I saw this sort of thing on ZNA productions and I was sorta shocked about it. I thought that it originally was a joke that they did, but no this is a legitimate thing!
my wife was much happier when I quit putting oil soaked steel in her oven thats for sure. i will occasionally temper large choppers or small swords in there though, but I clean the heck out of them first so there is no oil to bake off.
Where the hell is the fire extinguisher? LOL! That is the BIGGEST FIRE HAZARD I have ever seen! Stay brave my friend - but reconsider your shop layout! Ha!
Advice, I have made a blade and went to temper 400 degrees for 2 hrs, then second round of tempering 400 degree and forgot about it for 4 hours, did I ruin the blade ?
I dont think that you would ruin a blade by doing that, at most it might come out a bit softer than what you had planned as tempering is a combination of time and temperature. but you could finish grinding it and put an edge on it and test it before you put the time into putting a handle and nice finish on it to see for sure.
Great video, although I've never seen an analog powerstrip set up or the metal thing that you used to hold the knife. Could you please explain it and where I might be able to find something to hold the knife? As I need to stop using the big oven for tempering knives. Thanks
i dont know.... but you can put just about anything into a metal can, fill up the air space around it with powdered steel and then forge weld it up and turn it into canister damascus.
@@joecalton1449 I have one all apart that I was trying to order a replacement switch for. The resulting discovery was that the switch cost nearly as much as a replacement toaster oven. I was pondering possible things to do with the collection of junk; it’s a habit developed from adverse financial realities that has the gainful effect of additional knowledge of component materials just prior to throwing the damn junk away 🤪
Nickel and chromium are metals added to stainless steel that increases hardness and perhaps regular steel in some diminutive minority composition not unlike carbon for iron
So I can't afford a big heat oven, so I want to use a toaster oven. I use (1084-1095 and 15n20) Help me out here, I make kitchen knives.(1) I forge the blade,(2) do my rough grinding,(3) normalize the blade(4) heat treating in the forge,(5) finish the blade grinding,(6) in the toaster oven at 300° 60mins 2x,(7) finish polishing. Just trying to make a better blade.
that is a good basic timeline, but I would switch 5 and 6. so you heat in the forge and then quench in the oil. then temper in the toaster at whatever temperature that you have determined through testing is the best for the steel you are using, I would do a minimum of 2 hours each time for two times, then do your finish grinding and polishing. if you wait to temper until after you do your finish grinding, and you drop a full hardened and not tempered blade onto a concrete floor, it has a very good chance that it will break.
For the first 4 and half mins i was fixated on the bolt/arrow i was waiting to see a yellow and white fletching to scream out CARBON XPRESS MAXIMA BOLT. Needless to say i was a disappointed shortly after
Need a stack of oily rags to pack around those toasters for thermal insulation.

Very helpful I’m gonna get me toaster oven asap , my wife doesn’t like the idea of cooking steel in her oven lol. Thanks for info. 👍

Lol half a second into the video this is what I was thinking. He is asking for a fire sheesh
I thought I was the only one who was thinking that
A man with two watches never knows what time it is!
Man that’s a crazy fire hazard you got going on there
Thank you for the input it's really helpful.

Would have never though to base the temp on the performance...smart way to go about it. I guess i get obsessed with numbers to easily.
thanks man! the performance is the only thing that realy matters, so using it to calibrate the oven is about the best way I have found.
Ha! I just watched you and your apprentice on FiF! Just did a search on oven tempering and you popped up first.
I think you are better of setting the focus to manual and adjusting trough the live view.
Other than that very good video
doing that now

i use c channel with slots cut into it. ill see if I can make a video on them :}
Thank you for the input it's really helpful. Btw millennials this is how men look like after a long days work.
Can the spent Nichrome heating resistors get recycled into improving knife stock metals, 🤔

I like how you say brand spanking new
Are you trying to blow that place to smithereens? Lol Man my wife would shoot me dead!
Forest gump?
Thanks for a great video. I am surely looking forward to whats coming in the future.
thanks for watching!
Sir what do you mean by “ real long chopper”? Thank you!!!
Really interesting. Lots to think about and try.
Thank you.
Hello, is really a good video but please can you show to us how you doing it?
Regards,
Osha is this ok?
what kind of thermometers are you using in the oven and where can you buy them?
just regular oven thermometers, I think I got them at Walmart in the cooking section. they just need to have a range of 100-500f degrees or so

Smart guy, but, get those GD toasters off of those wood shelves
Turn off autofocus and stand on the X
I actually went with a gopro, way easier, and I think it does a pretty good job :}
Turn off the auto focus.
ok, I will try that on the next one
Spit it out buddy
Toaster ovens are not ment to be on long time? Your electric bill must be high...is their more energy saving machine on the market....
And please put the ovens somewhere else.
Do you take showers
