- Pinhead was essentially one of the leaders of the Cenobites, former humans that now resided in an extradimensional realm and who travel to Earth through a puzzle box called the Lament Configuration with the aim of harvesting human souls.

Still my favorite line ever.
My favorite line is from the second movie is "there's demons in the Box" LOL
Judgement ad redemption to those who open the box.
My favorite line from the series is 'Your suffering will be legendary, even in Hell!' It's just so wonderfully over the top.

Pinheads incarnation in the First Hellraiser film is the most pure and ultimately the best rendition of the character because he displays a cool impartiality coupled with a cold intelligence that knows who he is and why he exists and is not some dumb downed maniacal carver of human flesh just for the sake of it.
I wish they would redo the first one , using the same screenplay, but with updated effects.
He isn't that smart tbh
Well said. I love that Pinhead too. So intelligent indeed.
I liked the second one too. Not as much as the first one.
"It is not hands that call us, it is desire!"
@@michaelmccoy1794 I disagree. I think the practical effects of the time really make it something special. Practical effects are an art form and feel so much more real than 3D visual effects.

I absolutely love when people admit that one of the most terrifying things they can imagine in the world is being challenged by someone much much more intelligent than them. Very hard but very very real.
Why is that scary. It seems easily accepted that a genius would outsmart you. I would find it terrifying if a complete moron made a fool of me.

@Sigma Nayo oh no, you said the "r" word. 😆
What are you on about. Only an egomaniac would think like this.
Tom Oliver 😂😂😂
I was always drawn to pinhead as a character because of his calm demeanor and his noticable intelligence. However I also really like that he was not indiscriminately evil.
Yes! He only comes to those who want him. He is part of my tattoo sleeve on my left arm, and to me, he's the perfect example of "be careful what you wish for."
Me too in the 3rd one it's not . A hole Pinhead or The Hell Priest. Because Elliot Spencer is not a part of him anymore. So I can let the massacring every one thing slide . Because Pinhead is just the hell torture stuff half . But when Eliot Spencer joins with him an they become one again. He is truly Pinhead or The Hell Priest again.
@@fredzzkid idk hard to argue he's not evil when he's literally a hell priest.
@@jayhollows5729 Everything is subjective. What is Hell? In my mind it is a dimension of utter chaos (as in "Event Horizon"). Or in a Lovecraftian sense, the realm of The Old Ones. Humans call it "Hell" because they haven't any other name for it and it's beyond human description.
This is why he says he and the Cenobites are "Demons to some, angels to others" - because depending on what you're looking for perhaps what others would consider "Hell" might be your Heaven.
Evil is a concept of human civilization/society. There is no evil in Nature. He represents the most primal part of humans - the part that comes to the fore when rage, lust, hate and so forth are nurtured. So I maintain he isn't evil. He only IS. And he only comes to those who seek him. True, they may get more than they bargained for - but - oh well, play stupid games, win stupid prizes, eh? Because what they really find out is what their true nature is - without any filter - whether or not they want to see it.
For some people having to face what they really are is the worst Hell imaginable. So again I would say - he's a great reminder to be careful what you wish for!
Pinhead was not the name Clive wanted for him, but it’s what the cast and crew called him. Clive called him “Priest”, or “Hellpriest”, something like. It was one of those things that caught hold, and even though Clive didn’t want it to be used, it’s ultimately what he’s known as.
literally in the books it was Hellpriest, and it was a female character.
@@nachtkind46 Female? Interesting. If it were up to me, Hellpriest would be both male and female. Hard to experience everything unless you embody that duality, I’d wager.

Doug's voice, being way deeper then pinheads frame suggests, added to the otherworldly character. Plus its great that he's been on a load of cradle of filth albums. :)
He made pinhead really awesome with that voice. Its a shame he went back to b rated movies
@@jasonleslie203 Ah everyone's gotta eat man, or work, and theirs plenty of people who think hellrasier was always s shitty b movie, so you can understand it. Besides I can almost promise he wasn't doing voice work on cradle of filth albums for the big pay check, he did it for the fun of it mainly.
Hell yes 👌
Skinny Puppy, Front Line Assembly and later on, White Zombie and Velvet Acid Christ all used Hellraiser samples.
Joseph Browne Yes. Pinhead, with his slender frame and deep voice makes him the Rick Astley of horror films.
tbh, I find the concept of them being neutral grounded creatures not bound to heaven or hell a lot more horrifying and slightly comforting. Knowing that if you are a soul who is under constant suffering you will be okay because you are not a bad tainted soul- but if you have wronged others to the point of tainting your soul than you will die in suffering. I fucking love that concept.

