i revisit this every few years. something about it… it’s one of my favorite scenes ever. i’m about to become a first time father and went through my first round of chemo at 41, hits harder than ever.
haven't seen this movie in years. idk if i remembered the song first or this scene but whichever came first, reminded me of the other. the touching message of this moment, this scene stuck with me forever. love it. there was an event of some sort where "weatherman" was giving a speech about his father and all he was able to get out, before he was interrupted by something, was "when i think about my father... i'm reminded of, Bob Seger's 'like a rock'...". weatherman expressed his disappointment, "that was my speech... something about bob seger." no one seemed to care about his speech cut short. but later his father comes to him and plays him this song... Michael Caine Like a rock... you will be missed
It poetically explains the whole metaphor of the frostee scenes. Why not just chuck it at the weather man? Easy life with no substance brought on by struggle, which is exactly what Cage is struggling with in the movie.
I have seen this scene many times it always makes me feel sad, I think when his dad said he has time, he should have never gotten out of the car and back to that job.
Hate this movie; Hate Cage's character - i can't watch it through without feeling gross and uncomfortable, and I try not to think too hard about why I would hate a character so much or why a movie would make me feel like that. This line, it hit the first moment I heard it, and hit a lot harder later on, and it is likely only going to hit harder still with age. When I was 23, I couldn't imagine anyone being old enough and tired enough that they'd reach the end at 75 or 80 or even 100 and be at peace with passing on. Even now at 43, I still have no desire to be done with life yet, but I think I understand a bit better why in another 30-40 I might be OK with there being an expiration date.
Say what you will about Nick Cage, but this is one of the best scenes in any movie, imo.
