I wonder how much of the influence of the movies impacts our sympathetic view of D as a complex, redeemable character? The building blocks are there in the books/cannon, but the movies, I think, bring it forward in technicolor. As an example, if you have access to the HBP (book/movie 6) soundtrack (I have access through prime music), listen to two pieces: malfoy’s mission and slughorn’s confession. The pieces are so similar, you could superimpose one over the other and they would create perfectly aligned countermelodies to each other. Both are haunting melodies featuring flute that just rend your heart with compassionate emotional response. Interestingly, both are anchored by association with a fleeting, sweet animal flickering in and out of life/existence (bird as a testing object for the vanishing cabinet & the goldfish that blossomed from a leaf and then flickered away upon Lilly’s death). One piece is played over scenes of Draco fixing the cabinet to save his mother, and the other is played when Slughorn is wrestling with doing the right thing/confessing (to Lilly’s son) past wrong in order to further Dumbledore’s mission, and finally making the right choice based on Lilly’s purity kindness and love. So both pieces express/explore similar themes IMO: 1) sacrifices and hard/impossible decisions made based on a mother’s love (remembering Lilly’s sacrifice, also Lilly’s influence over Slughorn’s decision, also the impetuous for saving Narcissa driving Draco’s decision/choices), 2) anguish and regret over “evil” choices made under duress (Draco anguish over 6th year actions and slughorn’s regret over sharing info with V in the past and over concealing the memory in the present) 3) loneliness/isolation of the wrong-doer (Draco & Slughorn), 4) sympathy, hope, and possibility for redemption. Really, it’s an odd piece in the movies-here Draco is portrayed doing this evil thing (fixing the cabinet), so one should expect the soundtrack to be dark, ominous, foreboding, etc., encouraging the viewer to fear and hate the perpetrator and to “root for” the demise of the mission, but instead the music evokes exactly the opposite reaction from the viewer. It is such an odd piece of music because it makes the viewer care about the perpetrator and want to help or comfort or save him and, even against all logic, to be “rooting for” the success of his mission (viewer weirdly finds themselves pulling for the cabinet to be fixed). I’m not sure I can untangle the movies from the books in my head, but I really feel like the movies achieve a heartfelt sympathetic connection with Draco and Draco’s entrapment in a tragic conundrum that is not as strongly communicated or even not present in the books.
omggg nobody has ever pointed out the parallel between slughorn/draco and the animals to me before you are TRULY one of a kind 😭😭😭 i'm going to pin your comment so others can see this great pov too!!!
100% EXACTLY. This CHILD went through the same amount of trauma as Harry, without the MASSIVE support system of real friends, the Weasleys, Lupin and the Order, and freaking Dumbledore himself, but people still think he was a mean bully, come on! His family was terrorized by Voldemort. I’m so glad that fan fic writers have given him the redemption he deserves. Draco forever. 💚
yessss the amount of love/care/support that would have helped draco 🥹 he was a CHILD too and unfortunately only narcissa seems to notice that 😭

Happy Birthday to D! For some reason one I couldn’t get out of my mind when watching this vid is Between Certifiable and Bliss by heyjude19. Been a while since I read it so not positive how well it fits in this category, but what sticks in my head is that in 6th year D gets this hazy fleeting glimpse of what life could be-at first it makes him angry and in despair because he couldn’t imagine ever reaching that point of peace and bliss, so that image was just cruelly taunting him with what he couldn’t have . . . but through the years it gives him something to strive for as he sheds the toxicity weighing him down and comes closer and closer to becoming the man who could belong in that picture and who could deserve that life. Also bouncing around in my head is one where time has skipped so the story doesn’t necessarily take us through D’s character arch but rather shows us who he is by the time he has morphed into just a good good man: The best of me by mrsren. Both of these feature a D striving toward a dream of domesticity featuring (cherry on top) an adorable son.
i think you are right - it is between certifiable and bliss by heyjude19 😍 i love stories where draco is given the chance to see what could have been - non-war fic but one each night has this element too 🥰
