Firing 2 inch Amazon Black Powder Cannon

- We bought a $26 Amazon 5mm black powder cannon by EASYANT. It came with a fuze hole too small to shoot the recommended 2mm fuzes, so we had to drill it out. After firing, it was a very weak cannon, but it did make some cool flash. It will make a great paperweight and is fun to fire at night for the flash.
Update by Popular Demand! Bought new cannon with pistol powder and new firework fuzes. Check it our below:

Instead of drilling the fuse hole larger and ruining it you should have used narrower visco fuse.
Or a rock motor starter - just coat the exposed wire with varnish, or liquid tape. I prefer varnish.
🙂😎👍
@@BIG-DIPPER-56 I did another video where I used the rocket motor fuse on a new cannon to see how much more power it would have. czcams.com/video/L1CDSSPaQ_0/video.html
You are right that using a smaller fuse was the right solution. Since I could not find visco, I used rocket fuse and pistol powder. Made a video that shows this same cannon but all silver color with rocket fuse and pistol powder

"Electrical" rocket motor starter. Coat the wires with varnish, or liquid tape - fire with a battery.
The wire starters like from Estes to touch off the solid fuel motors.
I have two of these tiny cannon, and I can perforate several layers of thick cardboard or drinks cans with great ease. Your mistakes are (a) using FFG powder, which is designed for much larger bore barrels (say .50 cal or greater): had you used FFFFG (as recommended, you'd have had much more "oomph"); (b), by boring out the touch-hole, you are allowing too much combustion gas to escape that way; and (c) putting too much powder and wadding into the barrel, so the BB is effectively sitting in the muzzle, with no barrel distance in which to accelerate.
Nicely explained 🙂😎👍
For real!
I remade the video comparing the power of this cannon with a new bought (silver) cannon using a smaller fuze and Triple 7 FFFG. The cannon was stronger but still not that strong.
czcams.com/video/L1CDSSPaQ_0/video.html
are they fun
For a caliber that small you are typically supposed to use to use tripple F (FFF), as it is a finer granulation and would probably help with your velocity.
I'd go 4F myself
I'd try 4F
Yup - 4f 🙂😎👍
Made a new video comparing it with a new cannon, 777 FFFG powder, and smaller fuze:
czcams.com/video/L1CDSSPaQ_0/video.html
That looks dangerous as hell!!! I want one!
So that's how they put holes in the Cheerios. Cool.
This video is actually really satisfying to watch! Pretty cool little piece
I use bottle rocket fuse, Much smaller hole in a homemade cannon. 50 cal 12" blasts through concrete blocks.
Where do you get bottle rocket fuze?
@@oddrocket2743 From bottle rockets. Simply pull the fuse out. I use the little ones about the size of a firecracker. The stiff green fuse, Not the loose grey fuse.
@@oddrocket2743 From bottle rockets, Just pull the fuse out. But honestly, Your cannon is so short, I would start over. My brother made a cannon that shoots .177 cal pellets. It uses the powder from one of the little bottle rockets. The stick of the rocket makes a good plunger and the paper surrounding the rocket makes the wadding. @ 4" of travel it can penetrate a 2x4. So I had to show up my brother and drilled a 11/2" chunk of stainless bar down to 12" @ 1/2 diameter so I could shoot muzzleloader round ball. Fully loaded the ball has about 10"of travel within the barrel. This is a very powerful cannon and surely lethal. It is MUCH louder than a 12 ga shotgun. Thanks for the video.
The ball should be hard to drive into the bore!
A snug, air-tight fit is needed to get the powder to burn properly.
No, adding a paper towel wrapping to make it as snug as you want it, if you used a tight fitting ball or slug you'd be screwed any time you had a misfire.
@@stclairstclair I'm sure you could figure out a way or two to address that. My first instinct would be a small torch - and yes, with safety paramount.
It looks like a little Civil War Mortar!
If you are using Pyrodex you should probably try the "P" version for pistols. it burns much quicker for the shorter barrels. you had the Rifle/Shotgun version.
I'd love to see this on either my desk or a jerk boss in a snobby office, always point at the person in the chair opposite the desk.
Need more powder LOL, I mean that is what I would do. More Powder!!!
It must be great living in a free country. This would be impossible in Britain. To put it into perspective- we can’t even buy the fuse.
