Not really true -- it spent the third minute talking about both the screen and the exterior design of the phone -- but I'll take your point. I only use the camera every few days, so I'd prefer to see a more balanced review.
that's the only thing that's really changing from year to year. most flagship phones have been perfectly fine in software and performance for a while now, there isn't that much to set them apart beyond personal preference and cameras
Yeah I'm with you. I almost feel like they should just quickly say if it's good or bad and if they like the features and then do an entire separate in depth camera review.
I just gotta say, the pixel 7a and 8 in all of their colors have a design that is really reminiscent of the way Apple designs products. The newer Pixel phones just look so good both in software and hardware.

I'm finally retiring my Pixel 4a (no more google or security updates) and ordered the Pixel 8. I got the black friday deal ($150 Off), which really sealed the deal for me.
Question❓ The internal memory is 138 GB. But if i'm right most companies have alreasy used part of the 128 GB. My question is how much is realy available for the user on the pixel 8❓
The most important tests are often never done which is signal tests and uptime tests. The Exynos modems for the Pixel 6 and 7 had major network issues. Had a Pixel 6 dozens of times a day no signal at all up to 20 minutes at a time on both ATT and T-Mobile even in populated cities around DFW. Same sim cards in a $50 UMX phone didn't have those issues. Got it RMA'ed same exact issue with a different Pixel 6 device inspected. Others had 3+ RMA's and just ended up giving up selling the phone for a loss or traded it in which is what I had to do too. Google only offers to keep doing RMA's. Every review for every phone should do signal DBM comparisons and other tests that are the main point of a phone.
I'm coming from the Pixel 5. With Android support ending, and working with AI, I wanted to experiment with the new chipset. But the camera upgrade and comfortable shape and seven years of support and Verizon deal is what really drew me in. Very smooth transition so far, excited about pushing the ethics envelope with AI images! :)
The pixel 5 is an incredible device. 6 and 7 was pretty bad compared to it in terms of design, and that was the reason I still rock it today. I'll probably switch to the 8 too soon though

It's screen doesn't run at full resolution by default. - Its back is much more slippery. So I have to consider what to do about that. - For whatever reason the smaller 8 series phone has all kinds of things worse (mic apparently, camera, camera software, ram) so that I felt like I needed to go with the bigger version. - Switching over from my broken 5 was not seamless, as the cloud backup lacks all kinds of App data. - For some reason my Assistant still uses last years much worse read aloud implemenation, rather then the new one, which was one of the reasons for which I bought the phone. - There is no public roadmap where I could look up if this will still come to my region of the world. - The AI chip definitely won't hold up with new AI features 3 years+ from now that will require the then available faster AI processors. So much for it being a long lasting phone. - The selfie camera is bad at low light, and so is face unlock which depends on that. - Fingerprint sensor is not up to the competition from what I understand. I haven't tested it much, but others are supposed to be better with wet fingers. - Some features are deliberately limited to some phones, even though they could run on others, like the Pro camera software. Which is an issue for any 8 Pro user as something similar can be expected with the next iteration of Pixels. - The sound on the Pro is not great at max volume. (8 is fine) - The bezels are much worse than even with the P5. - Some Apps, like the news feed, are clearly optimized for the lower resolution and thus display black bars on their sides. - The temp sensor is now not supposed to be used for its main intended function (body temperature reading), but Google has not clearly stated why that is I believe. When entering temp in the search bar it doesn't display anything, even though I've installed the app. - Current Pixel phones have a non-removeable search bar at the bottom locking in Google services even more. - There are some reports on camera artifacts caused by post processing in high contrast conditions. - The typical HDR high contrast Pixel photo look is now being pushed even a step further. Which in some instances already makes pictures look a little like comics. - The camera slows down when shooting at full 50MP resolution. - Many features are only announced. E.g. some of the video enhancement features. (night sight, and that special pro video mode) - Summarize is actually quite bad. - The implementation of AI speech output is not consistent / well integrated. Multiple menues where one can change voices. - Google does not clearly communicate details about the hardware. E.g. it's unclear whether the phone uses the same screen as the new iPhone, which however now seems to suffer from severe burn in issues. - There is a ton of small features that have been added. And you can click yourself through many of them in the tutorial. But many of them hide in small submenus, rather than being integrated into existing functions. Which at least in some instances seems possible. Reminds me of productivity software that gets more and more functions until every menu is so loaded with information that using the system as a whole becomes cumbersome. - Then there's the weight. Didin't Steve Jobs once say "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.". Well, certainly not the way the smartphone industry makes these devices heavier each year. What's good? - The camera is still one of the best feature. - The macro much better than with my old 5. - Of course it's a bit faster. - There will be new AI features coming in future years. - 7 years of Android updates. - The screen is bright. - It at least has some kind of face unlock. Which does work well under good lightning conditions. - The background image generation works better than expected. - The stereo sounds really great, but only when holding the phone sideways. - Dictation works better now. - Some of the small features have good reasons to exist. (E.g. there is a fall detection, and other protective features.) - Some of the image manipulation tech can do stuff. Like enlarging and removing. - Some call assistant functions are nice (weighting on a hotline gets easier), but not available outside the US. But it's still 1100+€. I'm not sure how much I really care about that. But I don't feel, given all the questionable design decisions, that this is a throughly well designed device. I feel mixed and am very seriously considering going back to the 5er. AI is so new, that they haven't really figured out what to do with it yet. And how to do it properly. There was a recent Sundar Pichai interview in which he, as clearly as it can be expected from him, stated that AI in the beginning wasn't that great yet. Which is as much as saying that he is aware of how limited their own devices still are in this respect. I'm not sure, if they really are going to give us what we would find useful on the Pixel 8 in terms of AI that actually processes language. At least when it comes to on-device implementation.
It's 5 days later. Everything is going fine; Caseology tempered glass for the screen and case (made in SK). Only negative is the phone gets pretty warm doing normal things. Will the case make that worse, or better? We'll see. But battery life, call quality, the basics are fine.
The Pixel 8 really improves on almost all the aspects that I hoped: Long support, smaller size, and hopefully better everyday usability. I'm confident that most of the issues of the 6 and 7 range are resolved by now: bad efficiency, unreliable radio and auto-brightness. The only thing I miss is a telephoto lens...
I'm awaiting delivery on mine now! I'm trading in my Pixel 4a5G and with only one security update left, the timing was perfect! I'm loving the 7 years of Android and security updates!

