There have been a lot of excellent SummerSlam events over the years. The WWF / WWE like to call the show "The Biggest Party of the Summer" and with the amount of great parties the company has thrown over the years it can be tricky to pick just 1 as the all-time best. Wrestling Bios viewers were tasked with selecting their favourite SummerSlam event of all time to determine which party of the Summer was the greatest, and this video looks at the final results.
Summerslam events that made the cut include SummerSlam 1997 "Hart & Soul" where Bret Hart took on The Undertaker in the main event, Brock Lesnar's tractor and destruction of the ring was enough to give SummerSlam 2022 a place in today's video, the historic Wembley Stadium show from 1992 got ranked pretty high by viewers, and SummerSlam 2000 featuring Steve Blackman vs Shane McMahon and a Rock vs Kurt Angle vs Triple H main event also made it in the top 10.
Thank you to everyone that voted!

Love this guy
I think you spelled EPIC wrong
Factual statement
Factual
Only thing that could make this better is a devastating chinlock
"The British Bulldog is gonna win, whether he wants to or not!"😂 That's actually insightful given his state of mind at the time and how it was going to go.
Haha yeah, that kid booked the match. 😂
They found her!!! There’s an entire Twitter thread with her and the fans…
I love that '92 ended with an IC title match. It was also remarkable that there was a "heel vs. heel" match and two "face vs. face" matches on the same card. It really felt like a shift in booking because those were the kind of matches that WWF usually avoided as they didn't want to split the audience over who to cheer and who to boo, so it was rather remarkable to have so many of those matches.
I believe its the only time the IC title was ever in the main event match (not counting Hogan vs Warrior title vs title).
On the heel Vs heel, the amount of sexual innuendo and pretty much downright blatant sexual moves made during that match that i missed as a 9 year old 😂🙈
SummerSlam '92 is one of my favorite PPVs of all time because it's so unique. I love that they not only held it in a stadium overseas, but gave fans things you would have never seen on any other night.
I love how diverse you are making the topics .
Think you could do an episode based on the ' Manager' aspect of wrestling prior to the Attitude era?
People like Master Fuji, Sherri, Heenan, Cornette, .. Just to name a few of the better ones, but there are also some lesser named ones like Slick, Harvey Finkleman,Sapphire , Lou Albano , just to name a few there also.
Thank you for these as they always give me insight into the shows I remember watching back then and the revelations made between Teenage Me and Adult Me.
Diversity is our strength 🤡
Yeahman that's a good idea
You've got the greatest manager of all time, Bobby the brain Heenan.
I second this idea
Harvey Wippleman?
Summerslam ‘01 was probably what The Invasion PPV should’ve been. A tremendous PPV.
I agree
Summerslam 2002 by far had the best roster of talent that the WWE had seen. From top to bottom the card had either upper mid card to main event talent through out it.
wcw had a far superior roster with the likes of ho-gan, big nash, big scott hall, and others!
@@henry7696 No they had WWF left overs and that showed only a few years later.
Summerslam 91 absolutely cemented Curt Hennig as my all time favourite wrestler and it still holds today. In my mind, no one can touch him
And he was nowhere near his best in that match either. He was special.
@dewiwilliams4821 Yep, he was in severe pain with his back but you could hardly tell
@ianpilkington2037 Yeah I watched it again last week funnily enough. You can tell when you know about it but back in the day I couldn't tell. That's true talent and heart. I am sure that the fact it was Bret he was in the ring with made it easier for him too and I loved the match they had at KOTR semi finals in 93 too. They were magic together.
Perfect!
Summerslam 2002 was legendary you saw the in ring return of HBK after 4 years taking on HHH in an Unsantioned match proving even with ring rust could still have a banger and that promo package was perfect,The crowning of Brock as a main eventer and the crowd forcing Rock into Hollywood Rock plus Angle and Mysterio having one of the greatest openers ever
Benoit Vs rvd
Summerslam 2002 wasn't Shawn's first match back he was wrestling in texas in 2000 and 2001
@@GamingNewsIn60 OP clearly meant In ring WWE return. Matches on the Indy's or in his own promotion don't count.
Brock - Rock was a great one.
Great PPV but Lawler's ott commentary on the HHH v HBK match makes it unwatchable for me without a mute button.
