Bowie was a true artist. Not only did he explore all kinds of music, he thoroughly explored his own sexuality and made it part of his music. At various times he told the press that he was bisexual, gay, and years later, settled on "closet heterosexual". Witty and wise, he always felt comfortable in and around the gay community and was a true friend and supporter to the end. Usually, there is no particular reason to go into an artist's private life. But in this case, it so informs his 70's work, that one must acknowledge the elephant in the room.

After tributes to Warhol and Dylan, this is a hommage to Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground. I just love Ronson's guitar on this track.
For your next Bowie album why not turn to his first proper album - 1969's Space Oddity? It's not like any other album in Bowie's catalog, being a folk/psychedelic rock record, but it still has some great songs on it and some of Bowie's best vocals.

The previous song was Bowie in Dylan mode and this time it's Bowie in Lou Reed mode ! This is Hunky Dory's rockiest track. it already points to the glam-rock side of Ziggy & co. but for me, it's even better. For Bowie's next album, you actually have several options. Either you stay in this register with Aladdin Sane, or you go ahead with the Berlin trilogy (Low, "Heroes", Lodger) or you take the tangent with the soul of Young Americans !!!

Musically, this is unremarkable but as a finished recording, it's excellent. It's the little extras that make this memorable rather than the melody line. Yes, the vocals are almost proto-punk, the guitar is dirty and the rhythm section are always in danger of being left behind. Sounds like an outtake from White Light/White Heat and that's exactly what he was going for.

Bowie's charming handwritten liner notes on the back cover of Hunky Dory say in regard to this song, 'Some VU White Light returned with thanks', (referring to the song White Light/White Heat). It's a cliche now but hardly anyone was aware of the Velvets until Lou Reed's solo career focused attention on them. In the beginning outside of Warhol's Factory crowd and the New York art and avant garde scene they were largely ignored. They sold hardly any records in their lifetime, but again as the cliche goes (popularised I think by Eno), everyone that saw them formed a band. Bowie was probably one of the few people at the time that was listening to them in the UK in 71 when Hunky Dory came out. Of course later on he produced Transformer for Lou, with Mick Ronson doing the piano arrangements. This is another reason why I love Bowie. The amount of other bands he got me into growing up in the 70's, from The Stooges and The Velvets to krautrock bands like Kraftwerk, Can and Neu during his electronic phase. He never stood still, always ahead of the curve. I said on another comment thread the other day, for people like me growing up in the Uk in the 70's he was my generations Elvis.

Hey JP ! Nice review, as always :) !
You realize, of course, that you've created havok in the comments just by mentioning the next Bowie album to review :D ?
Naturally, I'll go for "Outside", which I'm pretty sure you'll love, but since it's probably not popular enough (and this channel is not here for my own little pleasure, alas...), I'd suggest you move out of his Glam years and step forward a few years to his Berlin Trilogy. "Low" would be a great choice, I guess.
Btw, I don't think you ever reacted to the Velvet Underground yet ? "The Velvet Underground & Nico" is one of those albums that not only influenced rock music : it created a whole branch of genres. Rumor has it, that only a handful of people listened to this abum when It got out. And each one of them created a rock band ! Don't know if it's true, but the thought itself is beautiful ^^ !

This song would never exist if Lou Reed hadn't existed. But Lou Reed could never have written this song, for as "out there" as the Velvet Underground were,
being Americans, they didn't have quite the same grasp of campiness as the Brits do.
This song is a RIOT. Hysterically funny, sexy and hard rocking at the same time. Lou Reed's sense of humour was far too serious for this sort of thing.
The closest he got to it was arguably on "Transformer", which, surprise surprise, was produced (and largely written) by Bowie!
Anyway, it's a hell of a feelgood song, and there aren't too many of those in the Bowie discography. Shame, really. He was great fun when he let loose.

Now i admit that The Velvet Underground may have suffered a slightly bigger injustice than DB as far as my ability to listen without prejudice is concerned.
I take DB for granted, and leave it be on most occasions. But this song took me to Transformer by Lou Reed, which made me realise that The Velvet Underground has remained underground, out of earshot for me.
Wow. You’ve just mentioned them! That’s symmetrical synchronised sensibility innit.
So to summarise, John Cale says Yeah I’m Welsh but Lou isn’t, nor Nico eirher but give us a chance.
    Listen without Prejudice Vol 2?
Alternatively, the Triffids are movin in on me, JP! Time is short. Try the 2 openers on Born Sandy Devotional, you’ll be moved I’m sure.
    Ta!

It's a very caddy, gay culture song, very much a nod to Lou Reed and VU.
