A couple of other things about the 1936 race. First, it was the first race run after significant parts of the track were paved with asphalt, leading to it being, by far, the safest Indianapolis 500 of that era. No driver or riding mechanic lost their lives during that entire month, which was a welcome change after the bloody races in the years leading up to the '36 race (5 people lost their lives in both 1933 and '35). Also, every car in that race was limited to a capacity of 37.5 gallons of gas for the entire race, and quite a number of cars couldn't make the distance. In addition, an incredible record that may never be touched began with that race, as Ted Horn, who would never win the race, began a streak of NINE consecutive finishes of fourth or better with a second place finish in that race.
