Look at the dad's expression right before he laughs it off; he doesn't think she's joking. The reason he laughed it off, IMO, was because he knew his wife was a homophobe (watch her scene with Naomi) and he was trying to protect Emily from her. Look at Rob (the father) and Emily's interaction in the fourth season...
Yeah her dad knew. He pretended it was a joke because he knew the mom was homophobic. Thats why they showed the mom's expression at 1:26 of her buying into what he was saying.
Katy knew as well, that's why she told emily to shut up at 1:33 when she was trying to tell their dad she was being serious. Basically everyone but the mom took it seriously.

Emily is fucking awesome, true. But God, Katie's development is far better. Because Emily still chose to defend and protect egomaniac self centered Naomi who had ruined her life, while Katie grew some knowledge and went onto being a smart independent woman who actually cared and loved other people then herself.

These are the moments I just wish I could go back in time. When watching this behind my family's back was the biggest worry and care I had in the world haha. Simple times I miss it.
Emily's father is such a cool and smart guy easily understand wats going down around. He knew she is a gay fs and tried to make it unclear with laughs 😊
The family was always awful to Emily. And somehow everything was always her fault or she was always in the wrong, literally somehow Katie was always painted as the victim and Emily never got an apology from any of them.
Yeah, when they came to stay at Naomi’s house and somehow it ends with everyone looking at Emily like a disappointment? Her mother was a homophobe, Katie was constantly tearing her down, and even when it came out Naomi cheated which caused Emily’s rage-aholic arc it still somehow seemed to sell the message Emily was the problem.

this reminds me of when my mother’s friend came out to her family and her sister got jealous because she was supposed to be the rebellious one. her parents also called a psychologist to come to their house and talk to her, but at least the psychologist was supportive and told her to do what she wanted with her life.
I remember watching this when I was in 7th grade, I was 12. I’m 22 now and this is still one of my favorite shows.
