sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Csöndben ne lépj az éjszakába át (Nagy László fordítása)
Csöndben ne lépj az éjszakába át,
Szikrázzon vén korod, ha hull a nap.
Dúlj-fúlj, ha megszakad a napvilág.
A bölcs bár végül rendjén lát homályt,
Mert nem volt villám-cikázó ajak,
Csöndben nem lép az éjszakába át.
A jó, ki hullámüttön jajt kiált,
Hogy zöld öblön csepp tett is lángra kap,
Dúl-fúl, ha megszakad a napvilág.
A vad, ki naphoz kapkod s búg imát,
S ím késve eszmél: csupa kín a nap,
Csöndben nem lép az éjszakába árt.
A zord tudja, bár verje vaksiság,

Tom should have a CZcams channel where he could read poems and give English Literature lectures
Totally agree 💚 I think, he should do a masterclass: www.masterclass.com/classes/neil-gaiman-teaches-the-art-of-storytelling
God, that would be wonderful!
@@p-isforpoetry oh my god yes, I think about this often lately
that would definetely illuminate this grim and confined era

A marvelous poem, written by one of the finest poets, spoken by one of the most marvelous actors.
I see what you did there (marvellous)
I could listen to this man's voice for days on end
I loved this since interstellar and now read by him I wanna cry
When I was young this was just a very good poem. Now in my old age Tom Hiddleston’s voice reading this poem gives new meaning to a beautiful poem. Iwas not feeling well tonight but now I feel much better, but of course Tom always makes me feel better❤️❤️
The world listening to Tom Hiddleston reading Dylan Thomas is why the Internet was invented.
Thank you for all of these. Such a voice and such a talent need to be shared.
I was named after his wife, and I’ve always loved this poem!
This is a very good poem, one I have heard before but hearing Tom read it made my legs go to jelly... 😱😂
This was enough to make me cry. I've loved this poem since I saw "Interstellar" and him reading it is just so beautiful.
👍
Best reading I've heard this week.
Thank you Mr Hiddleston for your fire!!!
I could listen this forever
Loki never went gentle into that good night. he always escapes at the last minute
Omg my favorite actor and my favorite poem? I never thought this day would come!
I hung on to every word, as always brilliantly read!
The poem has become more dear to me after you recited it
Wauw this is beautiful!!! I love it that a actor loves poetry too, like I never heared of it before :D
I could listen to him forever so relaxing 😊
My favourite poem n listening him reciting it a pleasure...
And that is pure. 💜💜💜
We need to do an analysis on this poem and this audio of him reading it is definitely enough motivation for me 😩😩
I’m in love with this poem and this voice
잠자려고 들었는데. 잠이안와요...심장이 콩쾅거려서요.
What a beautiful voice...¡
Beautifully read.
His voice is amazing
Yep!
his voice is beyond fantastic
He has a gift to be able to interpret and read like that.
Here he is sadly not interpreting the poem (apart from a little bit towards the end). It's almost as if he's trying to keep the tone his fans like and keep that tone at all costs. It's a rather strange choice for an artist and rather an unfortunate choice. Apart from the original recording, I'd say Burton's was the best.
Tom is awesome but nothing compares to Dylan's original recital! It's so powerful!
Happy Birthday Tom Hiddleston!
A long time favorite of mine, well read
Pov: Loki is reading this to you
WOW really good. The gradual increase of tempo, quite appropriate
"Do not go gentle into that good night, Old age should burn and rave at close of day; Rage, rage against the dying of the light."
He could say this as Loki to Odin.
Beautiful, Tom.
I wholeheartedly eager to acquire English at that extant which could allow me to comprehend all tremendous beauty of this poem which at the moment seems to me more like a music. I can pick up some words and phrases but can't see the whole picture yet. (Although this poem stroke a chord with me anyway). Peace out everybody!
Wonderful!

39 years old he died, so young
Listen to the version by Michael Sheen. Then listen to this one. Then decide.
This is a poem I committed to memory, so I was sure I must have made a mistake - but Hiddleston reads: “you, my father there onTHAT sad height.” Minor textual thing but it jarred me since I’d memorized it.
I've heard plenty different version of this poem and this one is, by far, my favorite.
Same with me
This is my favorite poem
Now I will try to memorize this poem
Please tell me i wasnt the only one who thought of Loki when he said the last part. That controlled rage in the word "father" like he never got to say to Odin.
Good voice for reading poems imo
Once again, a marvous reading by #tomhiddleston.
I want Tom to be the narrator of my life
Fabiana Pozzobon oh agree that

This has been such a wonderful journey! Thank you so much for sharing. I'm eternally grateful!

You should hear him read sonnet no. 18 by Shakespeare, ‘shall I compare thee to a summers day’. His voice is just too beautiful ? What an amazing talent he has.

Oh My....💖
Background music is based on Chopin's Nocturne op. 55. no. 1, which I have always thought was based on a Polish funeral chant (but can't find it). Thanks for the reading.
Jeremiah 29:11

Beautifully read, I have recently experienced some losses and could not remember the rest of this poem.

@@p-isforpoetry I just answered above, didn't see your question, but yes, a student of mine has been playing it, so I was startled to recognize it!
grey clouds
I understand the arch of this poem and the character's feelings toward death, but I'm surprised by Tom's tone in the last stanza.
hmm, could‘ve had a bit more passion..
I just listened to Michael Sheen reciting this poem, and it blew me away
I think the line , wild men , who caught and sang the sun in flight . Should be read more rhythmically, when I read it I always add a little lilt to it .I realise listening to Dylans reading of this, he does not add this phrasing to that one line .
memento mori
Don't cry because it's over, laugh because it happened

This sounds like it *could* be lovely. But I loathe the background music. The poem and its voice are enough, indeed better, on their own.
Agreed!
The new Iggy pop reading brought me here.
its a reading. Not felt. hear Richard Burton read this
Whilst this is nice it by no means compares to the GREAT Dylan Thomas. Dylan or Richard Burton - my humble opinion of course.
Take another look at it, Marie. I think this is one of the finest poems in the English language, and I've read a few.
.
i don't understand why people like this so much
The people who liked, might have gone through terrible loss or felt the sense of losing loved ones in a devastating moments. Perhaps they are old and already feel darkness maybe they are young but conscious about their coincidental lives that so fragile and short indeed.
I really like the poem and Tom too. But in my opinion he didn't really do a good job with it. Yeah, sure his voice was good as always but a times there was a kind of "robotic feeling" if you get what I mean.
@@wyxxoz3955 I agree.. Great voice, but doesn't capture the soul of the poem. For example there is BBC video with various welsh actors and personalities reciting bits of the poem, and you can feel the passion of the poem, the wildness ruggedness of it, the sorrow, the forceful imperative of the title line.

Irritating. I listened to Anthony Hopkins and Martin sheen but still prefer Richard burton.

How can you read a poem like this full of anger, rage even, against bland harp music? It ruins it for me.
this is almost certaily not authentic im sure its a deep fake / text to speech
@@ryangudger91 you think there was text to speech like this 3 years ago?
Listen to Dylan Thomas reciting it. He almost sings it. There is no rage.
Such a flaccid reading. I prefer Sheen’s.
this poem is owned by Hopkins. Others seem to me always way beneath his performance.
Eat a beetle, James Ricks
Sorry but Richard Burton spoke this so so much .sorry to say only a Welsh man can read this poetry . because the accent goes with the world's.
Richard Burton is good at ready so many different poems but Tom Hiddlestone is pretty damn good. By the same token can only an Englishman read Ode to a Nightingale or only an American read Thoreau?
