The adult characters in the show parents/teachers and the odd drug dealer are not shown in the best light. Only JJ seems to have a really good mother in season 3. Freddie's dad awful. Tony and Effy's dad too highly strung and reactionary. Cook's parents dire. Chris's dad awful. Jal's dad too hard. Michelle's mum okay but still difficult. Thomas mum okay but too hard, Pandora's mum okay, the twins' parents were too inattentive to their daughters needs. The creator of the show said “Our philosophy is that teenagers think grown-ups behave in very strange and warped ways....What we wanted to do was give a slightly exaggerated version of that perspective, with the parents behaving disgracefully, swearing all the time, being in terrible relationships and being appalling parents. We wanted to reflect that perspective.”
I love how this show had all of these stereotypical Southern families that looked normal on the surface but were actually disfunctional, like the Stonem's.

@@leew1598 by series 7 the Effy, Cassie and Cook are technically all adults so the portrayal of other adults in their stories becomes least comical or slapstick and more serious. Plus by season 7 the tone had totally changed.
I'm from the US and when I saw "Southern" it made me curious about the areas of the UK, what is the stereotype?
@@TheRealMCMXCIII There is more poverty up North due to decreased government spending and massive deindustrialization leading to greater inequality and unemployment in the North. This has led to educational quality, healthcare, and pretty much everything else being lower in quality. There is more prosperity down South leading to Southerners being stereotyped as snobbier and pretentious. For some, it might be the case but it's largely that there are more opportunities down South so more people have nicer lives on average. One example, I work at a hospital up North and only drink properly filtered coffee instead of instant which is what most of the staff and patients drink. That's why I bring a flask of freshly made coffee and never drink the instant stuff in the hospital staff room and people call me 'posh' for that when filtered coffee is pretty basic everywhere else.

I think the reason the dad doesn't stand up for Emily is because he feels he can't talk against his wife. He reveals he cheated on her before so he worries he can't disagree with her, or she'll leave him. U could tell he rlly wants to help Emily tho

It real sad seeing Katie trying to get Emily to stay. Such as using there language. And trying to convince her to stay and at the same time defending her mother . This shows she wants her sister there with her because Emily is the tuff twin but has to also side with her mother. Katie has to put on a smile to please everyone in her life and can't complain even if she needs too and has to be by everyone's side.

Even though friendships become really important to teenagers around this age the show always made a point of still writing and developing scenes with the parents too. Parents still matter a lot in a teenagers life.

@toothpicks in ur toes Obviously Emily basically being banished out the house due to her homophobic mother is sad, but James openly hitting on Naomi and the dad trying to justify it is to me, one of the funniest scenes in the show. The part where it's revealed Katie's boyfriend is short is also low-key hilarious considering how random it is

The whole family always treated Emily like shit and somehow she was always shown as in the wrong. When their family lost their home and had to ran to Emily after kicking her out, the mom only cared about how Katie being upset.