Summerslam 88 91 92 and 94 were always my favorites
I was a huge wrestling fan in the 80s as a kid. I entered high school in 1990 and I pretty much checked out of watching after WM6. I didn't come back to wrestling until 1999. So I missed the entire "New Generation" era and the entire run of Shawn Micheals as a top guy.
When people at the time were calling Michaels one of the GOATs I didn't get it. In my brain he was still the tag team guy.
But at about two minutes in to his return match with HHH, I was like "OH NOW I GET IT! “ By the time he did the loading up his boot stomp I was eating it up. Absolutely spectacular match.
I remember a hot summers day, I had watched the raw before summerslam with my Dad, then we went to my Nan’s house for a bbq, and I was running around singing “highway to hell” because it was played so much on the lead up to summerslam 98, what a year 98 was 🥰🥰🥰🥰
That's a funny story. What a funny story 😂
Yeah that Summerslam PPV, was one of the most promoted PPV’s of all time. Well they kind of had to do it, because WCW was kicking their ass. This time period in WWE was so so. The same wrestlers wrestled each other over and over again. WWE only had like 5 top talent guys at that point and WCW it ran properly could of ended WWF
I love Summerslam 2000. Definitely was my favorite. Everything on the card just worked for me. And my most memorable Steve Muthafuggin' Blackman moment with that fall off the entrance.
The only downside I have to it, and really the only one, is kind of its legacy. TLC made a lot of of sense. The Hardy Boyz were doing ladder matches and attacks up to it. Edge and Christian where doing the "Conchairtos" and Pilmanizing people with chairs up to it. And the Dudleys were getting tables. With the heated up feud, it made 100% sense as a match type.
And every TLC I've seen after that basically has no build up and was just "... well people like TLC matches...". To the point where we have a PPV named after it, forcing the content with no context.
Also a great E&C promo the day after on RAW with the midgets breaking out the pre-schooler toy furniture.
If you factor in WCW's PPVs, you could make the argument that 1992 was the greatest summer for wrestling PPVs ever: WCW Beach Blast 92, WCW Great American Bash 92, WWF Summerslam 92
All three excellent PPVs don't forget the Royal Rumble as well
Throw Wrestlewar 92 in there as well
@@jimmylarson7856 another beloved favorite of mine and the only PPV I have on home-recorded VHS. But that was before the summer (as was the Royal Rumble)
@@jimmylarson7856 yes that was awesome too
I was at that Royal Rumble in 92. I had 4th row seats and was only 6 years old… lol
Summerslam 91, a rare wrestling wedding where the ceremony itself doesn't get wrecked.
Right.
@@KevinPayton-fq8gd But the wedding reception does get wrecked by Jake the Snake and the Undertaker.
Not related to the video but more to the channel. Anyone that watched Money In The Bank from London. There was a nod to Davey Boy Smith Chinlock. There was a Chinlock on top of the ladder in London.
SummerSlam 90 was always my personal favourite. The whole vibe and atmosphere in the Philly Spectrum was awesome. Tornado beating Perfect, Rockers getting destroyed, Hogan coming back for Earthquake, Warrior and Rude in the cage and for my money one of the greatest tag team matches ever Hart Foundation vs Demolition 2 out of 3 falls. Yeah pure memories for me. Loved it
Yes This Is My Favorite Summerslam When The Hart Foundation Beat Demolition!!!
Summerslam 2002 is my favorite and always will be I turned 10 years old that summer and I’ll never forget it
Facts I was 6… Every match was🔥🔥 Still got the vcr tape lol
@@KingMack-oh3yq cool
SummerSlam 2002 HAD to be #1.
It's the crowning of The Next Big Thing. Hands down!
SummerSlam 1997 is and will always be my favorite SummerSlam. Seeing Bret Hart win his 5th WWF Championship was a memory I’ll hold onto forever. All of my friends at school hated Bret after he turned heel. I had so much fun rubbing Bret’s win in their faces..until November.
Me too!
Wrestling Bios uploading on a holiday further makes this a holiday.
First summerslam match I ever saw was Austin vs Taker.. however, Austin vs Angle is what hooked me as a fan..a now I'm doing it
I love the old blue, orange and yellow Summerslam ring apron
2000 will always be my favorite PPV of all time. I’m biased since I was there live, but it holds up. Can’t wait for it to be covered on Reliving the War.
I always get reminded just how long the War went on for. The 2000s will give us some incredible videos, were WWF hit unstoppable heights and WCW..
