I read The Stand in 9th grade, the first act of the book, Captain Trips, is still absolutely terrifying and some of the best genuine dread Stephen King has ever written as you see society collapse. There's no monster to be fought, no way of stopping it. Tens of thousands of years of human progress and history are coming to an end and there's nothing you can do.

I know this is a two year old comment but in the novel (recently re-read it) they said the virus basically mutated constantly, which is why so many people could catch it and seem to beat it but then would succumb by the next mutation while it was in their system. So some strains were apparently extremely fast acting while others were slower. In the mini-series it's pretty haphazard for sure though, and I remember when I watched it as a kid I thought the same thing, and that it was really inconsistent since it showed all the scientists dying instantly in the opening but then it seemed like most people lived for a while and died slowly.
