Trinity was the 1st person to actually defeat an agent, and live.
More or less. Actually defeating an agent (for good at least) is impossible. Even when Neo "killed" Smith, Smith just came back. Albeit, rogue, but came back nonetheless. So actually "defeating" one would mean escaping them, or eliminating or avoiding all bluepills in the immediate area to keep from being approached by one in the first place.
@@thegeneral4943 Jones and Brown were defeated, then.
I like that the first confirmed "kill" on an agent in the movie was Trinity. I bet they give a medal for that.
It was a teamwork thing tbf. She had the opportunity because he was distracted.
Was neo not technically first because he faced off against the agent and dodged his bullets and lived? Trinity killed him yes but neo faced and survived first

@@Spacemonkeymojo It's not strictly true. There are multiple times where emotion is evident in the Matrix.
You aren't safe in the matrix. Anyone that isn't one of you is potentially one if them in an instant. It is strictly business and on alert at all times. That's how you stay alive. The woman in the red dress program teaches you this. A slight lapse can be fatal.

When two of the most iconing moments in the whole cinema history, Neo dodging the bullets and Trinity's "Dodge This!" are only 10 seconds apart, you know it's a fucking masterpiece!
0:18 Neo hadn't even seen the Agent yet but just from looking at the fear in Trinity's face, he KNEW and didn't hesitate for a moment when he turned around and unload the clips. When he failed, his instinct was to fall back on Trinity for advice, which shows you she was more than just a potential 'love interest', she was also a mentor to him like Morpheus.
I mean, it's not even about being a mentor. She was simply more experienced than him and also the only other friendly person standing there. It was a natural reaction.
I think, she would have looked similar if it was Niobe, to help and also punish them to return to zion, instead of an agent. And then this would have been a lol scene. :) after Neo turns and shoots :P
Magazines, not clips! lol
@RED VIPER lol…Thought I better do so in a positive manner before someone else calls him all sorts of names for using the wrong terminology…cheers!

Definitely
It did. But I feel it doesnt hold up that well.
Legend became myth.
And for two and a half thousand years this scene passed out of all knowledge.
Until, when chance came, it ensnared a new viewer.
The scene came to the creature CZcams who took it deep into the servers of the internet.
And there, it grew again.
CZcams brought to this scene unnatural views.
For a collective 500 years it was viewed, and in the gloom of CZcams's website it waited.
Darkness crept back into the corners of the internet
Rumors grew of a Movie in the archives, whispers of a nameless film.
And the scene of power perceived, it's time had come.
It abandoned CZcams.
But something happened then, the scene did not intend...

You can't really explain just how groundbreaking and fucking incredible this scene is nowadays. CGI and cool looking shots are just another toy movies work with, but this sequence was literally like nothing anyone had ever seen before on film.
You just had to be there to understand how special and groundbreaking this was and still is.
I know the slow-mo bullet dodging is what put The Matrix on the map in a lot of contemporary discussions at the time, but damn, the composition of the shot at 1:00 when Trinity says 'dodge this' is the true highlight of this sequence IMO. It's less than a second long, but it's a work of art particularly with the camera angle they used and the follow up scene with the Agent going down. I love these movies and the Wachowski sisters so much
nowadays is more appreciated because "bullet time" has been commoditized but back then bullet time was the real innovation in mainstream filmmaking.
Let's appreciate the fact that Trinity took the time to go up to the agent and assume the cool stance before announcing "dodge this".
And from the position directly visible to the agent to the position just beside him, without the agent barely noticing.
You must be nice in parties.
@@antoniomf8399 And the fact that the agent fell backwards after being shot which doesn't correspond to his position while being shot from behind.

From Trinity's perspective Neo dodged exactly like the Agent did moments prior. From Neo's perspective he was terrified and just trying to live and didn't realize what he was doing. Time was relative in that moment due to Neo being The One and the power that comes with it.

I've always found it interesting that, for all the parodies this scene generated, none of them remembered that Neo ultimately got shot regardless. Neo himself is even the first to note that it didn't work in the end.
I think Robot Chicken goes the _other_ direction, he does the smooth backwards dodge but one bullet lands a headshot on him at the end 😂
What makes this scene (and the whole movie honestly) brilliant is kind of behind the scenes. In 1999 industry was obviously limited in what can be achieved. But that's the exact thing that gave us the creative solutions that made shots like that possible (while bullet time etc. was obviously sucking budget dry, i believe it was still fully squeezed to convey exactly what was needed with lowest cost possible). It was an unintented creative limitation, which also made directors pick the scenes really carefully, instead of throwing slow-mo and bullet time every chance they get. Less is more sometimes
Such constraints sort out the good from the best. Fail under this kind of limitations, and what you've tried to do will never be heard of. Succeed, and you will have made History, like Star Wars or The Matrix.
Indeed. But unfortunately scenes which are mainly based on what is possible at the time of their creation rather than having anything to tell don't age too well. And this is no exception.

@@Johsther I love trinity, but it was pretty stupid of her to announce herself with a one liner before shooting. Like what if he had dodged it?
@@anatoldenevers237 very true, I mean if I was the agent and heard the gun point towards me, I'd instantly do the spinaroonie thingie he did with his upperbody and maybe grab the gun from Trinity
I've seen this scene a billion times and never noticed this: but at 0:52 we can see the agent's shadow covering Neo's right eye as the agent approaches. Then when it cuts to Neo's perspective in the next shot, the agent is just to the right of the sun, obscured by the light until he brings his gun up. Such a great little bit of consistency and cinematography hiding in a scene with way more going on
And then that consistency is totally gone the next cut, when the and the agent are in a completely different position relative to neo, with the agent facing a different direction
still get shivers when I watch this scene, it was groundbreaking in film at the time
Legendary scene, but I noticed no one is questioning where Neo's guns went once the slow mo sequence starts.
yep. The same happens with Trinity. In the previous shots she is on Neo's right. And then she dissappears. Still an awesome a never-to-forget scene.
That's how great the scene is
Lmao funny how some of the most famous movies have glaring lapses in continuity.
