      I'm still have a hard time accepting this, we finally found a Tom Petty song we love? My one daughter watching silence of the lambs with me and my wife her first time seeing that. She was maybe 15. We all know this movie is intense but Tori was mature. One part the girl who is kidnapped who ends up in the house in the well well before she gets kidnapped she's driving and singing Tom's American Girl. My daughter stops the DVD and goes who's singing this,it's great. First time she heard that but she knew , like we all did. More than I can say for these 2 guys. They are pretenders. Sure some they never heard. But. TP. NAH don't believe it. Unless they were Amish

    Refugee is still my favorite Tom Petty song just because I love it musically, but also, it's the first one that really resonated with me. It came out when I was in high school and I had one of those ubiquitous clock radios that you could set the alarm to wake you up with whatever radio station you set it to. So sometimes I would set it to pop music stations that I mostly hated because that actually did a better job at waking me up, but for some reason, I had it set to a favorite rock station, and I came up out of my dreams very groggy and sleepy to this song. And it immediately wormed its way into my consciousness and I have loved it so much ever since. I went out and bought the Damn The Torpedos Album the very next day.

    Awesome reaction!! Andy and Alex, I was hoping this TP song would make you a fan. That's Mike Campbell wailing on the guitar. Tom Petty exceeds as a singer/songwriter, musician and frontman, and the whole "Damn The Torpedoes" album is amazing. You still must react to his earlier stuff, like "American Girl"and "Breakdown", the latter being the banger. He'd love you saying he sounded like Bob Dylan. They worked together and were admirers of one another. Cheers!💛

    Remember, Tom Petty was an artist that was getting radio airplay after three consecutive years of non-stop disco. Rockers were starved for some solid rock n’ roll and Petty delivered. Probably explains some of the devotion his long-time fans have.

    i fell in love with tom petty in 1976, although it was a one-sided relationship. still, played "tom petty and the heartbreakers" until i wore the grooves out. "american girl" hit me. and, later on in his career -- much later -- came "i won't back down" and it reminded me of my old love for him.
    tip: check out the traveling wilburys, and you will learn just how much tom's voice sounds like bob dylan's. and how they each sound separately, together. plus one or two other musicians of middling fame and accomplishment. starter song: "handle with care."

    @Andy & Alex:
    This was definitely the *first* Tom Petty song you should have listened to. It's the first one _anyone_ heard, being his first big hit and a staple of rock radio. _Such_ a banger. Glad you finally got to it.
    I forget what-all y'all have already done of his, except for what you mentioned here. So forgive me if I mention something you've covered.
    For lyrical brilliance in the Bob Dylan mode, *"American Girl"* is my go-to. ("Well, she was an American girl / Raised on promises ..." and it just keeps getting bettter.)
    *"Breakdown"* has a _swing_ to it that's just so catchy, and the lyrics have such _swagger_ ("I'm not afraid of you running away, honey / I get the feeling you won't") - if I had a make-out playlist, this would be on it.
    *"Here Comes My Girl"* is a nice, sweet romantic song for that playlist - probably earlier in the order.
    OTOH, *"You Got Lucky"* has a bit _too much swagger_ - this one belongs on the _f u b*_ playlist, for the ex.
    That one would occur, in terms of soundtrack-of-life, after *"Don't Do Me Like That"* and (already covered here) "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around".
