    Adam reviews the new book from his friend Derek DelGaudio--Amoralman. Derek's book, along with his show and movie In and Of Itself, feed right into Adam's lifelong fascination with the stories of famous pool hustlers and card sharps. Adam also gives some recommendations for some of his favorite books about the world of professional grifters and how they operate.

    I submit for discussion, Adam himself is a type of hustler. Watch any of his videos, especially some of the more recent ones, where he makes comments like "I don't have to be that precise with this cut/hole/alignment because this is just a rough build." At which point he proceeds to make something that would make a manufacturer's quality control manager weep at the beauty.
    I'm not sure if he's hustling us or himself, but it's a classic demonstration of the hustle: "well, I like doing this, but I'm not always that great" and then shows to be one of the maestros.

    I didn't hang out with hustlers as a kid, I hanged out with old men playing golf on an 8 legged snooker table on Sunday mornings. I didn't get to play but I could watch or warm up anyone who showed up late, waiting for the next game.
    Edit: Location was Grand Central Bowl in Portland OR during the late '80s.

    Adam's reasoning for why he watches gymnastics or is interested in pool hustlers is exactly the reason I watch his videos (and the rest of Tested). It amazes that there are people like Adam out there who can understand how to turn a pile of raw materials into an object they have coveted with such precision.

      Listening on my phone, I don't hear it. In some previous videos, there would be something humming in the background, and the noise cancelling would get rid of it unless Adam was speaking. The result was this weird buzzing\humming whenever he spoke.

      @Anticleric Před 3 lety +1

      @@ReverendTed I don't think that'd what it was in this case. Give it a listen with headphones. I'm thinking maybe the mic was on a spring loaded arm or something and the vibration of the spring was being picked up on he mic. The harmonics change based on the volume of his last word.

    Card sharp is preferred in British English, while card shark is more common in American, Canadian, and Australian English. They share their main definitions-namely, (1) a professional card player, (2) a person who is skilled in card games, and (3) a person who is skilled in cheating at card games.

    Billiards is a sport, a puzzle (geometry, physics, psychological, etc...), and just a great game for one to many, regardless of prowess. I'd love to know more about the history of the pool table in "Adam's Cave" (I think it's a Brunswick "Gold Crown"...not sure of the year) but it is a beautiful table. My table is an 8 foot with a single piece slate and I really enjoy it. I am still looking for a complete solution to lift the 1/24 scale slot car track (8 foot by 16 foot) (off from the pool table) so that 'with the flick of switch', people can play pool or race slot cars. I know space is always a concern (and a valuable commodity for makers). Has Adam ever thought about vertical storage above the pool table?
    Great content as always. Thank you :)
    I miss the Bay Area so much...there used to be a great German restaurant called "Speckman's", Italian place called "Trattoria Contadina" (Union and Mason), and I really enjoyed the Carnelian Room (top of the B of A building)...oh what I would give for a piece of 'real' fresh toasted sourdough...
    Be safe and have fun!
    Cheers,
    Jeff (Garage Maker Guy)

    I grew up with a beat up pool table in too tight a basement. I learned to unscrew sections of a portable cue so I could make shots in tight corners. Never disciplined enough to be good. My mother shot pool between loads of laundry.

  • @j4k3z
    @j4k3z Před 3 lety

    Grew up playing on a Minnesota Fats table. So much to say. Irresponsibly enough, I want to say, some of the greatest years of my life, and best pool playing, was spent rolling on the drug Molly and hanging out at the local pool hall every night.
    It is INSANE how much an upper (Methylone to be specific) can up your pool game. I mean, me and my brother would be up all night blasting dub/trapstep running rack after rack to the point where we would literally dance around the table nailing 'air-massè' shots (all shots done without touching the table) with ease. And also at some point I became able to tell if someone was a hair off on their aim for a shot without even being in line with it visually, I could be off to the side across the room even and still at least 90% of the time tell if they were going to make it or not (the other 10%, they probably adjusted slightly at the last second ;P)
    With that said, and as much as it would seem like pool would be a perfect contender for something that could be mastered by a book or mathematics, I think there are just far too many variables involved. My brother and I at one point had the clearest realization that being good at pool (i hate that phrase but how else do you say it? Haha) is almost entirely based on this: past shots experienced + mentally visualizing your shot going in (confident you can do it). Those are the 2 most essential components by far to be really great at it.