TLC match was awesome
SummerSlam in 2000 is my favorite. The TLC match with the Hardys, Dudleys and Edge & Christian is my favorite match of that event. The triple threat WWF title match is also great.
I just love this channel. You are a fantastic archivist. Bret vs Davey is my fave Summerslam match.
Summer slam 98 is the show that got me hooked on wrestling, when I was a kid my parents had the "illegal" cable box that had the ppv channels and I was just trying to watch something on TV and decided to see what movies were on the ppv channel and I stumbled onto this ppv....the rest was history lol I was 10😊 I also stumbled onto a few other things if you know what I mean.....lol having the illegal cable box as a kid was awsome cz after 10 o'clock one of the ppv channels turned into....well....you kno lol the corn channel😂😂😂
the AC/DC involvement in Summerslam 1998 was not simply removed from streaming services, but from EVERY official release of the event, but even the first-run VHS tapes were missing it as well, even though they still had the DX Band and Insane Clown Posse live performances.
Licensed music costs a lot of money. WWF only bought the rights to use it for the summer of 1998.
@@catchcan221 Yet, this was the only case where that ever seemed to apply (except in instances where WWE and the band in question had some kind of falling out).
Another awesome upload from the channel with the most jam on the planet!
My favourite Summerslam ever has to be Summerslam 95. Such a stacked card. With Issac Yankem VS Bret Hart and the 5 star mat classic of Diesel VS Mabel headlining the show.
I agree. Shawn/Razor 2 puts every TLC match to shame.
Bret v Mr perfect at 91 is almost definitely my favourite match of all time. It blew my socks off watching it live back in the day.
Bret was such a great talent. He’s my all time favorite wrestler. Another good match was when he wrestled Owen at WM 10
I watched the Summerslam 88 vhs so much. One day my dad was looking after me (about 6 at the time) and we were play fighting with it on in the background. I went to the toilet then heard the ultimate warriors theme play so i ran back into the living room while he was distracted watching the TV i jumped and accidentally broke two of his ribs.
However Summerslam 91 will always be my favorite i loved The Mountie being arrested and taken away.
Man 2002 was wild I remember that's when you'd have to get to the bar 2 hrs early for a seat and it would be an insane madhouse for the show.
This show was the height of that..
It's really insane to think of the insane legendary match ups we got in this one..
It Remember feeling like we were in a arena people were so hyped and into the matches.
I'm glad Summerslam 91 made the list, the first a match that made me a wrestling fan was Bret Hart VS Mr. Perfect at Summerslam, and in adulthood learning what Curt Hennig went through to pull this match off makes it just that much more special.
Even as a young lad in the UK, that match just carried a reputation that lived up to its plaudits. Bret and Curt were just something else in that ring together
The Hart v. Hennig match in 1991 was up there with Savage v. Steamboat at Wrestlemania 3.
Not watched the video yet but straight away summerslam 91 and 92 was top of my list
Not many people may agree but the six man tag at the beginning was really decent too
For me personally the greatest SummerSlam was 97.. Maybe because i was there live and how epic the main event was, especially the finish of that match
Great video Ryan. I was at SummerSlam 88 and SummerSlam 91 and it's good to see these summer slams make the top 10.
My Top 3:
2002 - Return of HBK and the first and only Rock vs. Brock - all the matches are actually good!
2013 - CM Punk vs. Brock and Daniel Bryan vs. Cena (w/ the HHH heel turn and Orton MITB cash in)
1997 - HHH vs. Mankind and Taker vs. Bret - also it's an essential watch for understanding the origins of the Attitude Era (and Stone Cold's rise/fall)
Also 2005 was underrated: Hogan vs. HBK (despite the foolishness)/Edge vs. Matt Hardy/Eddie vs. Rey/ Cena's and Batista's dominance.
Bret has always been my favorite so when i became an indy guy, i studied his and others like him to build my in ring moves
Great video as always. I was wondering if you're ever planning on focusing a bit on ECW as well?
The tag team turmoil match at SummerSlam '99 is one of my favorite matches. It's still funny to hear Jerry Lawler say that nobody cares about the football careers of wrestlers. Jim Ross responds with nobody cares about your mayoral campaign either.
