There are two main situations where you DO NOT heckle the performer, a comedian and a magician. They both can make you the fool or an a$$hole, it's the "dealers choice".

I spoke to a comedian once and he I asked him how he deals with hecklers, he says there's usually one of two ways of doing this you can either play with them and toy with them and then destroy them, or just destroy them right off the get-go. This guy chose the play them out and then destroy them.
I love it when they toy with them. There is nothing funnier than when a comedian lures a heckler into a trap and they're too oblivious to realize what's happening until it's too late. It's honestly one of my favorite things in standup comedy.

Dude, beautiful social analytics and pin point play by play breakdown of exactly what's going on during and after and this talented performer who has a very high comedic and self awareness I.Q. in a potentially high frought situation that had the potential to go sideways ten different ways to Sunday. The great ones take a degree of difficulty by a hundred thousand percent volatile situation and flip the script and make it look easy. Once an audience knows their in good hands, a rush of calm sweeps over a crowd. Because when a heckler rears their ugly head, those first few seconds are intense before the moment of truth before the make or break moment if and when the comedian can do the near impossible task of making spur of the moment snappy comeback to get the power back AND restore order at the same time. It's a freaking high wire act and an amazing gift comedians have to pull this razor's edge walk off. All the props and respect. And to you breaking it all down perfectly what's going down in minute detail, but in simple to gestate comprehensible dialogue. Also a gift from the gods.

I've actually never been heckled on stage, but as you can see on some of my videos, jokes I tell that make fun of feminism or female hypocrisy rarely go over well with the ladies. They make them turn on me a bit. I can sense it.
I was at a comedy shop and my girlfriend was brushing peanut shells out of my lap. I spent 5 minutes being the brunt of handjob jokes. It was GREAT. Never laughed so hard.

What you said about Comedy is what I have been telling people for decades. Comedy helps us to understand important issues better by taking the hypocrisy out of play. Comedy is the safety valve that keeps us from thinking that our point of view is the only point of view because it demonstrates the short comings of all positions. Lets have some compromise and know that all positions fall short of perfection. Jokes are better better for us than physical violence.

i was at comedy club back in the 80's and the comedian picked out my wife and I to have a few laughs. I took part in the joke, didn't want to get into it with a pro. Dude was very funny. I wanted to watch his act, not be part of it.
As I see it, picking someone in the audience and having a go at him or her is the lowest, cheapest and most unfair way to achieve some laughs. First of all, in most of those cases, the comedian is actually insulting people. If he creates some form of dialogue, asking you things and then doing something with your answer, _without directly insulting you,_ then no problemo, go for it. _One_ joke about someones appearance, mkay. But _insulting_ someone in your audience? Cheap. Any comedien doing this is not a very good comedien as I see it.
Also, if a comedien is doing this, then you can _bet_ that he will expect this person not being able to to pay back in kind. They know very well that most people don't have the tools to stand their ground in a situation like this and fight fire with fire. Usually all one can do is to smile and act along, because otherwise, you would look like a killjoy.
Which _also_ is unfair and a way of playing it safe, because the comedien knows, if this does not work as intented, his target/victim will have to bear the blame, because apparently, it is a spoilsport.
I have seen a comedien being downright mean and cruel to a young man once, making fun out of his appearance, especially about a scar he had in his face. He would not let it go for painfully long minutes, bringing this young man on the verge of crying. To then make fun of _that._ This was when my autism took over (us Aspies often have a very strong sense of justice) and made me throw things at this a*hole, yelling at him that he should pick opponents, not victims, that he is cruel and not funny at all (although people seemed to find this crap funny) and that he looks and talks like crap himself and then starting to make fun out of his looks and the way he walked, talked, held the mic, sweated in the limelight, coughed, sipped on his water...
To be honest, I was completely in my own world, I did not want to achieve laughs. I was on autistic auto-pilot and I guess I was _mean._ And he could not even say something against it, because actually, I was not meaner than he was towards this youg man. I just kind of... overran this guy. And when I finally cooled down and my focus began to widen again, he was not only just standing there almost in tears himself, the crowd was basically lying on their tables, gasping for air. And to this very day, I don't understand what was so funny about the things I've said (or yelled).
But then again, I am the guy who had his class in tears of laughter once when he read Andersen's 'The Little Match Girl' at a christmas celebration once, despite this being _definitely not_ what I tried to achieve.
