Poetry: T.S. Eliot's Four Quartets - Quartet No. 4: "Little Gidding" performed by Ralph Fiennes

"Little Gidding" is the fourth and final poem of T. S. Eliot's Four Quartets, a series of poems that discuss time, perspective, humanity, and salvation. It was first published in September 1942 after being delayed for over a year because of the air-raids on Great Britain during World War II and Eliot's declining health. The title refers to a small Anglican community in Little Gidding in Hunting...

Stupid ass

it was the during pandemic, and imagine they stay in the same studio, just like we quarantine stay in the room.
Happy birthday from Tunisia Big ans wonderful actor
I lost my father in 2017 and discovered this poem about two years ago. Since then, whenever I remember him, I come to CZcams to listen to it. At the very moment I confirmed the news of his passing, life became pointless to me. I honestly wouldn't have cared if the world ended. (I know this might sound selfish, but that's exactly how I felt.) So I relate deeply to these lines: “The stars are not wanted now, put out everyone. Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun. Pour away the ocean and sweep up the woods. For nothing now can ever come to any good.” May you continue to rest in peace, Baba Alkali ❤🕊️
Wonderful.
Thank you for this post
Watching this shit in class rn
What the Thunder Said[41] After the torchlight red on sweaty faces After the frosty silence in the gardens After the agony in stony places The shouting and the crying Prison and palace and reverberation Of thunder of spring over distant mountains He who was living is now dead We who were living are now dying With a little patience Here is no water but only rock Rock and no water and the sandy road The road winding above among the mountains Which are mountains of rock without water If there were water we should stop and drink Amongst the rock one cannot stop or think Sweat is dry and feet are in the sand If there were only water amongst the rock Dead mountain mouth of carious teeth that cannot spit Here one can neither stand nor lie nor sit There is not even silence in the mountains But dry sterile thunder without rain There is not even solitude in the mountains But red sullen faces sneer and snarl From doors of mudcracked houses If there were water And no rock If there were rock And also water And water A spring A pool among the rock If there were the sound of water only Not the cicada And dry grass singing But sound of water over a rock Where the hermit-thrush sings in the pine trees[42] Drip drop drip drop drop drop drop But there is no water Who is the third who walks always beside you?[43] When I count, there are only you and I together But when I look ahead up the white road There is always another one walking beside you Gliding wrapt in a brown mantle, hooded I do not know whether a man or a woman -But who is that on the other side of you? What is that sound high in the air[44] Murmur of maternal lamentation Who are those hooded hordes swarming Over endless plains, stumbling in cracked earth Ringed by the flat horizon only What is the city over the mountains Cracks and reforms and bursts in the violet air Falling towers Jerusalem Athens Alexandria Vienna London Unreal A woman drew her long black hair out tight And fiddled whisper music on those strings And bats with baby faces in the violet light Whistled, and beat their wings And crawled head downward down a blackened wall And upside down in air were towers Tolling reminiscent bells, that kept the hours And voices singing out of empty cisterns and exhausted wells. In this decayed hole among the mountains In the faint moonlight, the grass is singing Over the tumbled graves, about the chapel There is the empty chapel, only the wind's home. It has no windows, and the door swings, Dry bones can harm no one. Only a cock stood on the rooftree Co co rico co co rico[45] In a flash of lightning. Then a damp gust Bringing rain Ganga was sunken, and the limp leaves Waited for rain, while the black clouds Gathered far distant, over Himavant. The jungle crouched, humped in silence. Then spoke the thunder DA Datta: what have we given?