    Thank you for all your efforts. The Saturday opening has actually DECREASED our time in the woods. I will not hunt on Sunday

    I love the Saturday opening. It works out great for my family and work schedule. I can hunt three days and be back in time to help with the kids going back to school on Tues. and when my son and daughter are old enough to go they won’t have miss any school. Schools have gotten a lot stricter on days missed without a doctor’s note since I was in school. So we’ll be creating our own new traditions. And for reference I’m a 4 hour drive to camp.

      "It works out great for my family and work schedule" That may be true, but there are many other families with Thanksgiving holdover relatives or kids visiting. Families that actually shop for the deals that come on Black Fiday. The problems that have been exposed from youth sporting conflicts on Saturday and just the 'Tired" factor if you are involved in a big Thanksgiving dinner. Many hunters followed college football and enjoyed watching their almamater play on Saturday. So your personal situation allows you to hunt the opener, what about those that cannot? The opening day is not the end all as it was decades ago. Less hunters moving deer, 30% harvested by archery now. The Saturday following the Monday opener is as good today as the opener, very little difference anymore. Put in the two Sundays and a 14 day continous season with two full weekends. The monday (buck only) also spread out the harvest beneffitting deer processors that are now swamped from the concurrent Saturday buck and doe harvests. The buck only Monday followed by the doe opener saturday allieviatd that problem. This saturday now is a big mess and rush for too many. I dont know how old you are, or how good of health you are in but older guys dont move as fast and forcing them to rush or drive at night is just wrong.

      I’m 43. And yes, these are all our opinions based on our own personal situations. I just hate to see hunting opportunities taken away. I think our main disagreement is the comment around “forced to rush”. Again (my opinion) is that if you want to hang out at home and shop and watch football, no one is stopping you. Take your time and start on Monday. I love turkey hunting. But I often miss the opener bc I hate the day off immediately after on Sunday. That doesn’t work for my situation. So I wait and go the end of the following week where I can string 3 or 4 days together to maximize my limited hunting time. I’m not going to ask the GC to start the turkey season on Mon, because that would be taking hunting opportunities away from others. If anything I’d ask them to allow hunting on Sunday for the first weekend of spring turkey to open up more opportunity.

    I've seen over and over by many members of your FB group that they always left on Friday morning to go to camp, so what does Black Friday have to do with anything if they always left Friday morning anyway?

    • @openingdaysportsman
      @openingdaysportsman  Před 5 měsíci

      Tim, To respond to this specific question. Not all leave friday....many cannot. If you can leave Friday, you have time on Black friday to stop a few times to patronize rural businesses, restaurants etc. because you know you have plenty of time that day to get to camp possibly around lunch, leaving 4-5 hous of daylight to open up or address any camp problems. Also knowing you have Saturday and Sunday to address any unforseen issues makes the Friday trip a no rush scenario. Having the Saturday and sunday also provides the time for scouting, marking your trail, check or install a stand, go small game or turkey hunting, watch a football game in-between and dozens of other traditions could unfold....With the Saturday opener you have only about 9-1/2 hours of daylight from when you finish your thanksgiving meal and being in the woods saturday morning! Put in some rain or bad weather and that short window decreases. It is just too rushed. Putting the Sunday s in the season and starting Monday benefits everyone.

    If you are waiting till a day or a few days before rifle to get prepared to hunt you shouldn’t be in the woods. If it’s not safe because of the new way please show statistics and how it’s directly related. Quit acting like the traditions have to stop. Sight the rifles in a week before, a month before.

    "Hunting families have been alienated by this move."
    By giving them two extra days to hunt, on the one long autumn weekend which the majority of working adults and kids already have off? This USP/Monday opener coalition derides youth hunts, charities like Hunters Sharing The Harvest, and most doe tags. The PAGC and rational hunters want to get people in the woods hunting more, while your cause is trying everything possible, including legislatively, to limit it. I'm a third generation camp hunter, and the change to Saturday has only made the tradition better. It seems to me like you care more about camping than hunting itself, maybe the State will change the PAGC to the PACC for you!

      My Dad is 84. Because he does Thanksgiving with his wife (like everyone does), he gets to camp late Friday night. He has dinner, and goes to bed for the wakeup call at 4 AM. No time to scout. No time to prep his stand. No time. The same goes for everyone in our camp, except myself and my Uncle, who happen to be single and can arrive Wednesday night.
      The Saturday opener has screwed everything up for us and everyone else we know in G2. The Benezett Store used to open late and packed. Now they close early and its a ghost town.
      As far as the doe tags, When I was 13 (56 now) is was normal to see 20 deer in a day. Now we are all lucky to see a single one.
      My family has been hunting there since 1964.

      I begin my deer season on July 5th, that's when I put boots on the ground with scouting and all preparation for the upcoming season. If you're all so excited about the hunt and experience, then why do you wait until last minute?
      Please provide data to back up your claim on struggling businesses. Otherwise, you're stipulating and using anecdotes.
      If you're still hunting like it's 1964, then you're obviously not going to be very successful.

    • @madhtrr
      @madhtrr Před 5 měsíci

      @@FrankMoro-yu8nw Yea. Conditions change between July and December don't they? I'm up there at least twice a year before the season. You have no idea what I do up there or how I hunt, but you engage in conjecture regardless, and then ask me for macro-level "data" to prove a local real-world observation.
      You can choose to believe me or not. Nothing I can do about that.
      And BTW, I took my last 2 bucks on Saturdays. They were the only deer I saw on those days, and were alone. The herd has been thinned.