From 1993-1998 I talked my parents into buying a ton of WWF ppvs. The only ones I would never see were Summerslam because we would be on vacation. Summerslam 2002 was the first summerslam I ever purchased for myself and also the first one I watched online. I remember moving into my college dorm and going over to my gf's room because her Dell was already set up and "streaming it" It buffered like crazy but I remember being so impressed that it was possible in 2002. I purchased it for the HBK comeback.
These are great!
Thanks Wrestling Bios!
I'm from Belfast and absolutely loving your work sir!! Fantastic channel and content
I'm surprised that SumerSlam 97 was only #5 on this list, however I'm more shocked that it didn't even make the list on Cagematch. I think this mainevent was brilliant to what it led to up later on in 1997 for all involved.
Jake the Snake Roberts terrorizing the after wedding party has a lot to do with why people remember this fondly.😂😂😂
Another amazing video. The music, video editing, stills, narration are all top notch. You should be employed by AEW or WWE. I don't know how you have the time. Looking forward to the next one.
To this day I still think it was a huge missed opportunity that Bret didn't have a big heelish grin on his face as his arch-nemesis was forced to make the three count that made him 5 time WWF champion, especially after spitting in his face.
Bret Hart is Mr. SummerSlam.
Summerslam 89 holds a special spot for me.. Zues best villain since Andre at that time
Me too
It's funny how Rock vs Hogan overshadowed HHH vs Jericho in that years Wrestlemania, but by the time Sumer Slam came around HHH vs HBK overshadowed Rock vs Brock. In my opinion!
I was at SS 97’ as a kid-one of my favorite shows for sure.
You kinda make me want to create a twitter account just so I could vote on these.. you’re videos are brilliant, thank you for the information and the entertainment
Love your work mate! ❤
From Australia 🇦🇺
As always your the man I'd be lost without your channel
For your Next Character Bio you should Do Either New Jack, Brian Pillman, or Terry Funk.
Definitely new Jack lol
Me Too!
The Match Made in Heaven...and the Match Made in Hell. Those vignettes and promos always stuck with me
I attended Summerslam 3 times 1998, 2002 & 2015. 2002 was the best WWE ppv I’ve ever seen the entire show was fantastic the crowd was alive that night it was the only WWE show i went to with my dad he’s not the biggest wrestling fan but he had a great time which he thought he’d be bored.
Nice! Let’s get a Jarrett thumbnail on reliving the war!
Summer Slam 92 will always be my favorite. Love the venue and the roster. One of my favorite summer slam matches in general was the Bret hart Vs own hart cage match along with the Bret Vs perfect IC title match
Yes! 2002 was the right choice! So many memories of that one. I was so happy to see HBK back and for Brock to get the belt!
Got to be SummerSlam 1992 for me as personally it was my first summerslam I seen.
Greatest channel u always entertain us brings as always wrestling bios x
Your work is unmatched. Thank you.
Michael Thomas volley from the 1992 Cup Final - good work! 👍😁
I absolutely love your content
Enjoyed this. Good video dude.
Do the Top Royal Rumbles and Survivor Series next!
Summerslam 92 is a perfect illustration of how a hot crowd can make an average show seem like a classic.
I feel like Summerslam 1992 was either the last Golden Era pay-per-view or the first New Generation Era pay-per-view. It felt like a transition of eras at this show.
I sometimes think how even more awesome the attitude era would’ve been if the Bret the Jam-man Hart came back. He’s so good in the ring and his talents were wasted in WCW
The outcome of the Hart-Taker match is bonkers!
The earliest I have clicked on a Wrestling Bios video.
23 minutes.
Another great video in the shelf. Let's go!
20:35 as soon as the summer of 2002 hit, the year became one of WWE's best in terms of in-ring work. The 2002 version of Summerslam and Survivor Series are some of the greatest editions
SummerSlam 2002 is WWE's Best PPV of all Time
And WM X7
People talk about the match made in heaven with randy and Elizabeth as very beautiful but that happened at the worst time in their relationship. During that time they were going through a divorce. Imagine the person you are divorcing behind the scenes you are marrying on screen. That had to be so hard for both of them to do. Also shows though what professionals they both are because no one knew or could tell that backstage their relationship was in shambles.
@15:36
Those 3 cut matches got broadcast on September episodes of Prime Time Wrestling with the McMahon/Heenan commentary kept intact.
