PSA: To be clear, for some who may not have gotten it, this video is focusing on the point where Shane shoots Otis. It’s not about how poorly the rest of their raid to the school went. It’s a follow up to another video I made.
Yes. The entire loot-run was poorly handled. Yes, they could’ve survived if they approached the operation differently. That’s not the point here.
With that said - leave topic suggestions in the comments. 🤙🏻

There's a cut scene where Shane is running away from a crowd of walkers, even in good physical shape, he barely managed to escape
And in this situation, he limps, and carries a heavy bag and a shotgun. If they had kept this scene on the show, the audience would have known that Shane had already experienced in such a situation, and they would have understood that both of them would not be able to choose alive.

@@VanyaTheSlavicLol. The issue on fast walker and smart walkers. They as in AMC keep changing the script around when come to walkers in general also they weren't do so well when come to the financial part. So "budget cut" came around and the walker got "budget cut". Get it? Lol. Now the Ytubers or community who don't pay attention about AMC's money issue will come up with their own theory and their own mind of thought on the walker variants. AMC keep on dragging the show, keep changing the script as usual, keep trying to milk the dried up cow and they were likely like this one day in a meeting...
Guy in charge: Hey! We need to drag out the show and keep milking it! I want ideas! I want it now! Anything will do!
Some random person in the meeting: Hey! I've seen youtubers on youtube making their own theory about walker variants. We can "borrow" that idea! If we do that we can keep milking the show!
Guy in charge: Good! We will put that into the show later! Yay! We can milk the show for more cash!

The big mistake was both of them going into the trailer. Otis should have gone in while Shane used the truck's horn and lights to lead them away. Otis knew the stuff and he could carry it all himself. Then go around and pick Otis up. Neither of them were all that bright. Neither of them deserved to survive. And neither did.

forgive me if I misremember the scene, its been a long time since I saw it.
If I remember right they used a flare to lure the zombies away from the building with the medical supplies so they could go in safely. I feel like the dumb mistake was just barging out the door when they had everything and announcing their presence to the zombies.
Let's just say that for what ever hypothetical reason both of them did have to go in. Once they had gathered everything, if they had just cracked the door open a bit and seen all the zombies had returned, they could have taken a minute to formulate a plan to distract them so they could get away safely.

Otis is a hunter so dragging the huge heavy load wouldn't be much of a problem for him and keep in mind he was the one putting walkers in the barn. Even if it wasn't the right call for Shane, consider that it took this guy like 2 hours of research to come to an objective conclusion.
Shane had a few seconds to make his choice!
It's not like he was sitting quietly in a safe room with maps and rulers to make accurate calculations. He simply made a gut decision and went for the scenario that promised the highest probability for Carl's survival.

Should have just taken both bags from Otis first to try to allow Otis to maybe get ahead or reach the car first, that only being his reasoning of course then he would kneecap him lol. I feel bad for Otis but it was either both them and Carl die, or one of them + Carl live. I mean Shane even told Otis to leave him it is not like it was his first thought, it literally came from there being no other choice for survival. Hey maybe just maybe (doubt) Otis could reach the car and Shane could barely keep out of reach of the horde with two bags (with his busted ankles he wouldn't lol), then Otis could either lead some of the Horde away or start the car early then pick up Shane.

I know I’m a bit late to this, but I can kinda understand Shane’s reasoning here, even if it was morally fucked up. He genuinely loved Carl and viewed him as his own son, and I think almost any father woulda done anything to save their child in that situation.
Now it’s not IMPOSSIBLE that they coulda made it, but it’s really not something they should be counting on, considering both were injured at the time. In Shane’s eyes, he gave Otis a chance to live and he unfortunately didn’t take it.
Now that doesn’t make what Shane did right on a moral standpoint. I think he shoulda just shot him in the head so Otis wouldn’t have to suffer, but it was a spur of the moment decision. Otis didn’t deserve that death though.
This is why I love Shane. At the beginning, he was good person and didn’t do anything wrong, but his downfall is just sad to watch.