    There are many aspects of being a conman. Adam touched on the main one and that is them getting us to gain trust in them or confidence in them. The other aspect is that a conman will also create a scenario in which they will get their target person to gain confidence in their own abilities. With this type of con, the con artist will do whatever they need to in order to make their target person gain confidence that they are better than they really are, or better than the con artist. Once they have created that scenario they will slowly play the con out, to a point where a large sum of money is wagered and the target person is beat.

    How common is hustling nowadays in bars in the US? Here in Ireland (and I assume in the UK), I wouldn't say there would be any culture of it like there is in the States. I've never played for money against an opponent who appeared to be worse a player than he was, and I've never seen it happen to others.
    I'm an avid English pool player, but in recent years, I've heard of terms used in pool like "shark", "sneaky pete", "mark" or "sandbagging", and was pretty surprised that a lot of pool jargon in the US stems from hustling. I'd never heard of these terms before in any blackball game.

    I'm a bit curious about the morality of pool hustling. I also love movies about con-men, but I think there's some difference between a straight-up con-man, and at least what I know about pool hustling. Con-men are straight-up liars, and try to trick you into believing in a game that doesn't even exist. Pool hustlers merely try to deceive you about the difference in skill level between the two of you, and manipulate your emotions and concentration to make you play worse than normal. (Or at least so goes my limited understanding of hustling). The pool hustler doesn't exactly cheat you... there's no trick, other than not being completely honest about how skillful they are. Honestly, who reveals the full truth about themselves to everyone? We all hide aspects of ourselves for our own protection. I'd not be surprised if deliberately trying to distract another player isn't part of just about any game.
    Pool hustlers are likely more akin to the marketing departments of large corporations, or people who create political ads. None of these people really completely honest people, but a very sophisticated and more subtle form of deception than a straight-up con man.
    It reminds me of a few years ago when I went with my mother, to advise her on leasing a car (ignore the fact that leasing a car is generally a bad financial decision). She wanted to put down as much as possible for a down payment, believing that this would save her money. I pulled out a calculator, and figured out that she actually paid MORE money with a high down payment over 3 years, not less! The sales guy said something about how it lowered your payments. They were sort of quiet when I mentioned that this didn't make any sense that you wound up paying more money with the high down payment, a sure sign they already knew it was a bad deal. Now, what I'd say is this scheme was concocted by less than honest marketing/sales departments who study human psychology. They realize that the lure of "lower payments" was so much that people were willing to pay more for that than they should. Likely very few people pull out calculators and determine that it's a bad financial deal, and you wind up paying more when you make a down payment. It made me mad at the time that they were doing this, and honestly it still does.
    Was this dishonest? Probably.... but it's a very sophisticated form of dishonesty that plays on your prior conceived ideas. It's not unlike what I imagine pool hustling to be. I wouldn't go to a car dealership for the same reasons I wouldn't play pool for money. As Richard Feynman put it "I"m smart enough to know I'm dumb". That is, even smart people can be fooled by others who know your weaknesses and frailties better than you know your own.
    I think there's a lot of gray areas in any game about what constitutes cheating. For instance, in some sports it's officially against the rules to try to lose. It comes about because sometimes it's actually in your best interests to lose (like if you're playing in a tournament, and winning means going up against a competitor that you're poorly suited against). It's sort of a strange rule that you have to play at the best of your ability. It could even be in your interests to lose, and the other parties interest to win, but it's still "against the rules" for you to not play at your highest level. IIRC some tennis players have been fined for doing exactly this, which is a bit strange if you ask me.