I lived in a new city (Montreal) in 2002, and I pondered for a week, until literally the last hour on whether or not I would take public transportation to a movie theatre to watch SummerSlam 2002. Then I finally decided "Shawn Michaels is returning. I AM GOING". Dear god, I am glad I did. One of my favorite shows EVER!
2002 is my favorite with Michael's vs Triple H being my favorite match at a summerslam event
Summerslam 2005 not being here is somewhat shocking to me. I loved that show as a kid even with the absurdity of the matches
Awesome video great list, makes me want to go back and watch some of them, and makes me super pissed i sold my wrestlemania, summerslam and royal rumble dvd box sets 😢 regret.
I have always thought Bret dud amazing doing the match himself in a way love ur content keep up the amazing vids
Yes 2002 was the absolute best SummerSlam. I'm a golden era and new generation fan, but '02 was great top to bottom
It's kinda amazing that of the six participants of the TLC matches, five of the six are still wrestling at least part time.
My favourite claim(s) from SummerSlam 92 that I didn't have any need to question as a 9 year old was Virgil being a close personal friend of Big BossMan. Furthering this during Virgil's match with Nailz with McMahon saying Virgil was a great street fighter after again mentioning his friendship with Big BossMan. A crooked nasty white southern cop from the late 80's who had a close personal friendship with an African-American street fighter from the same period. 😂😂😂
Your videos never disappoint! Thank you! I’m on December 2002 on the wwe network and I really enjoyed summerslam 02 but my choice was 2000.
To be fair 2000-02 was the best 3 year run for Summerslam.
@@stingersplash overall good time for wwe!
Summerslam 2000 is definitely in my top 5 if not top 3. 1997 is only good to me for the hart taker match tho so it wouldn’t be in mine. 2000, 2002, 2003, 2001, 98, 91 are definitely all some of my favorites modern times 2022 was good and the one with Daniel Bryan vs Cena. I typically forget a lot of modern Summerslams
"Miss Elizabeth, will you marry me? - "Oh yeah."
😭 I got something in my eye.
15:30 pure cheek!😂
Man I chose a prime time to be a wrestling fan.
1996-2002
What a time man, what a time!!
I've missed out on these polls where are they posted cause I'd love cast my vote in future
Very good list. My one complaint about Summerslam 2002: Booker T and Goldust didn't win the Tag Team titles.
Summerslam 2001 was my favorite. I had it on DVD and watched it on replay, even after i got the WWE network, i watched it again and again. They just dont do matches like that anymore. RVD vs Jeff Hardy was awesome. 2 ladder match specialists putting on a great match for a hardcore title that mainly was a gimmick title. Those 2 guys definitely made the hardcore title more meaningful.
Waiting for this announcement!
I voted for Summerslam 2022!!!😊 Thanks Wrestling bios!❤👍 You're a jam-up guy!
All of these were fun in their own way. Thanks for sharing.
“British Bulldog is gonna win, whether he wants to or not” glad that girl has all the bases covered
I think one big difference between polling viewers vs. cagematch is that your poll is ranking them or at least ranking them by how many people voted for a particular Summer Slam while actively deciding which one is best. Cage Match is more people giving their thought about each individual event. So maybe you think 2000's show was great and give it 5 stars. And maybe you also think the 2001 event was fantastic and give it 5 stars. Same ranking. But if you say "which was better 2000 or 2001" you'll get a different result. Basically, asking people "which one is best" gives better results than "rate this specific show and tally up the results for each year"
A 4th of July addition..got damn this channel kicks ass
Very good list all those deserve the top 10
Underrated choice for me was SummerSlam 2009
Jeff Hardy vs CM Punk in a TLC match with Undertaker returning was a great way to end the show.
Rey Mysterio & Dolph Ziggler put on a great opener for the IC title
DX vs The Legacy I thought was good and DX entrance was a fantastic entrance
I also laughed for Christian beating William Regal in 8 seconds. Was always a big fan of Christian liked what he did in WWECW
and even though it was less than 3 minutes I liked The Jeri-Show vs Cryme Tyme match for the tag titles still blows my mind how Shad & JTG never won the belts.
Warrior/Savage was a great match; it's the ending that undermines it. But I agree overall, 92 has a lot of "dead spots" in terms of wrestling quality.
People who voted for '92 were voting for Bret-Bulldog, not the whole card.
A Starrcade list would be very interesting. I don't remember any other WCW events well enough to vote on them, and most of them also went through name changes.
