I understand. When his song "I Won't Back Down" came out I felt like I was actually standing up at the gates of hell, and when things were at their worst I sang that song and reminded myself to stand my ground and to keep this world from dragging me down. It helped me weather whichever adversity was thrown at me.

Brad nailed the meaning on this one. Lex got that impression DOWN though. The whole Tom Petty catalogue is like a slice of quintessential Americana for me. Just encapsulates young, working/middle class life. Was lucky enough to catch him live once about 40 years ago. Personal faves by him are You Wreck Me, or I Need To Know. Great uptempo tracks✌

I’m 26 years old, but I kind of grew up around classic rock. I had never been a big Tom Petty fan though. Then I went to Bonnaroo 2018. It was less than a year since his passing, so a group of musicians performing at the festival got together for the “Tom Petty Superjam”. This included Sheryl Crow, Hayley Williams of Paramore, Matt Schultz of Cage the Elephant, and countless more. They played a bunch of Tom Petty songs, and I fell in love with his music. I will admit I was on a bit of LSD that night, but I haven’t enjoyed his music any less since that night. I’ll never forget getting that joint passed to me during “You Don’t Know How It Feels”. R.I.P. Tom Petty. I wish I had loved your music earlier, but I’m glad I love it now

Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers had a 40-year recording career. Plus his solo stuff, his work with Mudcrutch, the Traveling Wilburys, and guest appearances on other people's albums. There's a LOT to choose from, and his musical style is pretty varied. It's a deep rabbit hole. My all-time favourite artist. This song was from their third album, which propelled them to stardom. For something different from this but really great, try something from the other end of his career - like Fault Lines, from their last album.

Yes that's how he sings - with slight variations over the years, but always with a little muddle "Bob Dylan" like sound in his voice.

Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers have some great ones - he has one of those original voices, like a true rock-n-roll voice. I always liked, "Don't Do Me Like That", "Here Comes My Girl" and "The Waiting is the Hardest Part". His songs have been featured in movies like The Silence of the Lambs ("American Girl") and Jerry McGuire ("Free Falling"). Love your reactions!

Tom was one of a kind.
Try American Girl or Listen to her heart.

I grew up listening to Tom. Many of the songs he wrote were love songs. Raw and emotional. I played A Woman in Love, off his Hard promises album for my junior humanities class, and the music teacher clearly had no appreciation for his talent.

As I recall, "Don't Do Me Like That" was the first song on the radio by Petty, but it came and went quickly. Then this song came out and got a ton of play, which revived interest in the previous song. And that pushed this album ("Damn the Torpedoes"), and the rest is history.

I remember first hearing him in the 70s but he really blew up in the 80s. In fact, he's one of those artists that I can safely say helped to make the 80s. Some of his videos were also some of the best in the 80s - "Great Wide Open" with Johnny Depp in it! "Running Down a Dream" with that trippy pencil-style animation! "Don't Come Around Here No More" with the Alice in Wonderland theme! MUST - DO - MORE - PETTY! :D

Tom Petty is one of those artists that I feel I ought to have got into earlier in my life. I remember being on holiday on the Isle of Skye in Scotland with my Dad and we played the album Full Moon Fever in the car. I thought it was great! Then just a few weeks after getting into Petty's music, news broke about his death and I was heartbroken. He seemed like such a great guy and very dedicated to his fans. He was also in the supergroup (that I also recommend) The Traveling Wilburys, alongside George Harrison from the Beatles, Jeff Lynn from ELO, plus Roy Orbison and Bob Dylan. What a lineup!

Edit - You nailed it Brad.
"Somewhere, somehow, somebody must have kicked you around some... "
The girl he's talking to has been in a bad relationship, and he's trying to help make her feel more comfortable.
He wants her to just be herself around him, and not worry about what she thinks he wants, or to feel like she has to walk on egg-shells around him.

Tom Petty was a great fan of Bob Dylan, as were many musicians that he influenced from the 1960s onwards. Dylan led the field with the Beatles and the Stones. This is Tom in best Dylan "feline " voice. That Dylan sneer comes across well here on this track and the guitar /organ sound is pure 1960s Dylan. Dylan was to take Tom and the whole band on tour as his backing band later on . They became friends and later formed the Travelling Wilburys with Roy Orbison and Beatle George Harrison...also a long-time Dylan friend. This was a fun project for them all.Three of the members are sadly gone leaving only Dylan ploughing his very unique , ever -changing furrow.

  • @stevedahlberg8680
    @stevedahlberg8680 Pƙed 2 lety +1

Vocally he was influenced by Bob Dylan and in fact he even opened for Bob Dylan on at least one tour. But no he sings like this on all his stuff and once you get used to it, it's wonderful it is distinctly him and he has this huge catalog of all great songs. There is a local Tom Petty cover band called Heavy Petty and literally they can play for 2 hours and never repeat a song.
I was in high school when this dropped and I can distinctly remember the first time I heard it. It was playing on my clock radio when it woke me up out of a deep sleep to start getting ready for school and I was like, oh man, what the hell is this? This is fascinating. The message to me has always been that we all get kicked around some at some point and some people let it get to them and get trapped in a cycle of whether it's drugs or bad behavior or bad relationships or just not doing what they need to do to get off their feet and make forward progress. Everybody has to fight to be free.

Saw him open for Dylan in L.A. Phenomenal artist and band. Annie Lennox & Dave Stewart walked out to help close the concert
Dylan, Petty & the Eurythmics performing all on one stage was incredible! Later, saw Petty as the headliner in San Antonio with Dylan’s son as the opening act (The Wallflowers). 6 degrees of separation.