Dude no there was not a sacrifice needed.
It was Ricks fault that He DID NOT teach the group the walker guts technique, or let Shane know about it, it was a one time fling and not done again, wt the world?
    WOAH!
If they did the walker technique, Shane instead of killing Otis and Carl by taking him by force and “morality”
This is where morality and tacticality merge.
In order to get to Carl In Time he CANNOT take Otis with him in the car or by walking realistically, it is not possible without sacrificing Carl without time equivalent speed with Carls injury.
He needs to leave him behind, IN ORDER for both to live and Carls life.
Knowing Otis need to say he was willing to get left behind as well as Shane they would have agreed that this was the best scenario this would mean that Shane would have higher chance to live as he would get to the farm in the universe time and save Carl.
ITS WHAT OTIS WOULD HAVE WANTED.
⭐️In this Universe Shane knows about the guts technique and puts all over him and Otis.
    Like RICK TAUGHT GLENN.
So they make a plan that Shane has a better chance to make it to the car even with his injury.
As Otis is not physically fit, Otis agrees and wants the best chance for the boy Carl to get his meds even if it means Otis is at a disadvantage for the night.
As the night dawns Carl will slowly recover as Otis slowly enters into hell and chaos as he knows haw will be stuck with walkers for a very long time at least the night (10-13 hrs) before the group goes to rescue him.
Shane promises to Otis that he will tell the group that he will come back for him in the morning when everyone is rested and ready to rescue him not Rick as he is tending Carl.
Or if it’s really Nightmare mode and Otis knows it’s going to get bad real quick, everyone except the grimes family and dale go to get Otis and Glenn doing a diversion at midnight.
Shane decided a quiet spot for Otis to hide in with his guts disguise, and to stay there for the night until they come.
THIS IS THE LOST ENDING I WANT PEOPLE TO SEE.
Shane’s good motive lead to wrong execution.

If i recall correctly, there was a few moments where they just stood around letting the walkers catch up. for example: right before Shane shot Otis, they stood there and talked for a few seconds as the walkers gained on them. I think the main thing that killed Otis was hesitation and poor planning, like @FDR_progressive_liberal said in their comment: they should've had one of them in the truck as a distraction. It kind of feels odd to me that neither of them did something like that, considering Shane had the forethought to use flares to distract the walkers on their way in, not to mention that Otis was the one putting walkers in Hershel's barn and would obviously have experience around them, it just feels like they got dumber the longer they were at the high school.

People really don't understand context very well, do they.
Their WHOLE conversations in those scenes revolved around how 1 or BOTH of them were not gonna make it. They knew that BOTH of them were done for if something wasn't done. Shane offered for him to be the one that stayed behind to allow Otis enough time to escape. Otis wouldn't have it and was dead set on both of them going down. So Shane took matters into his own hands.

It seems like the scene is divisive in part because it breaks immersion or otherwise makes it difficult to engage with given the general millieu of zombie lore, making the job of discussing it entirely from a Watsonian perspective and engaging with it seriously just that much more difficult or just unpalatable to many.

Just like the plot demanded stumbling and bumbling zombies to have coherent footing and not trip over each other and debris strewn across the parking lot. Let's not even assume they would trip and fall down the very hills and inclines mentioned. Somehow, they can even walk up stairs just fine without falling. Who could've guessed? 👀 Good research tho.

Your right but according to your logic shane didn't need to kill otis then, rather just take the bags and go up ahead, have otis use the last of his ammo while shane continues by the time otis finishes shane should have made a good enough distance that if otis were to be grabbed it'll be a better distraction compared to shooting otis and wrestling with him for as you say 36 seconds getting more tired and hurt in the process, otis would have died either way this time just a bit closer to car but nothing would have changed, and the best thing would have been that shane wouldn't have been laid on by otis so he'd be better health wise in canon so hed be faster.

@TheRealCaptainGold doesn't matter shane should have said for otis to stay behind for a bit to catch his breathe while he takes the stuff and he goes up ahead. Otis was willing to die for carl, he literally said that shane leaves otis, otis waits the same time as they fought in canon and then he continues, now more rested.
Otis now has a decent chance of survival now without the gear on him and if he doesn't survive it doesn't matter because now he's distracting the walkers and shane gets away the same like in canon, shane meanwhile has more stamina due to the lack of fighting (even in canon shane knew he had to wrestle otis for his supplies), and has a 36 second head start (again shane knew he had to waste time fighting otis). And the best thing is that in a absolute best scenario both shane and otis survive.
But I can't blame shane he's human and like everyone he makes tactical errors shooting otis is one.

