I once again read the Lord of the Rings, and during the part where the Hobbits visit Tom Bombadil, I noticed how Tolkien placed a special weight in songs, and how when they were happy, they began to sing. As if there was a clear connection between being singing and being happy.
Also, during the Hobbit after the Dwarfs sang the song, Bilbo felt a great desire to get out of the Shire and "see the Mountains".
Elves have a special connection to songs too. Always when Elves are seen walking towards the Grey Havens they are also singing. Additionally during the several tkmes visiting Rivendell, there was always some song that was sung.
Tolkien seems to have a very special relation with songs and clearly places a specific emphasis on their effect. There's loads to unpack here!

I can stomach a lot of mediocre sci-fi and fantasy, but by the end of season 2 I realized I had enough and am getting off this ride. Though I'm sure your analysis is amazing as always! Luckily, the books and video games are still intact and this bad TV show will not color my experience of the Witcher world.
As much as I love Roberts content just seems he is either easily pleased, happy to make content on any drivel he is fed or not enough of a big boy to add any extra commentary if he thinks the direction a show goes in is complete bs. Same with rings of power.

I guess I should also explain why I dislike the Witcher TV series. The main fault lies in direction, and this is tied to casting, too. None of the actors are incompetent, but not a single scene lands right. Actors flail wildly between cartoonish representations and melodrama, and I can never suspend my disbelief that these are human characters. Anything with Yennefer especially makes me groan, but even Henry Cavill, who is generally excellent (and gorgeous), gets Geralt wrong. He puts too much vulnerability, self-awareness, and even humor into a character that I have always understood as quintessentially grim. "My" Geralt always does what needs to be done, and though he can be reflective, it's strategic rather then self-gazing. This show is like a Witcher-flavored soap opera.
For what it's worth, despite its many flaws The Rings of Power can have some powerful -- and, most importantly, convincing -- moments. I do look forward to its next season (with carefully calibrated expectations).

Nice plot summary, thank you. Told by you it actually sounds quite interesting (even though it's far away from the source material). The major problem seems to be the execution of the plot, the filler / new material, the non-sensical and unnatural dialogs, complete character changes of central figures, and the complete under- (or more likely mis-)usage of Geralt and his story to make it "the Yennefer and Ciri story". Highly disappointing.
Well, at least i still have the prequel novels to read, so i'm very excited about that.
Bless you for pulling all these threads apart. Watching season 3 made not a lick of sense and I found myself hysterically laughing at certain key moments of the show because I hade literally no clue what was supposed to be happening, what side people were supposed to be on, or what anyone's goals were. Love your content, but this show unfortunately sucks. However, I will keep watching because it's reaching 'so bad its good' territory for me.
I honestly remember nothing of the first five episodes. I’ve never read the books or played the games and even *I* know something is wrong with this season.
Same here. It was boring, unclear at so many points about the character, their motivation or just the World itself. I had no idea what was happening most of the Time and the awful dialogue didn't help.
I read the books twice because I loved them so much and even I had no idea what was supposed to be going on in season 3 at times…
Some scenes are quite similar to the books, yet they have another context because they don’t work after season 2 and it just feels completely off.
Glad I checked out early from Witcherflix. I knew what was coming after a couple of episodes.

It is amazing how much sense season 3 seems so far in the way you to through it. Almost as if you created the general red line for the season, before the writers went their way with it. Beyond everything, I really think season three is an embarrassment for the Witcher world, best ignored to not hurt the lores reputation. Compliments for composing this video

In your video about the book vs tv changes of season 2, you said that an important part of blood of the elves was missing in season 2 and would return in season 3. Can you explain that?
Robert honestly you are too intelligent and some of these sorts of shows just do not deserve your time. On top of The Witcher just gutting the source material , i found this season to be flat out boring for long stretches of most of the episodes. The Witcher , The Wheel of Time & TRoP just not worth my time anymore given just how underwhelming to clearly subpar / below quality at times. As i said they do not deserve you Robert but still always interesting getting your insights and analysis.
They have added a good few things from the books, but they've changed even more. Radovid is just a child at this point, Dandelion is NOT into men, and there are plenty of creatures to choose from instead of continuously making up new monsters..
Isn't Radovid like 11 or 12 in the books? They made him older just to put him in a same sex relationship with Dandelion??

This show's plot is just so complicated. So is the writing (and hence the dialogues, names and places). Very much unlike Game of Thrones. Am starting to give up on it. But, thank you!
The scene where the wild hunt is going after Ciri I still thought that was a dream sequence because it was just shot so poorly to me personally like they just kept cutting back and forth back and forth It was just like this has to be a dream sequence Wait no it's actually happening Just kind of left out a bit there and the fuck...
The compositing was terrible (probably rushed but also terribly lit); but the sequence was so obviously edited around the fact they didn't have the budget for a stunt rider/double for Freya Allen and it was likely shot on a buck in a studio. With the right crew and budget it could have turned out as an incredibly tense sequence in homage to Arwens' ride from Fellowship of the Ring; but, alas they spent the budget on rediculus haute couture dresses. Why the hell is Phillips Eilhart dressed like a drag queen at carnival?
They apprently don't have much of a budget for horses at all since they seem to spend loads of time walking through the same stretch of woodland, standing around on a poorly maintained park trail or standing in fields. The sequence set in the north with the snow was really beautiful and under utilized but the entire Beltane party was clearly shot on a sound stage and edited in haphazardly.
Don't get me started on the episode supposedly taking place on a ferry that's been conveniently designed that you can't see anything around it or above it. Ciri and Geralt have a whole conversation looking out over the water and discussing the bubbles the monster is making as the way to identify it; cool Witcher stuff, but we don't get a reverse shot at what they're looking at or even a shot of a composited in horizon. The monster they fight is well done but it's CGI spectacular dumped into a visually boring location with the most annoying side characters that anyone could have possibly conceived of. 0:02

