You’re so real for giving RAYE her own video bestie 🫶🏾
it was a long time coming bestie 🫶🏾
YESSSSSSS!!! THE ALBUM is a MASTERPIECE! not to mention she's a songwriter and can ACTUALLY sing live! SO READY for her PRIME
Yesss!! Total package and I love her pov
Awwww this album means so much to me. I am not kidding when I say that Ice Cream Man really saved my life last fall.
I was able to see her on tour too and never have I seen an artist connect so intimately with their audience. The live band and stage presence is one thing, but we were all glued to her the entire time for her rawness.
NO WAY, THIS ALBUM SAVED MY LIFE AND IT'S TRULY MY FAV ALBUM OF ALL TIME AND SHE IS MY FAV ARTIST OF ALL TIME FOR THAT
I really need to catch her live soon!!
I think Raye is absolutely one to watch! Future icon in the making!
With this album Raye became one of my favourite artists of the 2020's so far. The album is a masterpiece and Escapism has become one of my favourite songs of all time. Her songs feel so real and the songwriting is so amazing and yet so easy and fun to listen to. So excited to see what's next
One of the best debuts of the decade hands down. She deserves Beyoncé-level success.
I’m holding out for Adele levels. Like huge and internationally renowned for her talents but she can also disappear and be human when she wants to
@@ArgoBargo absolutely!
Raye really is that artist, her voice is so unique and calming
The placement of flip a switch in the album is also something that just adds to how good it is.
It following ice cream man, which is an incredibly tough and heartfelt song, with lyrics highlighting how she won't ever "let a man ruin how i walk, how i talk, how i do it", to essentially....flip a switch and make you feel like you're on top of every dirty mf who did you wrong is just 10/10
As you pointed out some critics say that the album not being so "gut punching" as it could have, and the mix of different genres and stories being told makes it feel incohesive. To me it only highlights the story of Raye more, and how she's taken everything dirty done to her and channeled it into something so beautiful, with the different melodies, instrumentations and the genre-bending highlighting the complexities of not only of those situations in themselves, but also how difficult it can be to come out the other side, and reclaim your ownership, power and her ultimate independence
A friend of mine was part of the choir at the royal albert (also at the Brits). I was gassed when I found out she was in it 😭
i fell in love with raye and that album last year it was one of the best piece of work i have EVER heard. so proud of her and ty for making a video about it!
Ghanaians, gather here for our girl RAYE 🇬🇭
AYYYYYYY 🇬🇭🇬🇭🇬🇭🇬🇭
Clock it!!
She is sooooo underrated tbh. I like that she can’t be placed in specific genre. But I do believe she is best at edm. ❤️
not with a voice like that. she was born to sing jazz and blues
I’m actually so grateful to have seen raye do a talk at my sisters art collage that she too attended when she was starting out! I’m so proud of her and hope she achieves even bigger success! She’s just so talented ❤
Yes Raye! The live Royal Albert Hall version is probably my favorite and made me love albums again.
One of the best debuts in recent years!! You should analyze the SOUR era in honor of it being the most streamed female album of all time, I feel like there’s a lot of material when it comes to the marketing and impact it had.
I'm surprised people are shocked she has the most streams. she became an house hold name with DL. that's also the only few songs she had ever released so of course we would listen to it on repeat until she released more music lol. she also released music in the streaming era so there's no competition with her. I do think the marketing was so good and it catered to the right people!
i usually put new videos to my watch later list but as soon as i say naomi and raye i had to stop my cleaning process. great video. genesis is coming
thank you 🫶🏾
She’s one the next Great Music Divas. She’s coming for that throne.
I’m lucky to have known her since like 2016 due to being British! Her genre hopping is mind blowing, from electronically produced songs to orchestra and acoustics. Her advocacy for the rights of songwriters is outstanding!
Loved this analysis so much👏🏾❤️and I would love for you to react to her upcoming single “Genesis” I’m really excited for that song!
Seeing her move from euphoric sad songs to 21st century blues was so cool to see. She always had bluesy moments in her songs but to see her lean fully into blues for rhis album was amazing to see. Love Raye and so happy to see a video on this album ❤
pitchfork just be talking out their ass😭
Brilliant analysis and review. I’m a huge music lover , RAYE’s debut album feels like a concept one. Easily one of my favorites of the last decade. I’m an American who has sent a lot of time in London (especially in the ‘00) when Amy Winehouse and a very young Adele were on heavy rotation with me. She feels similar but artistically different. Here’s to a long and successful career for RAYE.
i think they all went to the same performing arts high school
Top tier album. Can't remember the last time listening to a full album and enjoying it as much as I enjoyed this one
truly album of the year
YESSSSS im so happy you made a video about her
I appreciate how much work you always put into your videos. It's such a delight to listen to you and learn so much about my favorite artists. I knew little to nothing about Raye and this phenomenal album (production and background-wise), so this was super insightful and interesting, especially your approach of diving into it song by song and analyzing them. Thank you
Yay some Raye love 🥳🥳
barely started but i already know this video will give
I just saw her performe in Buenos Aires and she is the most sweet hermosa mujer! I love her so so much! And i dont know if it was conceptual but i think her journey to this album is deep and beautiful
WELL YES!
yesss finally something you’re rocking w lmao! I be stressed for you
I love your coverage of RAYE coz I have loved everything she has ever done, made and said. I am so relieved and immensely proud of her growth and liberation. This album was dope af and you've done a wonderful analysis - thanks Naomi!!!