I currently have the pixel 7 and the only reasons to switch would be: pixel 8 is smaller, magic editor, face swap and audio eraser. (I know I got the names wrong but you know what I mean) . My question is, wont they give most of those features with android updates? Or it will be limited to pixel 8/8 pro only and forever lol
Supposedly there are a lot of features that are locked for Pixel 8 but are already available on Pixel 8 Pro. Don't know if those features will unlock with the feature drops in the future but it's pretty silly that there's features that are available for the Pro but not the regular 8, when they both have the same chip and same main camera. Sony has a big phone and compact phone that both have the same features and same chip.
It’s 100% going to come to Google One. These things are not phone related and are timed exclusives just like magic eraser and will come to all phones eventually… including those using iOS and subscribed to Google One. It has nothing to do with the specs of the phone. I love the pixels but this isn’t talked about enough

I bought the 7A but after using it for a few days and watching some reviews I decided to go for the 8 and I don't regret it,it was worth the extra loot to me,but if you are on a budget the 7A is still a good phone,I just splurged because I used my old phone for 4 years and I plan on doing the same with this one.
Now that our mobile phones are pretty much our primary phones, I would like to hear more about the phone itself. Call quality, battery life, years of updates, storage, etc. are more important to me than the camera. The camera is what we hear about the most and quite honestly, I don't find my Pixel 4a5g to have the greatest camera for night shots. It always brightens the sky and the pictures do not look natural. Shots of the moon also do not look natural. It just feels like we are spending close to 1000 dollars for a camera. These phones take good pictures overall. Focus on the other aspects of the "phone" in reviews.
This felt more like you were just explaining the features rather than actually evaluating the product. It's informative for some, but I wouldn't call it a review...
I'm not a fan of the camera AI trickery. Seems like a gimmick. But I guess some people will be into it... or you can just not use it if you don't like it. The audio filter is more impressive to me.
Face swapping is an essential and constant practice by pro photographers. We use adobe to do it, along with tons of other edit moves. Unsure why people are creeped out.