That's too bad. Can you buy fireworks in the UK and use the fuse from fireworks?
Yes you can, the Hodgson powder is legal as is the Visco fuse.
I love it!
Or do like they did with full size cannons and pour a bit of powder down the touch hole, and a bit over the hole, and light it off with a match for instant firing. Mistake to drill the touch hole bigger. Mistake to not use a patch wad also for tighter ball fit.
Take a 0.4 gram lash powder and it bangs like a 22lr,,,use litle sandbags to vix the artillery ond the ground or table 🙂👍🏼
I use a 22lr casing with a soldered on handle for a measure. It works out to 5 grains 4ffff blackpowder.
prime with 4ffff aswell as I can fine the fuse. A little pinch of TP for wad to hold the powder and ball...
A good little pop, and a puff of smoke...
Really fun ....
The fuse hole is so big, all compresion scapes
Use pistol grade black powder. It had much faster burning rate. But don't use nitro powder.
pyrodex is not black powder . It is a substitute for real black powder gun powder .
You are correct, but where I live blackpowder is not available but Pyrodex is at most sporting goods stores.
@@oddrocket2743 You are absolutely correct about trying to find black powder . I know its hard to come by because the closest place for me to find black powder is 60 miles away . I tried 3 grains or about .194 g of 4f black powder in this cannon , and the bb would not pass through 1 layer of cardboard . I then used 3 grains of my best flash powder and the bb almost went though a 2x4 . Some people say this cannon will become a grenade if you use flash powder in it . They have not taken a look at this cannon is very robust ---- thick stainless steel . It would take high explosives like nitroglycerine to blow it apart from the inside . I saw this silly video where someone was trying to break the stainless steel shackle of a master lock with flash powder charges . Even with high explosives this would be difficult . It would take a shape charge of high explosive as they use to cut steel I beams when they demolish buildings .
@@oddrocket2743 you can make black powder or flash powder at home if you're interested in the kind of stuff, it's super easy, lots of videos and information on it.
Correct pyrodex is a substitute but it shoots the same as black powder you can't tell any difference other than the cleanliness I make my own black powder and when I fire it and pyrodex I can tell no noticeable difference at all firing it from 12 gauge shells or muzzle loader other than the homemade Black powder does not have nearly as much fouling
@@texascelt8363 biggest difference is real BP is easier to ignite, so rock locks usually have issues with substitutes. Foweling depends on how you make it or what brand you buy. Neither would be an issue here really.
I imagine if you patch the ball, as is done in a muzzleloader, it will really have velocity.
Would it make a dif if you used actual black powder rather than the "equiv" stuff?
Just as the founding fathers intended
Believe it or not you would get 5 years minimum in jail just for possessing one of these in the UK and more for having powder and shot as having ammo is another offence although it is legal to buy Pyrodex without a licence..
If you had real black powder that requires a separate licence and is a further offence.
Even possessing a water pistol in public can be construed as an offence in the UK and now so many different knives are illegal even to have on your own house you'll soon have to have plastic cutlery as they do in prisons but there are so many criminals loose on the streets you might as well be in prison anyway - and you could probably get a gun in there along with drugs more easily than on the streets.
use flash powder from fireworsk, just not too much or you will get a ring in ur ear
That’s 4 minutes and 59 seconds I’ll never get back…
the ball dripped out of the cannon, never hitting target -looks like powder made the hole
Exact on the visco. Also, You are not ramming the charge hard enough or putting the BB in a patch to make a good seal and to allow pressure to build.
Nope the problem is hes using pyrodex. All those substitute powders are meant to be used with primers only since its a propellent it does not work with flint locks or cannons he needs real black powder
I think you need to pack it tighter, it seems to just fizzle instead of popping.
If you use Pyrodex you need to pack it in tighter, not just pour it down the barrel, and by sure to pack the patch and ball against the propellant. This may get in to work better.
I did pack it tight, but the fuze hole is a little too big to build up pressure
What is the diameter of the touch hole and what is the thickness of the fuse? Someone had drilled the touch bigger so the fuse would fit better. I don't remember if it was you. I need to think on this, I have a idea but not sure what the part is called.
