I opened a room and house privileges to a homeless woman who has shuttled back and forth between relatives and low paying jobs. She moved 3,000 miles to be near her son. Of real interest, her parents stayed at Quartzite back in the 1970’s when she was a little kid. Her dad had a generator and did welding and building for people. How interesting that she would be here as I watch this channel!

Bless you for your help to someone else. My late aunt found a woman sobbing in the restroom in a restaurant. Asking what was wrong the reply was that she had nowhere to go. So my aunt, who lived alone, invited her home and the woman went home with my aunt. Years later when aunt told me this story, she said the woman had stayed six weeks and one day just left. She said that she could have stayed forever. This was a brave thing to do, I think.

Bob - you are such a great guy!! Thank you so much for helping others.
I just wanted to share a tip with all the nomads out there for the wintertime. If you are parked in freezing cold temperatures (first tip is don't LOL) but if you find yourself in a van in the middle of winter, there is no need to carry a dozen thick, heavy blankets with you. Just buy a foil hypothermia bag for about $12 and an arctic rated sleeping bag - check the temperature rating on the sleeping bag to make sure it suits the weather. Make sure you wear a balaclava & a lumberjack's hat too as you have to protect your head & ears while you're sleeping. In a hypothermia bag you will actually sweat when it's freezing outside - they are brilliant and pack right down to take up next to no space. I recently travelled to the Flinders Ranges in South Australia - it was FREEZING. The minute I got in the hypothermia bag & sleeping bag, I was SWEATING like it was the middle of summer...

My daughter & I have just been made homeless by a criminal real estate in Qld - they knew they could get $100 more a week for our old run down rental house if they leased out to Melbournians fleeing Covid lockdown. I have always loved old vintage vans and am lucky enough to own a little beauty from 1959. After the shock of being made homeless I suddenly realised there's no such thing in Australia!!!! Especially for a girl from the Outback. But it's just me & my daughter - I never had family. I love Bob's channel - but one thing I have to say is that YOU'RE NEVER HOMELESS UNDER THE SOUTHERN CROSS. But I've often thought we should start a friendship/campsite group like Bob & his friends have in America...

A friend of mine set up a duraflame tabletop electric faux "fireplace"...fake flame but puts out heat, powered by a halo bolt car jump starter that had an AC outlet on the side of it. It could have powered the faux fireplace for 5 hours, but that sucker put out so much heat, she had to turn it bbn off after 2.

Thank you, Bob, for your opinion about spray foam. I'm currently repairing the front over-the-cab window area in my truck camper that had a leak. The metal is in great shape but the wood, I'll have to replace. Was seriously considering spray foam vs the fiberglass insulation typically used. Thank goodness I listened to your video. Spray foam is no longer a consideration. You have inspired me for years and you do so much for everyone. Thank you for all you do. 🌲❤🐶😻😽❤🌲 PS: I have just installed a tiny wood stove in my truck camper. What a great thing. Enjoying it immensely. I'm in Oregon and the dry heat from the stove is ideal.

I saw my first "Bob" video little more than a year ago and he immediately started me pointing my life towards The Nomad Life. I am a partial Nomad right now. I travel for my job (Healthcare). Have been for almost 4 years. I LOVE IT! I wanted MORE but didn't have a clue. Then by providence I saw Bob. It CLICKED. I'm processing my Life to the permanent Nomad Life. I just ended an assignment in Salt Lake. I drove back East for my next assignment following Route66. Arizona, & New Mexico are incredible. My wife flew out to ride back. It was an incredible trip. I think she got nibbled by "The Nomad Bug".
    Anyway, Thank you Bob

Ive noticed that water bottles full of air that where filled in warm temperatures get crushed by a vaccum when in very cold temperatures during the winter. They expand to normal size when the car heats up. The air in your mattress could be taking up less space when temperatures dip making it seem like its losing air.

Yes, have been forced out of my apartment due to personality disorders prior to and after the beginning of Covid. Am Apartment and HOME FREE, and fighting to start still in my SUV, Solo with dog, from July 6th in heat and fire season, so no fires or flames allowed to the November freeze and December freezing temps with only wool blanket, down comforter, a Power pack, a cell phone and tiny amount of space to thrive. I'm thankful for Mother nature and these few dry sunny days we get to keep my spirits up. Quart side, or bust is still on hold. Am trying to get into a van, so I can stand up and be able to walk instead of squeeze and crawl about, during survival. Warmer and drier weather is to come.

    Wool-
    Wool insulation
Wool blankets .under and over you.
    Wool socks, hats and mittens
    Wool clothing- leggings etc
Stay away from cotton! Hikers say cotton kills- it keeps in the moisture and then the moisture freezes. Acrylic=plastic wrap. Use wool- it doesn’t have to be itchy. It is
Sustainable, anti microbial/fungal, breathable, self regulating temperature, wicks away moisture
I can’t recommend it enough. Last night it was 17 degrees- right now at 2330 it is 29F outside.

Standard air mattress will lose air, or seem to, in cold because air shrinks a bit when cold. When it warms back up the air will expand again. Dont overfill the mattress when the air is cold or it will pop internal supports when it warms back up. A cheap way to keep yourself warm while you save up for a better sleeping pad is to get a silver foil folding windshield reflector. Dollar general sells them for less than 10.00. Get the big one. Remove any suction cups. Slide this under a blanket below you, between you and the air mattress, or foam. You need a blanket beneath you. The reflector will reflect your body heat back up to you.

