As a former construction inspector I have seen my share of both good and bad equipment operators. My favorites were the trackhoe operators. Their precision and finesse always impressed me. I often would have to supervise the excavation just beyond the reach of the bucket. I depended on the skill of the operator for my safety and successful completion of the project. Watching you I know that I could have confidence in your skills to get the job done.

An inspector who respects the operators! That's not too common! In my experience, inspectors see something going wrong and choose to focus on the bad being bad rather than helping turn the bad in to good.

I'm a relatively new viewer of your channel. I'm greatly impressed by your ability to take machines that have come to the end of their commercial life, and repair them for personal use. It keeps the machines out of landfills and junkyards, while also setting a great example for others to follow. Additional admiration and kudos for treating your land and property with respect, and not allowing it to become an eyesore like so many other people tend to do. When I had a concrete contractor put in my new workshop foundation slab, he said he found a place to put the topsoil. I told him to pile it in the back yard behind the workshop.
Around here people put a sign in the front yard, "Wanted Clean Fill Dirt". People, like my contractor and others will bring in fill, or topsoil depending on what you want. If they bring in fill dirt it is usually faster to get. Push the topsoil back. Spread out the fill, and cover it with the pile of topsoil you pushed back.

For those from other places, in the Northeast US the trees being removed are relatively young, they grow quite fast in the wet climate, so these are not part of an ancient forest. The land was probably cleared for farming until roughly 50 years ago (perhaps less). I’m definitely in favor of keeping as many trees as possible but this clearing is a very tiny part of the forest. The reforestation in this region has brought back a lot of wildlife-it’s not rare for bears to venture into the suburbs and wild turkeys are everywhere (and sometimes can be quite aggressive!).

I have watched Matt's channel for several years now. He always seems to have a really good plan what to do with his property. I second the thought that he saves a lot of equipment from the scrap yards. To me, spending 10K to repair an aging machine is a lot better that 250K for a new one. Plus the newer equipment sucks with all of the electronics. Keep up the good work. I learn a lot about how stuff works and how to keep aging machines working.

The phrase I think Matt was looking for is **the angle of repose** For a pile of material, Rocks and soil: The maximum angle to the horizontal at which they will remain in place without sliding. The angle of repose can range from 0° to 90°. All materials have an angle of repose, some materials slide easily, some don't. The angle of repose is why Matt can't make a pile of dirt with 90 degree sides.

On all my building projects in the past, I looked at topsoil, for the most part, as a positive asset because its biggest value is to be saved as a cover to rebuild the surface. Now I learned that others in the construction process see it, first of all, as a big negative (rotten soil) if not stripped because it is such a poor subsoil. ...and no, I never laid cement on grass :)

It was mounted on the turntable of an excavator/digger and so could be rotated thru 360 degrees. It could therefore be loaded and could dump in and from any direction. Just drive up rotate to the loading position, load, drive away. Get to dump area , rotate to where you wanted the load dumped and tip it out. Driven from the truck cab position. A dream vehicle ?, maybe.

You look like you have so much fun pushing dirt around. As a young boy, I spent hours and hours outside playing in the dirt with my metal Tonka toys. I would have loved to have had a career as an operator. At 71, my time has passed . So enjoy yourself while you can. And push some Pennsylvania dirt for me....😊

Another reason why you can't build on topsoil is as the organic material (plants etc.) decomposes, it allows the topsoil layer to settle unevenly which means suddenly, that building foundation you built on it is unsupported in places and want's to fall down, which leads to cracked, uneven walls, floors and roves until it gets so bad, the building just collapses...
That (as I understand it) is the main reason why you must remove the Topsoil before building something...

Watching you "manipulate" that engine next to the wall reminds me of a facility I worked at during the early 2000's. We had a very nice building that was finished in the warehouse. But the lower 4 feet or so of the wall became quite damaged by forktrucks . I decided to place 3/4" plywood stacked sideways all along the lower 4 feet of the warehouse. Now the fork trucks can gently touch the wall without damage.

Hey Matt, I really dig your content! :D
You once spoke about the outdoor part of your new bulding, the one with the sawmill in it, would perhaps be enclosed someday if you decide you need it for extra space. In that case, have you considered leaving the current endwall and door in place, to seperate that "new" space from the current one? That way you could perhaps use that space for painting and powerwashing. Just a thought :)

As in life there are a minimum of two actions positive-negative. He is no different than most of us, procrastination. Like I saw in his wood cutting adventure, he is constantly moving stuff in front of stuff, he’s got 40 acres to put his stuff yet he’s moving stuff on top of each other to move later. Efficiently should always be our goal. Time is a valuable thing not to waste.

Another fun one Matty thanks mate! It's like your machinery becomes 'self-aware'! - as they love to say about their silicon & copper robots.
Imagine the Komatsu has an actual pair of eyes in the front of its bucket & is looking at the pile of dirt & thinking about how far it can stretch its neck etc to get the biggest bite of dirt it needs? No jerkiness of movement. Deliberate, subtle control. I see the little 'jiggle' you do with the bucket to settle its load before you tip it into the truck! I see the way you control the 'wrist' rotation as you're tipping into the truck, so that the load of the bucket is distributed evenly from front to back! Like poetry & fun to watch!
Happy machines too! They all sound good & powerful. Hardly any smoke. And you fixed ALL of em!
Whether it's that I'm still really an 8 year old or whatever I don't care it's always real fun watching machinery doin its thing under your control!
Keep doin what you're doin mate! 👍😃👍

Matt - Excellent video as always. Couple of questions - Noticed when you went to dump dirt, that the excavator arms slide down slowly - is that caused by a hydraulic leak? Is that area you cleaning for your future home? It looks like a very nice area. Anyways, good luck and keep those interesting videos coming. Looking forward to the one(s) on your wood boiler installation.

I have filled a canyon of about 80 x 250 x 30 feet deep an did most of it with a 34 hp Kubota tractor w/loader bucket. The only help I got was 3 days of 1yd bucket loader and 3 10yders back to back. Keep uo the good work.
