Taiwan is an island nation surrounded by sea.
The northeastern district of Gongliao, which lies on the edge of the Kuroshio Current, is particularly rich in marine resources, and its residents also have a close relationship with the sea. However, this once lively fishing port and fishing village has gradually faded over time; not only is it sparsely populated, even the boat captains are nearly all gone.
Situated in the mountains of Gongliao district further away from the coastline are the Caoling Historic Trail and water terraced paddy fields, which are engraved with the struggle of Taiwan’s ancestors but became neglected as times evolved. Yet, thanks to some people’s devotion to the wisdom and hard work of our ancestors, the historic trail and paddies have been infused with innovative new ideas and are now once again spectacular and full of vitality.
In addition to the power of nature, the topography of the mountains and seas have also been changed because of human beings. But are these changes good or bad, and on what basis is good or bad defined? The mountains and seas whisper to us: Treating the mountains and seas with courtesy and respect is perhaps the best response!
