    Wow WTF mate 6000 Baht?? I got my car and motorcycle license in my wife’s province of Bueng Kan, did them both in a day. Cost from memory about 150 Baht each for the cards. All I had to produce was my Australian driver licence translated to Thai, International driver license, my yellow book, did a questionnaire test online, a perception test, eye colour test and reflex test for accelerator an breaking.
    Was so easy

      I have lived here 13 years and seen countless fatalities, it is usually though in two categories, Tourists that come over here, some never having ridden a bike in their life and hire one as it is the easiest way to get around, many of them think the roads are made of marshmallow here and don't wear helmets..
      the second are the Thai's themselves they seem to have just a low value of life, they are terrible drivers, they merge without looking, without even indicating...
      I remember seeing a tourist on the back of a scooter with her boyfriend, they had an accident and she was wearing open toed sandals, the foot rest peg split her foot like a pari of tongs..
      people seem to forget their brains ,
      Mix in alcohol, holiday mindset and unfamiliar roads and the ER departments of Thai hospitals are full of road accidents.
      I would urge everyone to at least wear a helmet, shoes and long sleeve shirt like Adam does.

      In cities like Pattaya and Patong, if you stay there short term for like a week you might think that they don't have ticket enforcement because they didn't set up checkpoints that week. If you stay long term for many months or a year you will realize that they enforce laws sporadically with crackdowns and you really do need a drivers license to drive a motorbike and avoid daily 1000baht fines.

    1. Can I get a Thai license without having had an international driving license? I have a valid Texas license. 2. Can I get a motorcycle license without having had one before in the US? (If I do that crap, better believe I'll get some training. But I rode dirtbikes for years.) ~~~ I'm nomadic so it is very hard/costly/inconvenient to go to the US and get an international license. 5 years on the road. 6000 is cheaper than 1 day in any hotel room in the US nevermind the flight to Texas.

    • @mestizo_asia
      @mestizo_asia Před 29 dny

      Yes to both questions. Having a valid US state drivers license means you wont have to take the driving test. Since you don't have a Texas motorcycle license, you will need to take the test. Not to worry, its basically a formality. Each region is different, but in Chiang Mai the motorbike driving test is essentially weaving through some cones at low speed and driving about 10 meters on an 1"x12" board without falling off. But if you fall off, you just circle around and try again. The only people I saw have problems with the test are a couple of foriengers who showed up on big Harley bikes (for a course designed for agile little motorbikes).