After mulling it over for quite a while, I decided to add a line to my family plan. Everyone has an iPhone but on rare occurrences a phone has completely run out of battery or been dunked in a bathtub...I've thought how handy it would be to have a spare phone, just a basic phone, at the ready to jump in and provide a lifeline until the lost/damaged/stolen phone was replaced. I thought having an Android device again would be refreshing since I started out my smartphone life with that format...I decided on the new Pixel 8. I like that it's stock Android, the size is right, the battery is BIG and the reviews are positive.
Hey thanks for the review and I pre-ordered mine at Best buy where they gave me 450 for the pixel 7 which I would have kept if it hadn't gotten so darn warm all the time even when I'm home using Wi-Fi I think some people got really good pixels and some people got the bad lottery and so if my Pixel 7 was running like some people's where it's really good I don't think it's worth the trade-in right now but mine even at home it struggled to make it through a day even with just on Wi-Fi so I I'm hoping that the pixel 8 I get a better one
I have one and I love it! I'd go with the pro because battery life in the 8 isn't that great. It's not horrible, but I upgraded from a 4XL and battery is only slightly better on 4G and worse on 5G /:
Audio magic eraser is impressive! I wonder if this will work too on a concert and eliminate those crowds singing and shouting and only focus on the artist's music?
Google is really coming into its own like no other company has yet with its phone. It's truly becoming fluid . Fluid like Apple has always tried to be but this fluidity is a true match of software/hardware that actually is seamless .
One thing i noticed on my Pixel 6 was that that 128 gigs isnt enough.Ive gone 256 gigs with pixel 8 .I love the camera so much that i soon fill the phone up .Personally with 128 gigs it would not last me 7 full years hence went 256 gigs

I'm still on the pixel 4XL. I still can't get over losing my unlimited storage on my phone photos and videos.

5 days later, almost 2 weeks into the phone. Experience has smoothed out and am very happy with the phone.

A lot are possible due to the Tensor 3 chip so maybe limited to the Pixel 8 series.

I bought the 7A but after using it for a few days and watching some reviews I decided to go for the 8 and I don't regret it,it was worth the extra loot to me,but if you are on a budget the 7A is still a good phone,I just splurged because I used my old phone for 4 years and I plan on doing the same with this one.

Now that our mobile phones are pretty much our primary phones, I would like to hear more about the phone itself. Call quality, battery life, years of updates, storage, etc. are more important to me than the camera. The camera is what we hear about the most and quite honestly, I don't find my Pixel 4a5g to have the greatest camera for night shots. It always brightens the sky and the pictures do not look natural. Shots of the moon also do not look natural. It just feels like we are spending close to 1000 dollars for a camera. These phones take good pictures overall. Focus on the other aspects of the "phone" in reviews.
This felt more like you were just explaining the features rather than actually evaluating the product. It's informative for some, but I wouldn't call it a review...

I'm not a fan of the camera AI trickery. Seems like a gimmick. But I guess some people will be into it... or you can just not use it if you don't like it. The audio filter is more impressive to me.

Face swapping is an essential and constant practice by pro photographers. We use adobe to do it, along with tons of other edit moves. Unsure why people are creeped out.
The head swap feature has been available for at least ten years I think on computer. They finally put it in a phone!

Need to know if the signal is better on the 8 compared to the 6 and 7. They were definitely sub par for a lot of people! 👍
If you're having issues with signal try use LTE not 5G + that might also help with battery

After mulling it over for quite a while, I decided to add a line to my family plan. Everyone has an iPhone but on rare occurrences a phone has completely run out of battery or been dunked in a bathtub...I've thought how handy it would be to have a spare phone, just a basic phone, at the ready to jump in and provide a lifeline until the lost/damaged/stolen phone was replaced. I thought having an Android device again would be refreshing since I started out my smartphone life with that format...I decided on the new Pixel 8. I like that it's stock Android, the size is right, the battery is BIG and the reviews are positive.
Hey thanks for the review and I pre-ordered mine at Best buy where they gave me 450 for the pixel 7 which I would have kept if it hadn't gotten so darn warm all the time even when I'm home using Wi-Fi I think some people got really good pixels and some people got the bad lottery and so if my Pixel 7 was running like some people's where it's really good I don't think it's worth the trade-in right now but mine even at home it struggled to make it through a day even with just on Wi-Fi so I I'm hoping that the pixel 8 I get a better one

I have one and I love it! I'd go with the pro because battery life in the 8 isn't that great. It's not horrible, but I upgraded from a 4XL and battery is only slightly better on 4G and worse on 5G /:

Google is really coming into its own like no other company has yet with its phone. It's truly becoming fluid . Fluid like Apple has always tried to be but this fluidity is a true match of software/hardware that actually is seamless .

One thing i noticed on my Pixel 6 was that that 128 gigs isnt enough.Ive gone 256 gigs with pixel 8 .I love the camera so much that i soon fill the phone up .Personally with 128 gigs it would not last me 7 full years hence went 256 gigs

It's pretty much silly that the Pixel 8 has features that are locked out the box and the Pixel 8 Pro has all the features available already. Like why does the Pixel 8 Pro have a pro mode but the Pixel 8 doesn't, when both have the same chip and same main camera? It's stupid.
Apparently the standard 8 is getting manual camera / pro mode in a future software update

Information, the Google Pixel 8 Series does not have a cooler/heat distribution chamber. Hence the Performance of Google Tensor G3 is dubious
