    Ragnarok is the twilight of the Norse gods. Its inception is when Loki brings about the death of Baldur, the youngest of Odin's son. What follows is the darkening and loss of hope all through the nine realms. Mankind falls into depravity and war. The interesting thing is that all the gods know their fate to some degree. Thor is fated to fight the Jormungandr, the World Serpent. He does defeat the serpent, but he is bitten and dies of the venom. Odin is killed by the Fenris Wolf, who has by then eaten the sun, as well. Surtur, the king of Fire Giants, sails the ship Naglfar, made of dead man's nails, from Muspelheim. Basically the whole pantheon of gods die, as to almost all humans on Midgard. The world is destroyed and reborn anew. This is all a really high level overview, and I didn't look at the mythology to check every fact. This is the basic idea, though. Hope it helps.

      Correct all the main gods and goddesses die with the exception of Fryea. The younger gods will survive such as Vidar who rips Fenris apart with his bare hands as revenge for killing his father Odin. Thor's sons Modi and Magni and some of the lesser goddesses such as Eir will survive to rebuild. As a follower of Asatru I believe Ragnarok is cyclical. It happens constantly birth, death, rebirth. I don't take it literal but everybody has their own interpretation and opinions on it.
      But thank you for explaining it much more eloquently then I could have 👍🏻

      @holmgeirgautreksson2451 Před 6 lety +13

      Surtr doesn't actually sail on Naglfari, it's steered by the giant Hrym. I might be remembering this wrong, but I think Surtr makes his entrance by cutting a hole in the sky for him and his followers to jump through (he definitely sets sky on fire after Ragnarok, though).

    Johan from Amon Amarth is quite a historical scholar about Norse Mythology, and most of their songs are about this stuff. Both true historical events and battles of gods and monsters. He might actually speak to you, as he seems to be keen to discuss all this stuff. Amon Amarth means "Mount Doom" in the Black Speech of Lord of the Rings (essentially).

    Thor is being like a messiah you can say but in the norse mythology is also described as really stubborn and angry some times . This shows hes not perfect even as a god and has weakness and constantly learning (in norse mythology understanding your failures and weakness and the pursue of knowledge is almost a core subject. ) Fenris or Fenrir is a giant wolf and he is a offspring of the god Loki and his brother the world serpent jormungand. Also if not mistaken this song is about Thor's first encounter with Jormungand where he went for fishing and caught the world serpent and fought with him. In the norse language Hlodyn is another name. for odin as far as i know also. Hope this helps

    • @daveemerson6549

      Close.......it's about Thor and Jormungandr, but it's also about their final battle at Ragnarok, where they're fated to kill each other. Thor's strength is too much for the serpent, but in their struggle, Thor is poisoned. He walks nine steps from the site of their battle and dies. (Hence the "Ride to meet your fate, your destiny awaits." in the chorus)

    Thor does maybe resemble a Messianic character in the Marvel universe, but NOT so in the real Norse mythology! He is incredibly strong, one of the strongest gods among the Aesir, but he is considered short-tempered and also a rash decision maker. He is a god of war and ain't afraid to show it! Maybe he could be considered a more military oriented Messiah like the Jews were expecting. Someone who would take over the world by force and rule over it with might.

      Others associated with war are Freja, Odin, Tyr and Ullr.
      And the song is about Thor's fight with Jormundgandir (the world serpent). Could go further into the tale, but tricky when writing on my phone :P Vin! But Neil Gaiman's book "Norse Mythology" and read it all for yourself.. much better 😉

