You know why I REALLY hate this scene? Despite kinda digging the show? It’s the fact that Olafs irl death was a lot more epic and powerful. Olaf wanted to plunge Norway into Christianity, and he intended to do so with bloodshed. But a proud pagan chieftain named Thorir The Hound, dealt him the final blow at the battle of Stiklestad. After his fellow chieftains got a piece of Olaf. Yes it was a short lived victory. But it was an awesome display of a people fighting to preserve their culture from outside influence. Thorir was a hero who should be remembered. But instead, he gets completely glossed over.

Wasn't Thorir loyal to Cnut who was also a christian as Olaf albeit for political purposes but still he served Cnut despite being pagan, Cnut ended up unifying Denmark and Norway under christian rule and after that Thorir most likely converted so ultimately it just proves religion is a tool of power rather than faith be it polytheism or monotheism.

According to legend, when the men who killed him were splattered with Olaf's blood their wounds were healed instantly. This is one of the reported miracles that led to Olaf being pronounced a saint.
The show runners could have done a lot of cool things with this show but decided to focus on girl power and gratuitous interracial sex scenes. In that regard I'm glad most of the villains in this show were all Christians since the good guys (besides Harald basically) were all so 21st century and embarrassing.

@@PaganRyan28 No, this is nonsense absolutely ahistorical. Evidence, and without precision, there can never be any understanding, shows that women were fighting. Overall, a handful of graves had been found with women and battle gear. The mythological tales of the Norse talk of shieldmaidens. There is no proof whatsoever that women fighting had been more than an absolute exception and no proof that there were ever organized female groups. Regarding the difference in strenght, it would not make any sense.

@@PaganRyan28 No. The only evidence is that written by John Skylitzes during the Siege of Dorostolon. Walking the battlefield after the fact, he found the corpses of many dead women with weapons in hand. Problem is, while he mentions the armor of the male dead Rus Vikings, he never mentions the armor of any woman, which he would have if he had seen it, just like he had for the dead men.
You see, it was a siege. Once male manpower gets low and desperation sets in, women will often fight, not because they can or because they are any good at it, but because they have no choice. During the siege, the Byzantines were starving them out so the Rus had to desperately sally out and maybe break free or starve to death inside the walls of a city that had become their prison.
      Simple logic.

Something that always comes to my mind when I see a younger person (man or woman) taking on a much older person in a fight.
Having grown up in rural farm communities my whole life there is something called old man strength. It was easily measured by whether the rusted bolt or the wrench he's using to turn it broke first. He, however, never did. A few of them were so tough they'd tighten and untighten bolts with their bare hands.
Why aren't these types of old timers shown in these movies and shows?
A lot of times, these old timers were as jolly and kind as Santa Claus at Christmas with little kids and baby animals, too.

The answer to your question is simple. In all the series that they make now, or in most of them, the aim is not to show the real history, but to present some theses assumed by the creators. Using the example of the Valhalla series, it can be shown that the creators distort history and create fictitious events that are supposed to fit the script and not be a representation of the real History.

they literally are, its the entire basis behind the "old master" trope. Old dude whose way beyond what he looks capable of. But at the same time, vikings is a setting where young men dont get old, they die "in glory". and the kind of man who can grow old in a place like that, is equally likely to be broken down by the end as made stronger. Because its also just as, if not MORE common even today, for older people to think theyre capable of doing more than they are because they "used to do it all the time", only to severely hurt or kill themselves because their body got old before they did.

These are written by people who have never done any physical labor nor ever been in a fight. I guy his size hitting her in the face is not something you can shake off that easily. Fights are short in real life for a reason. Each hit hurts. Blocking an axe with a shield takes strength and endurance. Her frame would have much less than him. Being able to pull the axe out of his hands or pull him off of his feet would be a joke in real life. But they need an action and girl boss scene so real life goes out the window. The reality is that few if any women went to battle. Except as archers they were more of a hindrance.

As is his arms were above his head, which means your lungs are leaning forward in your chest, it’s possible to impair through the chest cavity without impaling the kings. Now, that being said, the chances she missed both kings perfectly, is very slim. The act of impalement, at this point in history, had long been used as a form of painful execution. They knew how to place the spears to miss vital organs and extend the suffering. There is a tale about A Lombard Duchess, named Romilde of Friuli (Eastern Italy) in the early 7th century. 610-611 to be more exact. That tells of how Her husband the Duke Gisulf II of Friuli, led his forces in the defense of Friuli against the Avar khagan Cacan. Who ruled The Pannonian Avars. (Modern Hungary and Western Romania). Gisulf was slain in battle and the Avars advanced on the capital at Cividale. Duchess Romilde tried to negotiate with The Khagan, offering herself in marriage to him, which would make him the rightful leader of Friuli and give him connections into Bavaria and Frankia, as her brother was the Duke of Bavaria under Frank Domination. The Khagan agreed to her terms. But once they opened the gates, the Avars sacked the city and captured Romilde and her two Daughters. While her 4 sons escaped the city. Romilde was treated extreme rough, by the khagan and all his body guards. Before Impailing her on spears and leaving her to die slowly as a symbol to not try to force the khagan into any form of terms. Surrender or die badly was his point. This is only one instance of the act being committed in the late Roman to early Medieval Age.

The general content is true, but the nitty-gritty details leave much to be desired in terms of historical authenticity.
Why not learn to read the historical accounts in their actual form rather than whatever Wikipedia or some nonsensical pop-fiction site summarizes for you?
Gurrrl powah is fantasy. There were no Shield-maidens walking around kicking the teeth in on grown men. I'm sorry Hollywood lied to you, but indeed they did lie.

I love the ignorance of some people in the comments. Although i too am a firm believer that there’s no chance a trained woman would win the melee against a trained man, in this scene the shield is used correctly to minimize the impact force by deflecting the majority of the energy sideways. The actress does not attempt to stop the blow dead on its tracks. So yeah, although those blows would definitely not feel pleasant in the slightest and also leave bruises, they wouldn’t shatter her arm in a real fight.

Another scene removed from reality and the realities of life in the Middle Ages. For those "enlightened" politically correct people, this whole series actually insults the memory and respect of women living at that time. Living conditions in the Middle Ages in Scandinavia were so difficult that the women who lived then should be considered HEROES, not because of such invented scenes, but because they were able to abuse and keep their families alive.

  • @shawnn7502

Didn't realize this show was a fantasy.
Hundreds of years ago, women were too valuable to be wasted on fighting. They fought if they had to, but otherwise, that is a good way for your clan to go extinct.
If your opponent is lightly armored and mobile, the axe is a poor choice against sword and shield. A sword or spear was the better choice.
After he deftly takes her sword away, both appear to lose their minds. He makes a clumsy and heavy attack when he doesn't need to, and after she takes it away on the ground, she simply tosses it instead of splitting his head with it.

I wish the choreographers would not be so lazy and actually have respect for the huge disparity between the strength of man vs woman. There is no tug of war on a weapon..the man wins. There is no complete stopping of the forceful strikes of a man with a huge force multiplier like an axe with a forceful block by a woman...man wins again. I can go on and on and on but it would be quite nice to see some fight scenes with skill difference, finesse and just sheer thinking on the woman's part in beating out the man. If you can pull this off, it is way more awesome
