This was the first of Natalie's singles I bought at the time of release. While 'Torn' was very good in a mainstream, commercial kind of way, I felt 'Big Mistake' to be outstanding. Just so powerful and moving on so many levels.

Such a good song from a great album. It's a pity commercial radio stations in the UK only ever play 'Torn'. Don't they know she released other songs too?????
They should do as 'Big Mistake' was a No. 2 hit in the UK, just like 'Torn'. This said, 'Torn' stuck around in the charts for months and sold close to a million copies, while 'Big Mistake' was a flash-in-the-pan success - only spent two weeks in the Top 10 of which one at No. 2 and one at No. 6.
Commercial radio stations tend to play it safe and go for the favourites of the crowds, though, don't they? 'Big Mistake' is artistically outstanding, but little remembered these days probably, unless you were around in 1998 and paying attention.

This video made me go out and buy Left of the Middle almost instantaneously, as I was never into Torn when it came out. Problem is I later fell in love with Torn and am still obsessed with it 22 years later. Bring back the 90s please!

I'm watching this video after many years and just realize than it was made in Barcelona, awesome!! when I watched this video on tv for first time I was a kid in my country, never thought than I'd spend my best years in the city where this video was made. I believe I was about 12 years old when I first saw Natalie on TV. Still a kid, but instantly fell in love with her. She'll be performing in Belgium a week from now, not too far from where I live, and I would have loved to go see her live, but unfortunately cancer got in the way.

As someone who practices with EFT, I really like how thoughtful the lyrics to some of her songs are. They really highlight the pursuer-distancer dance some couples find themselves in. In this particular one, it sounds like she's singing from the perspective of a burnt-out pursuer.