    I love the melody on this .. Scandinavian Melodic Death Metal, like this, was a big part of what really got me into Metal (in particular, Dark Tranquillity's "Damage Done" Album, back in in 2002). I don't listen to it as much, but I'll just never dislike it in general. I will however say I definitely prefer this song to the In Flames you reacted too.
    Instead of requesting Agalloch for the 100th time, in case you read this comment, I'll instead mention something I you surely won't ever react to, but I feel like "sharing", since you mentioned "Epic", and here I am talking about Swedish Melodeath and stuff.
    There was this band called Edge of Sanity, started by a guy called Dan Swano, who has a massive body of work in metal, lots of albums with lots of different bands, he sings (both growls and clean vocals), plays multiple instuments, and also produced\engineered\mixed multiple albums (even Opeth albums). It wasn't just a "Melodeath" band, it was a Progressive Death Metal band that still was very melodic.
    And that band released a concept album called "Crimson", in 1996, which consisted of a single 40minute song, telling a story about a world where humanity cannot reproduce anymore (and then subsequent events). All I'm gonna say is that it's fantastic, one of best albums I've had the pleasure of hearing, as I love both melodic\progressive death metal and concept albums. And It was released back in 1996, a year before In Flames Whoracle, and more importantly before Opeth's My arms, your Hearse and Still Life, other Concept Albums in the "Progressive Death Metal" genre that followed.

    I know enough Norse mythology to clear some things up. The world serpent, Jörmungandr is one of the three kids of Loki. Jörmungandr the world serpent, Fenris a great wolf, and Hel a half dead girl are all Loki´s kids out of wedlock with a giant woman. Odin, who has sacrificed his eye for unlimited wisdom, banishes the world serpent to the oceans and Hel to Helheim (the realm of the dead). Fenris through treachery they bind with an unbreakable silk chain when he gets too big and might for the gods to feel safe around. You see, Odin has seen a vision of Ragnarok, the end of the world, and knows that Lokis children fight against the gods. What he does not realize is that by trying to prevent that he instills anger in those three and makes them hate the gods. A self fulfilling prophecy if you will. Come Ragnarok, the world serpent will rise from the depths and fight Thor and lose but poison him in the process. Thor will die of the wound, Fenris will fight Odin and win, and the world will end. Loki and his children will in the end fight against the gods.
    What you need to realize is that comparing norse mythology to christianity does not work and here is why. One of the first things you will realize if you start researching norse mythology is that the gods, and particularly Thor and Odin, are complete and utter cunts. They will screw others over and be cruel just for their own benefit. The nordic peoples feared their gods, they did not simply worship them. Loki is ofter portrayed as the bad guy and a lying trickster, you guys will probably say that he sounds like the nordic version of Satan. But if I have to be honest, Loki is the best of the bunch. He and his children will betray the gods at Ragnarok, but they will be completely justified in their actions. Loki is treated like shit by the other gods, while he ends up saving their ass more often than not. He is a very very complex character for a mythological being. So you see Thor has little to no Jesus parallells and neither does Odin to the christian God. They are treacherous, they are lying and and thieving beings who only care about themselves. Sorry for the essay, but I am passionate on the subject of norse mythology :P

      Hel was not banished to Helheim per se, she was appointed by Odin to oversee the realm of the dead. Pretty much all the dead go to Helheim, except those who go the hall of the Norse God they are called to. Hel is the daughter of Loki and his first wife, the Jotun Angrboda. Jormugandr and Fenris are also their children.

      What you describes as being "complete and utter cunts" is simply them being like humans.
      Im pretty sure Christinas also fear their god, i would think probably more than the noric people did. Im not an expert but there seems to be more threts of punishment in chrisitanity while the norse gods mainly where there to protect the humans.

    • @ivangushkov3651
      @ivangushkov3651 Před 6 lety

      Yea all the gods are cunts Loki included. What I was trying to say is that he seems like the most relatable to me. I can at least understand why he acts the way he does. As I said, he is actually a really complex character. Whatever you say of Loki he is not a vilain, he is an anti hero at worst. Now that I think about it Tyr was the only one not happy about what they did to Fenris, so he is OK too I guess. But in no way are they benevolent beings like the christian God so my point still stands :P

