Puerto Escondido looks like a great place for a more laid-back type of vacation! Loved those beaches and the food looked amazing. I don't think we could do that open air apartment though. Great video :)
The open air apartment was a little more challenging than expected...we'd probably choose something more conventional next time round. 😂
Love your channel. I usually stay in Puerto Vallarta for two months every spring. 1800 gets a modern resort condo overlooking ocean on 20th floor with 5 negative edge pools and Costco and Walmart are 2 miles away. June rate probably 1500. Heading to Turkey next, thanks for all the great Turkey videos.

Thanks! Puerto Escondido turned out to be quite the adventure and now we're looking forward to having a completely different experience in San Miguel de Allende.

We actually just posted a video about our experience - we went to another location south of Puerto Escondido, and it didn’t turn out as great:( there were a lot of seagulls around, and the camp didn’t do much explanation at all

Looking at that food almost makes me want to tolerate the heat! Maybe we'll plan a trip in winter some day.
It's an unusual apartment, but for $50.50 with a pool and a scooter included, it definitely seems like it was worth it. And it puts a unique experience under your belt, for sure! Here's hoping you get some a/c soon. :)
In the end, we were pretty happy with the apartment. Sure it had a few downsides but we certainly got the adventure we were looking for!

We actually thought we could handle the heat after all our years in Singapore...but then we remembered that we spent our days in air conditioned apartments and workplaces! 😂

That's great! We have a few more destinations in Mexico, although I'm not sure whether they qualify as more economical. I guess we'll see once we tally it up at the end of the month!

It was definitely a memorable experience. We ultimately had a fun time in our open air apartment but I don't think we'll be renting another one anytime soon! 😂
The food tour looked great, I love doing that or a cooking class when I’m in a new city too (particularly if my partner needs to work, he prefers to just revisit my favorites afterwards than do the tour himself!)
That's a great way to do it for your partner...a fraction of the cost and all the benefit of handpicked restaurants!
As usual, the food looks very delicious and the open market makes it easy to prepare some of your own lunches etc. Another intereting video and always looking forward to your next one.

Jillian, for your first time surfing, you did amazing!!!! Although, I must confess, I would have been with Stephanie for that food tour and morning hot chocolate!
Looking back at the video, we had to laugh because the waves were so tiny! I did get out there a few more times and was surfing bigger waves by the end.
@@OurFreedomYears Paddle boarding on a serene lake is a challenge for me so I will stick with my Kudos. I did chuckle on the wave to the camera resulting in a fall. I just love the attitude you both have in challenging yourselves and how you handle unexpected circumstances.

Gosh. Last time I was in Puerto Escondido was in the year 2000. Just from the bits of your video, I can tell it's become pretty built out with a lot more services. My pretty wealthy friends in LA, now, are doing destination weddings there!
I think it has changed quite a bit over the last 20 years! It seems like new businesses were sprouting up all over.

Actually, we spent a lot of time thinking back to our years in Southeast Asia and how incredibly hot it was year round! Enjoy your time in Malaysia -- certainly you'll be diving into some great food.
Wow...that's a lot of money for Mexico! I'm used to living on $800.00 to $1,000.00 a month in Mexico. The airbnb was extremely expensive in my humble opinion, but you had a good time and could afford it, so all is good. :) Many thanks!

@@raindances3310 Thanks. I spend about 8 to 9 months out of the U.S. and come back to take care of a friend's house in summer. The most affordable places with history, beauty, nice people, etc. are (from what I've found) in Eastern Europe. I spend many months in Albania, and Macedonia. Turkey is also great. The lease expensive food on the planet! S.E. Asia is a great place for less expensive airbnb's/places to stay...but the weather (humidity/heat) is challenging. And there are places in Mexico that are more affordable once off the beach, such as Patzcuaro, Morelia, and Guanaguato. The 'real' Mexico, as I call it, once off the coast. Have a great week ahead.

Loving the content. Glad you all faired that hurricane well. Quick question. What do you all do for car insurance abroad? You seem to rent cars everywhere you go. Do you all have a global policy? My wife and I will be renting a car in South Africa and likely Croatia at some point but do not know the best way to do it and the internet is all over the place. Any insight you all have would be great and appreciated! Keep livin your all’s dream! It is great to watch!!
Great question! For short one to three day rentals, we always pay for full insurance to have that peace of mind. When we have a rental for a few weeks or a month, we are willing to accept a collision damage waiver less than $1,000. This means if something happens, we'd have to pay that amount as a deductible. It is a risk to take but full insurance can add up very quickly for longer rentals.
Of course, we do have additional coverage from our credit cards but it only applies if you decline all other insurance...and the local rental agencies often won't let you decline. Hope that helps!

Hi, I was wondering how you got to Puerto Escondido? Did you fly? It's been on my list as a vacation destination for a while, but there doesn't seem to be an easy way to get there when you have the typical 1 week American vacation. Now that we will be going more nomadic, maybe we can make it work(also with dogs)
We flew there from Toronto with a transfer in Mexico City. I think that's likely the easiest way to get there. The airport is a very short distance from town.
I have a couple questions. Do you ever have issues traveling with your pets, trying to find accommodations? What about the street dogs? We also have two little dogs and I'm nervous of bigger dogs around them.
We sometimes have a challenge finding Airbnbs that will accept our dogs, depending on the city (some cities are more pet friendly than others). We don't like to limit ourselves to the pet friendly filter so we do need to be prepared to hear some "no's" when we reach out directly to the hosts. However, we always manage to find someplace nice to stay -- it just takes a little work sometimes!
We have encountered many street dogs while traveling, particularly in Turkey and Albania. Usually the dogs in the city are very passive but we still remain on alert and are prepared to carry our dogs as needed. We find the bigger issue is with the street cats as they will come quite close, especially during meals, and they can be aggressive. Again, we keep a close eye and shoo the cats away as needed. Hope that helps!
Hola, planning to visit in a couple of weeks, but I’m concerned about the weather and it being raining everyday. Are the tropical storms affecting at all, and would you recommend going in a July?
We would suggest taking a look at the weather for Puerto Escondido in www.climatestotravel.com/ This is a very reliable source that we use for all our travel planning.
Thank you, were things bad with the hurricane? Did the area suffer any major damages at all? In your honest opinion would you recommend visiting right now?
The hurricane actually passed to the south of Puerto Escondido and didn't leave behind any damage at all. Life was back to normal the next day. I would suggest checking on the weather conditions in advance to see if the experience will be right for you. If you like beach town living, this is a good option, although it's not suitable if you really want to go swimming as the waves are generally too strong.

Didn't show much about what PTO's main reason for exhistance, the surf life... There's approx 350 local boys and a bunch or touri. surfers, depends on the south swells wrapping around the point and continuing on down to Zicatela. All the restaurants you tried feed those surfers
Gillian ended up surfing a few times and really loved it, even though the waves turned out to be pretty strong for a beginner.
@@OurFreedomYears sorry I missed the vid u did of her exp.surfing thought I was following pretty close. The clue I got was her Oasis t shirt..Roger the owner is one of the original local boys, when he first started they got broken boards from touri surfers, fixed them and tought themselves.