@@oddrocket2743 I went back and looked at the video again. You are using RS pyrodex, that is equal to FFG black power. I think you need to use P pyrodex that is equal to FFFG black powder. FFFG black powder is for smaller caliber weapons like pistols. The FFG power is for rifle or larder caliber guns. Can you get black powder where you live? if so you may want to try it.
For the touch hole do you have or can you get thinner fuse? Do you know how to solder? Get what is called a bank pen, looks like a big straight pin or maybe a thin brad or nail, stick it in the touch hole and solder it in. Afte the solder cools pull the pin out. Not try the thinner fuse for fit, cut the fuse at a angle to make it easier to insert. if it still does not fit, use a pen drill or a hobby drill to ream the hole a little larger.
I don't know if the solder will hold up to the pressure of the charge.
@@oddrocket2743 Black powder substitute does not work with fuse lit things like cannons or flintlock pistols. It is meant to be used with a primer this substitute behaves much like modern smokeless powder where pressure peak is only achieved if its lit by a strong primer you need to use real black powder and i tell you because i have endless cannons and i work with fireworks
@@oddrocket2743pyrodex or any substitute powder is a propellent its meant to be lit by a primer
Pyrodex is not black powder. It is a week replacement. True FFFG is what you need.
When I as a kid, brass carbide cannons could be ordered from the coves of comic books. Not sure what they did. Make noise?
Cool - Thanks a Lot ! ! !
🙂😎👍
I think you probably need to use a pistol grade black powder. That stuff seems to burn like it’s meant for a longer rifle barrel. Just a thought may help push that ball out a little quicker.

@@oddrocket2743 you are using black substitute brother. I have those exact cannons from amazon and all three are capable of shooting through car doors i am not joking. Use actual black powder it will make your ears ring. If you cant buy real black powder make some i make 4 pounds with 40$
@@oddrocket2743 i use 1cm square t shirt bits as patch for the ball. put the powder in and put the t shirt piece covering the hole and put the projectile in the middle and ram it down
Mine must be different. Mine seems to have a lot more oomph. I use small gauge fuse and I don’t fill it up so full with black powder. Oh, and I use 4F black powder. Unless I’m missing something obvious……I can easily break glass from a couple yards away.
What he’s missing is real black powder thats all i have tons of cannons they all require black powder. Pyrodex is a propellent a substitute and it will only peak power with a primer just like modern smokeless powder it behaves the same

@@oddrocket2743 - the choice of fuse is no big deal. I measured mine and it is about 1/16”. It fits snugly in the existing hole. But another writer suggested, and I agree, that the likely biggest issue may be (?) your choice of powder?? I use GOEX 4Fg Muzzle Load Black Powder in all of my cannons. I’m not at all trying to “sell” black powder, but I blew off a few rounds today just to make sure I’m not seeing things. It really does pack a punch when I lite it off. I usually place a block of lead against the rear of the cannon to prevent it from flying backwards when it goes off. Actually, I tried 2Fg today as well, and that too resulted with a good report when it fired…but maybe somewhat less than 4Fg??? Good luck!
Can you use it against toy soldiers?
Powder packed good tiny cloth not tissue paper and the ball and the pack it good and tight at least the way Bobby D said
Ha! Ha! Ha! I do not think I will add that too my castle defenses. Although at first it did come too mind until I saw the dismall degree of damage that it causes to the cardboard box.
looking at the 1st firing, the hole was too big at top for the fuse. losing bunch of energy
Yes. The fuse hole was too tight and I cut it too large later. I need to try it again with a different cannon probably
No, Fix it, I'm the crafty retired mechanic, you can reduce the hole size, find hobby store metal tubing even a crime antenna piece, drill you cannon hole to accept a proper size sleeve, JB Weld it in, think out of the box.
Crome
@@oddrocket2743 drill, and tap a sleeve then re drill? b7 stud maybe
Fun times!❤
As a dumb teen i thought i was making a cannon but when my dad saw it he was pissed because it was basically a zip gun lol very illegal in california dyring the 80s. I cut a thick steel tube about half an in inside diameter. Full inch on outside. I created a wooden stand for it with wheels. I even made a breech for it. I was taking .177 6mm bbs and making little toilet paper bags of ammo about an inch long. The tube was about 6 inches long. The breech I had my bro weld it to the tube and I was useing .22 blanks instead of powder. in the middle of the breech a took a spring with a nail glued in the middle as the firing pin. I think i got off like 3 shots in the canyon behind my hoyse before my dad found me ohh he was so pissed. He made me destroy it rightmin front of him and told me never again. Well after that i decided to start creating booby traps instead lmao. I never used em but once when my family had people breaking into our tow yard in the back corner and stealing from people's cars. I set up a spring loaded Bobby trap that launched 16 penny nails and dropped a heavy steel bar where they were coming in over the fence.