    A few points that might help clarify the situation: Vingthor is Thor in his battle form, a terrifying war-God whose strength is beyond mortal imagination. Hlodyn, consort of Odin and mother of Thor is a giantess, personification of the uncivilized Earth. Thor Odin'son is brash and less cunning than his adopted brother Loki. Jormundgandr the world-serpent is an offspring of Loki. A great sea-serpent that has coiled completely around Midgard, the human world. Thor is the guardian of Midgard, so during the Norse apocalypse Ragnarok, Thor encounters Jormundgandr in mortal combat. Thor grasps Jormundgandr's tongue and strikes him dead with Mjolnir, but in the process is poisoned by Jormungandr's incurable venom, then walks nine steps and perishes. This song is about the guardian of humanity making his last stand against primordial chaos and the destruction of the entire human realm, and although he succeeds he also fails. Ultimately all nine worlds are destroyed and then reborn following the events of Ragnarok.

    I haven't read all the comments to see if this is covered yet, but the song is called Twilight of the Thunder God because during Ragnarok Thor battles the Midgard Serpent, Jormungandr, and kills him but dies in the process.
    From Snorri Sturluson's Prose Edda:
    "Thor will slay the Midgard Serpent but stagger back only nine paces before he falls down dead, on account of the poison blown on him by the serpent."

    Its called Twilight of the Thunder God because Thor does not survive the battle with Jormangadr at Ragnarok. He kills the serpent, but dies from its venom shortly after. A good song to follow this is As Loke Falls, which is also about the events of Ragnarok.

    For the underground show. Either In De Naam Van De Duivel or The Possession Process by Carach Angren. They're a symphonic black metal band that writes their albums as horror stories. These two work as stand alone songs though. Think you guys will love em.
    And Babel's Gate by Septic Flesh. Symphonic Death metal and you'd get a kick out of the lyrics.
    Also you guys need to do the whole of Damnation And A Day by Cradle Of Filth. Best Cradle album in my opinion and the album tells the story of Satan before his fall all the way to his defeat. Seeing how you guys dissect this stuff is amazing.

    • @AeolethNionian
      @AeolethNionian Před 6 lety

      That is a good one but every Carach Album is a concept album and I can only think of a few songs off of albums that aren't dance and laugh amongst the rotten that work equally as well as stand alone songs without the context of the rest of the album.

    • @LuthienC
      @LuthienC Před 6 lety +1

      I can see what you're saying, especially since these two seem to not like being dropped in on one song from a concept album. Music is fluid for me, in that I can listen to a concept album in its entirety, and take in the concept, but singular songs of the album listened to at random can have a totally different feel or meaning to me. To me Funerary Dirge is one of those where you do not need the whole concept to "get it" as intended. I can't wait for ANY Carach Angren though, so I am happy either way. :)

    Yes! Thanks for reacting to Amon Amarth, as for why it's called "twilight of the thunder god" it's because in norse mythology Thor dies fighting Jormungandr during the events of Ragnarök (the death of many of the gods and destruction of the world so it can later be born anew), also Amon Amarth means "Mount Doom" in Sindarin from the J. R. R. Tolkien universe, you should check out their song "Thousand Years of Oppression" or "Destroyer of the Universe". You should also check out the band Týr for more norse goodness, I recommend the songs "Hall of Freedom" or "Hold the Heathen Hammer High".

    As some other have stated this is a story of Ragnarok. Fenris is a giant sized wolf. Jormungandr is a giant world serpent. His body is wrapped around the world. Hlödyn is another name for Jord, Thor’s mother. Odin however is married to the goddess Frigg. Vingtor is another name for Thor. Like saying battle Thor. Mjölnir is Thor’s hammer. You can read about all of this in the Prose and Poetic Edda’s. We get the days of the week, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from Norse mythology. Wednesday is “day of Odin”. Thursday is Thor’s Day and Friday is the day of Frigg.

    In the final battle he kills the serpent, but ultimately dies from its venom. That's the "Twilight" part, as Thor is one of the gods that dies in Ragnarok. The messianic part is that he knows his fate.
