- November 17, 2015 by BOB BOILEN Nathaniel Rateliff and his band The Night Sweats are on fire, with concerts that get feet moving and bodies swaying, fueled by rhythm and booze.
It wasn't always this way: In the past, Rateliff would be more easily described as a folk artist. When I saw him recently at a sold-out Sunday-night show in D.C., he expressed intense gratitude for the new audience that's found him. Much of that new crowd has embraced the big-band R&B of his new album, Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats, which was produced by Richard Swift and released on the legendary Stax Records.
The record and its songs embrace not only Southern soul, but also the rockier side of soul made famous by Irish singer Van Morrison. Here at the Tiny Desk, Rateliff's body-shaking tunes take on a slightly more laid-back sound, served with a warm heart and suitable for a cold beer.

I spend an exceptional amount of time watching, listening to, and otherwise absorbing music, and I tell you this is at the pinnacle. Top .01% Some of the greatest music the world has seen.
This music makes me thoroughly, completely, unabashedly happy.

I’ve watched this a dozen times or more... the trumpet player still makes me smile. Bringing all the energy and joy to his playing. This is my favorite Tiny Desk Concert and that says a lot as I’ve watched a ton of them and everyone brings their “A” game to NPR Tiny Desk.

I can’t believe it took me this long to learn about this unbelievably talented band. But now that I have, I can’t get enough of Nathaniel Rateliff and The Night Sweats. Talented individual musicians, great musicianship, amazing voice, and a unique yet timeless sound.
These Tiny Desk performances are 1000 times better than CD/Vinyl versions.......... Stunning.
I've listened to this over 3 dozen times. I've memorized every word said.
Not the lyrics, the words between songs.
Especially the awkward laughter.
For live performances, these are always so perfectly mixed. This one especially with the number of different instruments and voices.

So glad to see Nathaniel Rateliff on Tiny Desk! Great performance. Such a great, hard working, humble guy. We had a blast filming his singer-songwriter style show in Boston a year ago. Glad to see him take off with the Night Sweats

When a band can sound this good outside the recording studio, you know they are a good band and not just another commercial gimmick.

Usually I get tired of people saying this kind of thing, but I totally agree. Seems like the current trend in rock music is revving up the old trendy engine and putting out a bunch of generic bands
They don't sound good. THEY FEEL SO GOOD, seeps into your bones good!
Especially when they are so visibly only half awake. It's a more pared down sound than usual from them - and great for that.
My 17 month old son is in love with this . If he's having a tantrum I cue this up and he's on cloud nine . He loves to sing Mellow out . He's constantly walking around singing Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo
If y’all haven’t seen them in person/live you NEED to. Last summer I saw them at a small little concert (only like 200 people at most) and it was amazing. The energy in the room and singing and jamming out. 10/10 recommend
They're great in a large venue too, we went to Red Rocks last August and they put on a great show all night

I saw them live as an opener and one of the best concerts I’ve ever been to. They did an outstanding job at the tiny desk but he comes alive when he can work a full stage. These guys are a must see
saw them a couple months ago, me and everyone i went with said it was the best show theyve seen, the whole band kills it, then he put all the lights down low and did and its still alright by himself

One of the best performances for them. You can hear each instrument and really enjoy the singers' voices. I can even hear the bass!
I saw these guys at the Deaf Institute Manchester about 5 years ago, a tiny tiny venue. They were brilliant and Nathaniel's patter between songs really drew the audience in. A super showman with a tight tight band. Go see!!

I have watched/listened to a lot of these Tiny Desk's over the past years, and It's up for personal opinion, but this is the best one. When you come on the show this is the bar.
I love the bari sax. It gives them such a full, round sound, and you never see a bari in a band this size. I'm also super-impressed that the sax players are so restrained; that's harder to maintain than you might expect. Ditto for the trumpet player.

I saw them live recently, and they had the most beautiful display of their talented horns/brass. Those instruments were perfectly harmonizing and were singing like angels. Such a talented band
You know fate is at hand when these gentlemen just so happen to meet each other, start at band and create consistent magic. So many pieces at play that blend perfectly.
I love watching these concerts as I get ready in the morning and was so happy to find my favorite band in the queue! I love their albums but have really seen them perform before and they so supportive of each other throughout their sets - giving each other thumbs up or smiling at each other when performing. It was kind of cute lol

I've listened to a lot of these Tiny Desk Concerts and I really appreciate that they will host ANYONE, so you can hear all sorts of talented new musicians you might have never heard otherwise. But this show is top of the heap for me. These guys are fantastic.
Time to go wander all over You Tube to find other live shows, then buy a few CD's for the old collection.

I'm turning 50 soon, and I first heard Nethaniel and his band about 5 years ago. I still can't get enough. I've played this video hundreds of times. He is truly a gift from God and will forever be in my top 5. Just love his music so much! Thank you, Nethaniel! Long may you live and bless this world with your gift!

I'm a camera-person usually, but wow... the audio for this performance was incredible! Almost a better sound than the album. These guys sound so good acoustic, as well.

Chris Stapleton an Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats are both equal in talent and definitely my favorite musicians today. Both groups have more meaning behind what they believe and perform with more passion. I hope they come to my city one of these days.
s o b is all over the radio, and I hardly listen to the radio (only when my iPod is left at home or I'm in someone else's car). yet I must have heard that song at least 20 times in the past week. I generally can't tell how good a musician is (unless they make obvious mistakes), but I can tell a few people in this band *really* enjoy what they do. The piano man, the trumpet player, the guy with the shiny Gibson... And the lead vocalist, for sure.

If anything, they were struggling to keep from blasting out the room with 8 powerful musicians. They are a rowdier bar type band and they made it feel like a living room jam session. Fantastic set!

The complexity of this music is twisting my brain into a pretzel.
They all look truly content together and believe in an attitude of solidarity, and dedication to the cause of making great music, which allows EACH SONG to "come alive!" Which is a testament to their artistry.

Nah, it wasn't the lick itself, it was the tonation/voicing coming together in a buttery smooth pitch.
To have acoustics ride the notes like that, it's a delight. ..all musicians find smiles within those moments. ;)
So, nailed it; perhaps, but nailed it without having to do extra work to get the pitch parallel. .. it's like "swishing" a 3 pointer.. it counts as long as it goes in, but when it "swishes", it makes you say 'hell yeah'. ;)
Luke is a world class player and sadly underutilized in this band.

At first, I was disappointed because they didn't play S.O.B. but after listening to this a couple times I respect it. S.O.B. is the song they're known for but they were just like nah our other tracks are fire too.
In an interview, last year Nathanial said they almost quit when everyone just had to love the one song he hated the most on that record. SOB is his least favorite song and if it didn't lead to people listening to other songs, they were all going to give up music.
Yeah, SOB made me turn away from their music. I thought it was a super young guy emulating the past, but hearing "Worry Me" floored me, sold me, made me a fan for life. Such talent and soul!
SOB is fun enough, but it’s really not one of their best songs musically, but it got most of us to listen to the rest. Nate used to work in a plastics factory. Can you imagine wasting this talent.
And here the first song I got was (you worry me) and ( hey mama) I heard them on a ncis new orleans episode. He must really be good if he sang on that show. My only problem is i cant find a bass cover of the song worry me :/
Especially since it's a song about DTs, and people think it's a drinking song.