      @@nani4249
      1. Shane is actually more injured than Otis. So, you’d want Otis to carry the bags further up. Not Shane.
      2. A 36 second break isn’t gonna be enough to refresh their stamina. As someone who’s worked at Amazon warehouses, trust me. That ain’t no break lol
      3. You’d still have to waste time waiting for the guy left behind. Gives the Walkers time to catch up. And if the dude with all the bags trip, he ain’t got no one to help him up. Not a bullet-proof plan. Best plan is the plan that gets the Walkers off of their a**es and that’s cappin’ Otis.
Fact of the matter is, at that point they were cooked. If you want them both to survive, you have to change their decisions earlier in the raid. But that’s not the point of this video. The point is to show how delusional it is to say “they could’ve both made it!” at the point Shane shot Otis.

    • @nani4249
      @nani4249 Před 2 měsíci +1

@TheRealCaptainGold 1. Not shane would still be faster and would still have a higher chance of survival than otis
      2. The break for otis isn't entirely for him to recover just for shane to go up so if or when otis does get grabbed at least shane is further and there would be logic for otis to stick behind for him to recover energy more, even if it wouldn't help much. (So more like a mentality such as I'll rest here for 15 seconds and then go forward, more powerful)
      3. Did I say shane would have waited for otis, if otis was right there and shane drove up to him then that'd be good both get to survive and it wouldnt a big lapse of judgement, but if otis was to far away or shane couldn't see him he drives away instead the plan was for otis to maybe live but shane survive. And shane would be more likely to trip if shane did what he did in canon fight otis for the bag, and then run with 2 bags.
You said the best thing is to get the walkers of there a**s yet that shooting otis only got the walkers off shane behind, the best plan would have been having otis wait around under the idea of rest and recovery for shane to run forward with the bags, then when otis decides to walk again he does and if he gets grabbed at least shane survived and shane wouldn't feel as bad as he did and if somehow otis managed to survive as long for shane to go in the car and see him if the risk is to high leave otis and if the risk is low drive to him.

I feel like you gave me amunition to just destroy your argument. So youre telling me that not only did the two men lose 34 seconds in a fight because of the gun shot(making Shane even more exhausted than he already was) you are also telling me that its insanely hard to carry a 50 or so pound bag with an injured ankle. Now comes the fun part, youre telling me its better for Shane to carry 100 pounds worth of equipment alone instead because Otis dying buys him time?Wouldnt them sharing the equipment load buy them time and save energy of carrying such heavy weight? Not having a fight saves time? Having four hands to kill any walkers who come across them instead of just two hands. Not to mention that the 100 + pounds would increase the load on Shane who was already barely limping, it would be next to impossible for a human to carry 100+ pounds very far, let alone with a freaking injured ankle. This scene does not make any sense whatsoever but you making this video just makes it even more clear that shooting Otis was just about the stupidiest thing to do. In my opinion.
The issue isnt Otis sacrificing himself, if Otis had just stayed behind like Shane told in his fake story, nobody would of have batted an eye, the problem is that Shane is willing to take such actions just to save his gut, without thinking about other people than himself
A comment from Clashed Prs Shane video explained this perfectly:
    ProfessuhLemon:
"His selfishness was the problem, his attitude on the apocalypse and walkers and survival were all right. But that attitude only existed to ultimately serve himself, not for the better of the group. If Rick, or Daryl, or Glenn or anyone else were in Otis's place, they'd get a bullet too. That's why Shane had to go."

    • @TheRealCaptainGold
      @TheRealCaptainGold  Před 3 měsíci +8

I covered this in my other video. Shane offered to sacrifice himself and Otis wouldn’t allow for it. It’s as Robert Kirkman himself stated in an old interview - Shane initially was not a “dastardly villain” he really did genuinely care about the group. That is, until his mental state deteriorated to the point where he was too far gone. Killing Otis added severely to that mental decline. He didn’t want to kill Otis. He didn’t feel good about it. If he really was selfish and uncaring, it wouldn’t have affected his mental state in the way that it did. Shane had adapted faster than anyone, but this quick adaptation didn’t allow his mind and emotions to catch up. So, despite the fast adaptation - Rick would ultimately be stronger than Shane.
I encourage anyone to rewatch the episode (and the one prior). Hell, rewatch the first two seasons and watch the deleted footage. Shane wasn’t selfish and stuck with Otis until there wasn’t any other choice left for him. Anyone who says this was a “selfish” decision doesn’t understand the character or the events depicted in the episode. Shane isn’t too far gone during the episode he sacrifices Otis. This version of Shane would have saved Otis if he could, because he saved him and covered him more than once prior to the sacrifice.
