- Information:
This recording was found in a Kirsten Flagstad memorial album that I bought from a London HMV. It is listed as 1940 Oslo, but I am unaware of any engagements Flagstad had in Oslo at this time so can only guess this is a rare concert performance. Please correct me if I am mistaken.
EDIT: I have found the source of this performance to be from the Bodanzky 1935 Tristan at the Met. Not sure why it was incorrectly labelled in the memorial album.
The definitive interpretation of Liebestod.
The definitive Isolde.
@@juliovicsilvaaray The definitive Wagnerian soprano.
@@BaroneVitellioScarpia1 Probably the definitive Wagnerian singer.
Please check out soprano Kasondra Kazanjian, "Tu che di gel sei cinta", marvelous voice
@@vincec8218 She is horrible.
Superb! She was still vocally memorable even 17 years later.

South Korean soprano Ungiu Kim, fantastic old school sound, hints of Caballé, Alessandra Marc, and Cheryl Studer in her voice, awesome rendition of "Tu che le vanità" with piano accompaniment

I love Bodanzky's tempo in this Liebestod. If one reads the score, one sees that Wagner didn't put one single accelerando or ritardando in the Liebestod. Conductors constantly try to stir up through lots of unmusical tempo alterations. Having a steady tempo and working on the dynamics will get a much better result, perhaps what Wagner wanted in this last scene. Of course, it'll also be a great help if you have the best Wagnerian soprano the world has ever seen and heard, but unfortunately, we're lacking in that department today.

This does indeed sound like the younger Flagstad from her first Met Isoldes back in 1935. Excellent quality of sound, kudos to the finder! My goodness what an instrument, such an enormous but elegantly controlled torrent of sound, never rushed, with impeccable timing and phrasing, and her miraculously unique vocal color. Do refer also to her splendid Liebestod from 1952 in a Berlin concert at the age of 57, I believe under Georges Sebastian. Kirsten's rendition of the Liebestod remains incomparable to this day; Birgit Nilsson, an otherwise magnificent Isolde, I find always wanting in this particular piece, sounding rather cold and rushed. Flagstad here is sublime ecstasy!
Colossal recording. Glorious piece of music delivered by the most divine instrument.

Glorious. There has never been anyone to remotely compare with her since. Only Ponselle of her contemporaries approached splendour and beauty of tone

Nilsson and also Sutherland could compare I would think.
@@hanslick3375 Nilsson is a voice of platinum and steel dusted with diamond crystals and was never as warm as Flagstad's in this music. Sutherland might have had the potential but took her voice in a different direction. She sacrificed diction/phrasing for the incredible flexibility she brought to her chosen repertoire.
@@user-gt7xs1fc6g Sutherland sang some Wagner at the beginning of her career. Her voice was so versatile that it wasn't obvious at first what repertoire suited her best. Those recordings are available. Her voice just wasn't as heavy in that range as the true dramatic sopranos'.
This is remarkable. I’ve never heard her so emotionally uninhibited. I hope you find out the source of the tape.
Effortless giant voice.
The dynamics are almost over the top, but the effect is absolutely amazing. That extreme climax and then the calmness afterwards. Did Wagner compose an orgasm? I wonder. God, what I wouldn't give to have been there.
Kirsten Flagstad wasn't in Norway or Oslo in 1940. She was prevented from going home when Norway was occupied that spring.
Thanks for the information. Do you have any idea where this might be from?

Oh Lord… 😍😍😍
How can someone be so stentorian and tender at the same time?
That is not stentorian. That's called the cut of the voice. The ability to cut through the orchestra.

I believe the photo was from her first Isolde at the Met after WW2.
It was printed in Opera News right at the time of her return to the Met in 1951.
It is either a bad recording or a much earlier recording but facsinating nonetheless