I adored Raye for years, watching her growing up and struggling since 2016 i think. I thought I knew what she was capable of, but boy how wrong I've been. "Hard Out Here" - this one I placed as a storytelling intro to what she was really going through behind the scene, necessary to share with the audience. then "Black Mascara" which follows the topic, but also brings back dance music, so I thought okay, that is going to be more like a sound she's going for. and then the double single. I fell for "The Thrill Is Gone" after first listen. I haven't even realised at the moment how much I like that kind of music. of course i respected Amy, but it was never really my primary go-to music. and then "Escapism". at first a struggle, because it contains so many different genres and complex storytelling. after a better dive I became obsessed. I was so happy watching how she finally gets the attention she deserved for all this years. and the album came and I was left speechless and after the Orchestral Version I'm not sure if anyone ever can do something quite similar to me emotionally via music.
exactly year later i had the opportunity to finally see her live and she was just so perfect. everything about this album, about this era is just perfect. It was a privilege to watch her grow as an artist and still do.
Please do a video on her EPs before the album was released. I know some people didn't care for the album due to the contemporary sound, but she has a wide range of music. Each EP was a different sound. I've been in love with RAYE's work ever since I, U, Us
Literally went to go listen before watching! And WOW I love her! She’s going to be on repeat!
one of the best albums of all time
love you loveyou love you
🫶🏾🫶🏾🫶🏾
you made me want to give her a listen
I'm here after the MAMOTH that is Genesis.
It's like everything she is as an artist in a way that's more cinematic and ambitious.
still the best album of 2023, yup yup!
I'm so happy she was able to take control of her career after all the struggles with her label. I can't lie, I like a lot her dance hit/collabs back in the beginning of her career.
same, and I honestly didn’t even realize it was the same artist at first
@naomi.cannibal I'm from the UK and the UK along with Europe love dance music. I almost saw Ray back in 2018, for a charity concert.
This is my all time favorite album
I honestly thought that was Amy Winehouse because I watched the Amy Winehouse movie yesterday and that movie was just as bad as Bob Marley: One Love but just simply disrespectful. She would have been a better choice to play Amy than Marisa Abela, who was trying with the material she was given but then again, Raye is mixed race.
Maybe it’s for the better because then she’s not even more in Amy’s “shadow”. But yeah, biopics haven’t really been giving lately
I liked the Bob Marley one
Both Bob and Amy’s stories would have worked as miniseries because they both deserve better biopics than the ones we got. People need to stop being accepting of mediocrity. Both movies also make me want to slap both the filmmakers and the family members who were producers for the respective biopics because you didn't bother to do anything special with their stories.
Love the album
One of the best artists of the decade.
The Amy Winehouse comparisons have always... not quite sat right with me, actually. I understand why, I guess, they both have excellent, evocative voices and a clear love for blues & jazz musical stylings. But to me, RAYE & Amy are two separate artists inspired by the same genres & musicians; they don't necessarily sound like each other. They sound very distinctly & uniquely themselves, but from the same family - siblings, not twins.
She’s bout the art
This is why i now feel like she would've made an amazing Amy Winehouse portrayal in the biopic!
She's obviously an amazing musician, shes been hurt by others who were supposed to be there for her, she's been used etc.
But thats just me
Fun fact: it’s RAYE’s little sister on the album cover.
Can you do one for Halcyon Days or Delirium by Ellie Goulding? :)
She’s an amazing writer and has PIPES hiney
When Megan drops her album can U please do a era analyzed 😂
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
naomi get into the madonna discography!!! her eras are UNMATCHED… so many cool era videos could be made through her music ❤
she’s a genius
9:00 okay, lose the shirt, why dontcha? 🤣👌🏼
The fact that this got No grammy love, not even for Escapism astounds me. They stay losing over there...
hate to be this annoying person but it’s her youngest sister on the album cover, not Abby - Abby however is also known as Absolutely and has supported her on tour she’s great!!
First
Raye is so talented! So proud of her. I saw her open for Sza last year I was so excited and she puts so much effort and energy into her shows. I hope one day I’ll get to see her own full show. She’s one of my fave artists and I’m so happy she’s finally gotten her flowers. Well deserved! 🫶🏽 flip a switch my favourite song from her. Been trying to get tickets for ages and it’s always a miss 😭 maybe one day I’ll finally be able to cop the tickets and see my girl live again
