Hack & Squirt One Year Later

  • In this video I inspect the hack & squirt I performed one year ago in the north woods. Hack and squirt is a method of killing trees while leaving them standing. The reason to leave them standing is to allow them to dry in place to use as firewood at a later date, to provide habitat for bugs, birds, bats and other wildlife, or simply because there is no time to burn a big pile of trees at the moment.

    What's your hack 'n squirt protocol? I've heard 1 hack and 1ml of solution per 3" of diameter.

    • @PlanetMojo
      @PlanetMojo  Pƙed 4 lety +2

      That is what I shoot for, but I kind of play it by ear. Some trees -- especially clonal trees like aspen -- take a bit more. One squirt per cut is supposedly the right dose, but it all depends on the squirt bottle. The one I use is a bit 'challenged' in quantity so I just watch how much is going into the cut. The amount of cuts is also about right, but the type of tree and time of year make a difference. The best time to hack and squirt is mid to late winter. The worst time is Spring or as soon as the tree is coming out of dormancy. Hope that helps! I hack and squirt a 25 foot Sissoo tree almost 2 months ago in my backyard. I don't want it to fall on it's own because it may damage a wall or possible go into a neighbors yard.
    I'd like to wait longer before I have it cut down since money is tight.
    Do you know how long a 25 foot tree will stay standing?

    • @PlanetMojo
      @PlanetMojo  Pƙed 3 lety

      I have no experience with that type of tree, but around here it generally takes a year or so for the tree to die, then a couple of years before the top falls off. I haven't seen one yet fall over from the base but i guess that's possible. Usually they start loosing branches then the top, little by little. Again, I cant say what your tree will do but generally they take awhile and don't just tip over.