The eccentric thing about Pinhead is that he is technically innocent. At least towards the beginning before the series dragged on so long. I really think he was just trying to be helpful. Unfortunately the god of masochism doesn't really understand non-masochists. It's like a feast god not being able to comprehend someone who was on a diet. Dealing with pinhead is basically just going to the wrong heaven. Take valhalla for instance. People were meant to engage in brutal bloody combat all day long every day. Getting axed in the face. Getting strangled with their own intestines. Bear in mind that Valhalla also follows videogame logic. After being killed you just respond to fight again. To some people that would be hell. That would be worse than a regular war were at least you can escape through death. Personally to me however that does sound like a god damn paradise. But my point still stands. One man's heaven is another man's hell.
Hmm... That's really interesting, thanks for sharing!!
I know my heaven would be an infinite orgy with all members of all species in the universe. 🤭
Exactly. In the first couple of films the Cenobites were neither good nor evil. Just there to take whoever solved the box believing they were given them what they wanted. But they have a different concept of the line between pain and pleasure than humans do.
me in valhalla: SCOTLAND FOREVAA
RemixedVoice same but I’m gay so just with other dudes
it is said in Valhalla you don't get to fight and die over and over again, in fact they get to fight every day ( your fellow warriors / Einherjars ) and the next day their wounds are restored and a big meal is served, for vikings this was the ultimate honor. The only time these warriors truly die is in the final blood on Wigrid along with the Aesir.
make sure not to misinform other people about the norse mythology :)

Right? Underrated creepy scene.
fun fact: that line wasn't originally written, it was freestyled by the actor on-the-fly!

"Demons to some angels to others" is one of the best lines in horror films in my opinion. I think cause it leaves a lot to the imagination.
Clive Barker is one of my favorite authors and i absolutely loved the first 2 Hellraiser movies, but i quit the movie series when they turned Pinhead and the cenobites into basic slashers that kill indiscriminately. The Cenobites don't kill quickly, they slowly and agonizingly torture you to death and then continue your torture in their hell.
The whole underlying theme in both movies that its the HUMANS that are the monsters who murder anyone, while the Cenobites only come when summoned by desire, will and a very difficult puzzle box. Its explained in both the movie and the book that you don't just accidentally find Lemarchand's Box/the Lament Configuration, you have to actively seek it out.
Fun fact: they originally wanted to put pin head in Freddy vs jason but I think it was dropped because they couldn't think of a way to put him in
No they couldn't get the copyrights to pinhead from what I heard. He was going to meet them in hell

Great video, my absolute favorite horror series. Thank you for this!
In the novel, Pinhead is actually female and is a minor character, with maybe two lines. I was really surprised.
In the novella The Hellbound Heart, his gender is never specified explicitly. I came to think of Pinhead in the books as androgynous. Neither male nor female.
Denis Lanza And in the original novel, Butterball was the leader of the Cenobites and the main antagonist. Unlike his movie counterpart, Butterball was capable of speech and he was also the last Cenobite to be defeated.
@@MoskHotel >~> that just sounds..wrong. then again I grew up seeing the movies first

The problem is he claims to be neutral but the only side of experience he's willing to explore is pain.

I've never seen these movies, never even knew they'd made so many. However, of the many evil outsiders in the Pathfinder RPG, the Kytons were always extremely fascinating to me. As beings exploring the true depths of sadomasochism and often being mislabeled as chain devils, I found them more intriguing than Demons, Devils, Daemons, etc.

So In the film universe, god allowed all of the murders of his creation by Mr. Pinhead here, did not intervene in the crimes against nature, but when Mr. Pinhead got careless or thought himself untouchable by god and killed one of his angels, THATS when he steps in and punishes him?
God in the real life lore is never said to have total control, and is canonically offended most by challenges to his power.
It's why he cast down Lucifer, and it's also the first commandment.

Really enjoyed this. I only fully enjoyed the first 4 films, and struggled to finish watching some of the later films as they just didn't compel me as much.
I'm glad that Barker stuck to his guns regarding Pinhead's character and completely agree that the power he commands from his seemingly limitless intelligence (though not) is one of the biggest draws to the films. Can't imagine him any other way. I enjoyed the comparison to Hannibal Lector.