A thought for insulating a SUV: quilted yardage of material cut to fit headliner, spray adhesive a space blanket to the inward facing surface, and velcro strips or continuous velcro to attach it. Similar panels attached to cardboard for fitting in the windows. You can buy pre-quilted material at craft shops like JoAnne. Added perk is it's all removable. (except maybe the velcro unless you don't fix it permanently. At some point going to try it myself. Recommend covering the whole inside.

Just watched the Nomadland movie . Serious movie, great acting . It does not sugar coat van life. That some of the van life CZcamsrs show in their videos , waking up looking at the ocean thru the backdoors of their van everyday. Anyone thinking of getting into van life and has a choice. Should read the book or watch the movie. The movie shows a hardship, a loneliness, but also friendship and a closeness of van life.

How to keep gray and black water tanks from freezing-we use RV antifreeze. Works well but not 100% of the time. We use the silver bubble wrap insulation from Home Depot for covering the windows at night. We covered one side with black flannel using aluminum tape. The covers attach to the windows with Velcro circles. We hung thermal drapes across the windows and side door. The white vinyl front window cover works well outside, but we still use bubble wrap on the inside plus two quilts hanging across the cab. We’re currently working on skirting to keep wind and cold from going under the vehicle. We used tarps, but it’s time consuming to put them up. We’ve been comfortable in weather down to the teens. The interior stays around 55 degrees with a little buddy heater or a propane furnace. I don’t think it’s safe to sleep with the little buddy on though.

Coroplast has very little R value, other insulation can be covered with it. It is expensive!!!! Collect illegal yard signs like "I BUY HOUSES" . Neat thing, build a shelf unit out of the stuff using the sign wire that runs through the panel, it is easy, think about it the wire goes into two or more pieces for strength. :)

Oh, I happened to remember that there is a heater that can plug into the cigarette lighter. Those can be found at truck stop stores. Since it's an electric heater, it should work well enough if the person can use it without draining the battery. Again, I don't know much about how to rig electric in nomadic vehicles. But those who do, it would prevent them from running out their car battery and they could keep warm. The heater sets in the window and faces out into the car. It's just a small box type thing.

The quality (expensive) diesel heaters are Webasto and Espar. Both Webasto and Espar are German companies.
As far as propane heaters go, Dickinson in Vancouver, BC Canada, makes propane fireplaces that are sealed and do not ad moisture to the space being heated. They use a double wall chimney that exhausts out the inner chimney and draws in outside air for combustion via the outer part of the chimney. They are very safe and use little electricity. They are pricey though ($750 to $900), but for that price you get everything you need for an install except the propane hose and regulator. They are very safe. They have a glass window so you can watch the flame. The P9,000 would heat a van nicey.

The candle and pot does not work. To heat a car you need a 750 watt inverter( minimum) a battery and a 200 W heater. You can also run a heated blanket that will pull another 150 Watts. Also wool socks and a wool blanket on top of sleeping bag for appropriate degrees.

The moisture in the cold coming into the vehicle is from condensation caused by heat inside a cavity that has cold air outside the cavity. There's not really a way to stop it without losing the heat inside the cavity, because moisture comes from the crossing of two different temperates on the vessel. You're best to have as much sun hit the car as possible during the afternoon sun to try to dry some moisture but it won't stop everything. Some moisture is going to be released by two ventilation holes, like an inlet and outlet, ideally one up above and one below; but make it so you can close them up. But to do that your incoming heat would have to compensate for heat loss. This is how beehives work in winter. And if you think about it this way it may help you think of some ideas regarding how to work it. Beekeepers have to know this to not go broke. Talk to some beekeepers about how to adapt this to cars. (I also hope you are careful about not having a woodstove in a van or car near fuel lines or gas tanks...? Possibly needing some heat braking material because of these kinds of issues around any kind of stove adaptation.)
BUT I'm interested in the experiment if you could reduce the condensation by covering the vehicle in tarps during the night, and then taking them off during the day. (Again it wouldn't entirely stop it, but might reduce some of the condensation by the outer layer absorbing some of it.)
    ...
***For increasing heat in the vehicle... one idea that might help for an experiment adaptation is to use the siberian nomads trick. They would put a tent inside a tent and then only heat the inner tent with the middle area being a sort of a buffer zone, and then the super mega cold outside that. This would probably mean hanging like a blanket zone set up sewn together around the bed like a mosquito cage to sleep in, with blankets and bedding in that. (Again you have to have ventilation for this, and keep blankets away from flame.) Keep nylon and vinyl away from flames also. I think this may be one of the most effective things to do! ***

The chemical exhaust of ideal combustion is carbon dioxide and water vapor. That’s the reason any open combustion heater in a vehicle creates condensation.
If you look at the inside of an RV furnace, you’ll see something that looks like a tuba. Combustion air is brought in the small end into a burner, then hot exhaust flows through the larger tubes and out side. Inside air is blown over the ‘tuba’ to exchange the heat to inside the vehicle. The combustion air never mixes with the inside air directly...hence no condensation.
The ideal wood stove would also draw combustion air from outside, burn, and head up and out the flue. The heat is transferred inside by flowing across the stove and outside of the flue.
In other woodstove installations, combustion air is taken from inside the vehicle/cabin, burned, and goes up the flue. If there’s no air brought inside for combustion, wood stoves won’t draft properly.

I'm in Eastern NC, our winters aren't too cold and it usually warms a bit during the day. During the day, we dry with a towel, open the doors and used a leaf blower to help dry walls. Most of you probably aren't traveling with a leaf blower, but I imagine that you would have a fan to use. This may help some of you with similar climates, if you don't have too much stuff and you keep things tied down in the back.
