The depth leading up to this scene is just so amazing. His reasoning for "wanting to be baptized" so when he dies he can be with Asthelstan, and giving justification for his later request when he "dies" to have a Christian Mass. Then first thing he does when jumping out is kill the bishop, which I think he had 2 reasons for it. 1. To show he is not bluffing, and 2. to prove to his men the baptism didn't mean anything.

“I am constantly torn between killing myself and killing everyone around me.”
Ragnar is one of the absolute most interesting characters in cinematic history. He is so complex and has such a duality and the constant battle within himself is so beautifully portrayed.
3:55-4:30 The facial expressions of Ragnar give away so much. His constant struggle with his own fate. With who he is, as a man, a father, a king and a living legend. He has just conquered Paris in a brilliant way, and yet there is not a sign of victory on his face.
On the contrary. He looks like a man, who has lost all hope.
Ragnar: I have something to say. I did not become Earl because I aspired to be one. It came about because of other people's actions.
And I did not become king out of ambition, but once again I had no choice as a result of other people's actions. But nonetheless, I am king.
King Ragnar, that is my name.
What does a king do Bjorn?
    Bjorn: He rules.
And so Ragnar ruled. Because fate would have it.