[46] My friend, blood shaking my heart The awful daring of a moment's surrender Which an age of prudence can never retract By this, and this only, we have existed Which is not to be found in our obituaries Or in memories draped by the beneficent spider[47] Or under seals broken by the lean solicitor In our empty rooms DA Dayadhvam: I have heard the key[48] Turn in the door once and turn once only We think of the key, each in his prison Thinking of the key, each confirms a prison Only at nightfall, aetherial[49] rumours Revive for a moment a broken Coriolanus DA Damyata: The boat responded Gaily, to the hand expert with sail and oar The sea was calm, your heart would have responded Gaily, when invited, beating obedient To controlling hands I sat upon the shore Fishing, with the arid plain behind me[50] Shall I at least set my lands in order? London Bridge is falling down falling down falling down Poi s'ascose nel foco che gli affina[51] Quando fiam ceu[52] chelidon - O swallow swallow[53]Le Prince d'Aquitaine a la tour abolie[54] These fragments I have shored against my ruins Why then Ile fit you. So true
I'd love see Helena play an American character such as the one she's portraying in this poem.
wonderfully musical
This series of posts from Patrick Stewart were one of the things that got me through COVID lockdowns. Wonderful!
So, he's basically saying, "You cheer me up." Hey, i'm better than Shakespeare 😂
Fragile. Perfect verse, perfect rose, perfect Helena.
There is so much wisdom in these lines.
Really nice, absolutely. Thanks, Sir Anthony.
The Jeremy Irons film is one of my very favourites but the odd thing is it doesn’t seem to be available on DVD or any streaming channels. I had an old VHS but who has a player for those now? I found someone had posted the entire film on CZcams and watched it recently. What a treat!
WILD GEESE made sexy
Divine. Thank you.
Way to go Shakespeare Way to go Branagh
How SCL are the only people to get Helena to advertise for them is beyond me. With her voice and persona she could sell anything. ❤
'PAW PRINTS LEFT ON YOUR HEART FOREVER". Niblo loved you so adoringly looking into your eye's and looked so happy with you a treasured moment in time locked and captured always. 😺XXXXXXX
Очень красивая природа и милый щенок!!
Hello handsome ❤
Superb translation ... and absolutely first-rate narration!
I wonder why Tennyson--in his famous poem--made Telemachus seem a dull bureaucrat (??) He seems like a noble son.
Is it possible to love a spouse ... but still be unfaithful with others and abandon him/her for 20 years (the best 20 years of a marriage)?
Well read :-)
LOL ... Big egos😤 ... but that's what it takes to win big wars.
Have we lost our way back home ... again?! 😯🙈 And don't the suitors have anything better to do with their life--for 20 years?!
My favorite Scorpio reading my favorite poet. Damn I’m not in a bad mood anymore
This scene is difficult to believe. Who doesn't recognize his parent or spouse (even after 20 years)? This type of homecoming appears frequently in literature ... and is often very artificial.
Oh his dancing is so wonderful! I love it, more please!
I love this poem. It seems wrong somehow to criticise an authorial reading but I must say I find ee's does not please. I think it is perhaps a style, very unlike normal speech which was popular in the US. I may be wrong.
He is my favorite.
I know he’s talking to himself, but still, while looking a mirror? Really.
amazing
Avoid taking ANY gifts from the Greeks 😯🫣.
I miss Mel Gibson's performance here
So ... how very different is today's elite using the masses as pawns in lucrative wars from the Greek gods doing the same with humans--for entertainment vs. profit? Not much. At all.
It's good to have a friend with godlike powers to help you in life and have your back.
All the goddesses are lovely, enchanting, and seductive. Any that are plain, studious, and shy? 😜🙃
Bad wife? Clytemnestra? Says you, Odysseus! Your buddy, Agamemnon, sacrificed their virgin daughter, Iphigenia, in order to get a good wind😯😐--and then came home with a young mistress, Cassandra!
Omg Ive JUST FOUND THIS!!! With all due respect to the rest of the cast but....EWAN AND TOM!!!!! A DREAM TEAM TO LISTEN TO!!!! 😭💖💖💖
Very nice clip love that smile. ♥️🤗🍰
This is what happens when you don't ask for directions when lost 😯😉.
Temptations everywhere! (A favorite short story by Maugham--"The Lotus-Eaters"--is so apropos.)
❤❤❤i love it