I feel like s3 is definitely doing a better job following the actual story. Ciri seems like less of a up and coming ho like she was going in s2. Theres some slow spots in s3, but i dont think thats necessarily bad, the books arent always action. There are some poorly written in plot holes, but thats unnavoidable to some extent, especailly as trashy as the first two seasons were written. In a nutshell, i feel like s3 was done well enough that it genuinely reignited my interest and reopened the wound of Cavill leaving... Some of the production quality seems to have dimmed, yennefers makeup and wardrobe are starkly different than s1 and s2 post transformation, almost homely looking in s3 (not saying anything against the actress, Anya is gorgeous). For all the improvement theyve made, idk if i can forgive Dandelions character assassination. The sad part is you can really see how disingenuous his acting is now in s3. Introducing Gallatin (a likable character) only to kill him off is just cheap writing that belongs to GRRM and GoT.
Love the video essay; it’s more comprehensive, coherent and interesting than the Netflix series itself 👍

It's definitely better than season 2 for sure, but is that really saying much here? I mean, they brought prostitutes to Kaer Morhen last season...

Well I enjoyed it. Last season _was_ scattershot in quality and tone and I'd lost interest, but I'm glad I gave it a chance. Pretty complicated but felt like everyone is headed towards their logical end. Looking forward to the finale.
It's horrendous, what they've done with the source material. Hurts doubly as the saga is based on the folklore of the Slavic peoples and the books are from the same country I'm from.
I just couldn't stomach this season. The opening treatment of the epic dear friend letter broke me. It missed the entire point. The books are so rich. Also, they skipped over so much and created
I really loved season 1, season 2 was different, but tolerable… but season 3. I can see why Henry would want to leave if that is indeed why he left. This season felt like it was jumping all over the place, the number of times characters have left each other, only to instantly turn around and try to find each other again. For the first time watching anything, Character movement was completely jarring and pulling me out of the story.
And thats only one issue

Why did Ciri’s parents leave and why did Ciri’s father turn against his mother in law, the Queen of Cintras? Why not just return to cintra and reveal he was alive and request his daughter live with him?
I'm your typical Witcher fan. Read the books, played the games, finished The Witcher III like six times. Heck, I'm even from Poland, so I could withstand more and simply watch it because it's our national fantasy, everyone knows it. I could not get through the first episode of season 3. That speaks volumes for me. It's so bad it's sad.
I could say I enjoyed the 1st season, 6/10 for me. I straight out laughed many times when watching season 2 go into more dumb and dumber plot points, and now, seeing how they are utterly trying to somehow mimic the books and epicly failing along the way. It is cringe, it is not subtle nod. And all "original" stuff added is the sole reason for me that this show should be canceled after season 3. Not because of Henry Cavill leaving. But there is simply no talent attached to this mistake of a show.
How about those sorceresses though? I thought they were not pretty before they became magic users, and then they use that magic so they would appear otherworldly beautiful, in order to easily manipulate northern rulers. Yes, Margarita, I'm speaking about her. And every other female mage in that show. Pathetic.
Hopefully the writers are still on strike when season 4 is written. We might actually get a coherent story.

I couldn't even finish the first episode. I've seen so many people praise the show's intricate plot and how well-written it is, but I suspect those people are actually robots.

Netflix really screwed the pooch on this. Each season gets worse and further from the source. I have Netflix but will not watch this season. I lost my give a sh1t last season...

I have this first part of season 3 very frustrating. I enjoyed session 2 so much that i instantly rewached season 1 and then 2 and it enriched them both. Going into season 3 I became disappointed, quickly.
The intrigue is not cleverly written, the action is too sparse, and it lacked the character moments needed to keep me interested in these people.
I think the cast are doing their best with what they're given but the writing and direction is so poor that our cannot help but detriment their performances.
I truly have to respect and appreciate your position here. You really really tried to stay objective and comment only on what's factual in the show. But please, do not feel shy or scared of simply admitting that Henry Cavil is the only good thing about this show and that it all should be burned down regardless. The writers are an absolute joke and should be banned from writing a poem, let alone a movie or series and the director and producer should retire to grow grass on a field for cows to graze. But again, your decorum describing this flop and making it sound like it's actually worth a Hobbit's crap is 1000% commendable

I could only make it through the first 3 eps and had to stop. They've just gone too far away with it and given they've made Geralt basically a side character now, I am not going to go back to it. I also have struggled with some of the casting from the off and struggled to really love the show. Guess I'll be sticking to the books and games, so happy days.

The Witcher S3 pt 1 is still dudu.... just like S1 and S2. It's all just horrendous in general...
Its a terrible show. The first season was average at best and the second season was dreadful. This season is slightly better than season 2 but lets be real its still crap.
I'm done with the Witcher. It has gone too woke. Lesbians, gays, women stronger than men, most men are all evil, and so on.
Terrible writing and pathetic pandering. They must have taken advice off the 2 Davids on how best to ruin a show with absolutely incredible source material
Season 2 started to get pretty bad, but season 3 is almost unwatchable. I couldn't even get through the first episode. Even the cgi sucks now - it was better in the first season.
I bailed after 2 episodes. Too much woke garbage not following the books.
