Come on, they couldn't have bashed us over the head any harder with imagery explaining how much she wishes she can turn back time. 75% of communication is non verbal, this is the same with music videos as well. The lyrics make up for 25% of the songs meaning. The rest 75% of the cinematography, music beat and tone, show the real picture.

Met my ex-boyfriend 7 years again after we broke up. It was amazing how fast we connected with each other again. We talked for hours nonstop with each other and it felt like we had never left each other. We're cool with each other now and we have both moved on, but there are still times when my heart races and my stomach fills up with butterflies like the first time we dated.

The song is about Tony Kanal, guitarist from No Doubt, whom she dated for some time until he broke up with her. She was married to Gavin Rossdale at the time the song came out. "Don't Speak" is about the breakup with Tony Kanal. I remember learning about that song's origins from a magazine when I just started college (no internet or social media back in 1995!). Hearing these old songs is so nostalgic... makes me long for a time that we can't go back to, when things were simpler and the world wasn't so fucked up.

It's easy to idolize this kind of relationship..and it's beautiful to see..but it's not possible for everyone. Sometimes, the best thing you can do for both of you is truly forget one another and move on.

And i feel like that type of thinking is in itself idiolize. Why because people don't want to be truly happy and obsessed with pain. There is no reason why this type of relationship shouldnt work. Why it doesnt because people are inherently selfish and want their cake and eat it too or refuse tp move on. If you cant picture yourself in this type of relationship then you haven't truly moved on and are not confident enough to. Obvious exceptions are for abusive/toxic relationships but thats it.

I used to take the song literal, but then when I watched the video closely, you can see that it's not completely cool and it will always be difficult. But if you really love and respect the other two people, you will try to deal with it. At least that's how I feel. This song really reminds me of my ex-boyfriend. We were dating when this song first got released back in 2005. We were only teens at the time. He really loved this song and so did I. He always talked about how cool it would be if we were still cool if we ever split up everytime we heard the song. I always told him not to talk such nonsense, naively thinking we would never break up. Anyways, we ended up parting ways. Didn't see or run into each other for years. We eventually ran into each other years later as adults and it wasn't awkward or anything. We hugged each other like we were old friends from childhood and chatted for a bit. But before we parted ways, he said to me, "We're cool, right?". I smiled and replied "Always". Thinking of the Gwen song we both adored as teens.

Anybody who has ever loved will know she handled this gracefully and mature in the video, but can also see there is some nostalgia and longing there in her eyes for the times that she once shared with Tony Kanal. As is what is happening to me with my relationship now gone. It's bittersweet to say goodbye to what you once were together because there are sweet memories, but also there is longing in the goodbye. Not in my case, but to hers Gwen stefani had to put her foot down, but putting the foot down doesn't mean there is zero love.