Maybe some cotton wadding between the powder and the ball would help.
The size of the fuse hole isn't helping with the power. I think that's deliberate.
To much pressure escaping the fuse hole. Darn! It must not be designed to fIre very hard as the stand is very insignificant. You need to measure the ball and measure the bore if there is a significant difference you need a sleeve on the ball. Could even be paper.
Luckily, Amazon has a 30 Days return policy. 👈
As others have pointed out you have the wrong combination of powder etc. Enlarging the fuse hole was a big mistake, you should have just got some smaller fuse .
I've made a lot of miniature BP cannons some as small as a pencil and firing a single #4 buckshot and even that will go through a cardboard box or an aluminium can with no problem.
Black powder substitute does not work with fuse lit things like cannons or flintlock pistols. It is meant to be used with a primer this substitute behaves much like modern smokeless powder where pressure peak is only achieved if its lit by a strong primer he needs to use real black powder
How did you get the coil of fuse
Hello, even if you don't find it dangerous, don't do this in front of the children. Unforeseen risk of injury. A bad example. If daddy does...A flutter of butterfly wings can lead to bad surprises. Aurevoir.
try a finer ground powder.
What are you expecting from a thimble sized cannon? A mile wide impact crater?
I at least want it to penetrate cardboard or a plastic bottle
Drilling the fuse hole wasn't a good idea. Fuse is supposed to fit very tightly in the hole. Also finer powder is needed and pack it very tightly in the bore.
Yeah, that powder is MUCH too slow for that cannon. Use flash powder (FFFF) instead.
That's a cute l'il thing!
Caliber 5mm and fuse hole 2,7mm is not good. Thread hole on use electric ignition with threaded plug
Cost
You are using Pyrodex. That is not black powder. That is black powder replacement. It burns very slow compared to real black powder. I won't use it in my black powder guns.
Also that is just plain old green cannon fuse. It always burns @ 30sec a foot. I mention that so you can do more with it.
Will it be deadly if shot at a human’s Head!
I will keep the 1 I made it’s way bigger
vs Amazon junk 😂😂
I would just buy an AR-15 or a nice CZ 75 variant if you want to make noise and put holes in boxes.
Omg the weir time on that fuse was infuriating.
Damn, that thing wouldn't even have an effect on an army of invading termites. 🤨
сколько. стоит. такая. пушка. и. где. ее. продают. ?
I was on a 155🇺🇸🇺🇸
Why would you bore out the fuse hole!? You ruined this little cannon by doing so, you should have just got a fuse with a smaller diameter. all you had to do was go to the fireworks store and buy a thing of bottle rockets, the fuses on those would work perfectly. You should get a welder and weld that fuse hole shut, and then drill it out to the diameter of a bottle rocket fuse, problem solved! :)
3f and packed tight
It's meant to be a toy, right, so that is probably good that it's not super dangerous.
Yes it is dangerous i have one and i can penetrate car doors with it. He using the wrong powder pyrodex peaks pressure with a primer its not meant for cannons
Thanks for the effort, but amatuer hour.
You'll get a much sharper report from FFF or FFFF.
Use flash powder
That’s sooo dangerous, children will shoot them self in the eye.
It’s all fun and games until a eye it put out…
Barrel to short it’s just a mortar not a cannon
Are you really at a gun range. Please tell me you were there to shoot guns.
I would have test fired that toy at my kitchen table
that rs powder is way too slow burn use pistol powder

First You Should have USED A SMALLER DIAMETER FUSE INSTEAD OF DRILLING THE HOLE BIGGER SECOND You SHOULD HAVE USED A TINY PIECE OF CLOTH To PATCH THE BALL AND THIRD You NEEDED A WAD OF SOME KIND BETWEEN THE POWDER And BALL AND FORTH You are SUPPOSED TO PACK IT ALL TIGHTLY
