Love hearing your process - gives me good food for thought when looking at my own consumption habits! Excited to follow along and see what you discover over the year
Thanks so much Rachel! I'm really glad you enjoyed the video
These videos are a perfect representation of my internal thought process! It helps me stress less about the decisions I make, thank you! I don’t buy much makeup or clothing. I’ve been panning skincare, my biggest issue is buying food out of the house! While i’m following your process my entire focus has been on eating at home and limiting food waste. It’s really fun to follow your journey while focusing on our own problem areas!
Yes, I totally hear you! I love getting inspiration from others to apply to our own lives.
I wish I could give this 100 thumbs up! Thank you so much for this video and the honesty. I really loved listening to this
Thank you so much Savannah! I'm so glad this video resonated with you
Just food for thought. I worked in a bra store for years. Try using a laundry bag that will help from them getting caught. I think that bra is from Aerie and they used to have free ones we could sometimes give out when you go in the stores. However, every bra store and bra I’ve ever seen says not to put in the dryer because it increases the chances that it will get ruined. I just pull mine out and it’s easy to just throw them on a doorknob to dry. Just something to think about to get more use out of them and something I’m personally passionate about. Great videos! I’m doing a no buy after years of working in retail and you’ve been a big inspiration! Thanks!
Thanks for the reminder. For all of my bras with underwire they don't go in the drier. I do put my bras without underwire through the drier as I mentioned. Your comment made me think about this distinction. I keep the underwire ones out because I think of them as special and worth taking care of but I don't view my other ones that way so I don't take as good care of them 🤔 thanks for the comment! A laundry bag is also in my future
I don’t put any of my bras in the drier regardless if they have wire or not - and in my experience they last forever. I wash gentle cycle, cold water and hang to dry. From a minimalist standpoint by not using the drier you are saving energy and saving on your bills :)…
You're certainly right. This is a habit I'd like to change 👍👍
Things like tea or vitamins that you will use up within this year/in a timely manner, I wouldn't count them towards you total number of stuff in since they're similar to food and are ment to be consumed. But the David's Tea being more of an indulgent purchase I would count.
In regards to having just 1 cleanser instead of 1 at the sink and 1 in the shower, I refill an empty travel cleanser bottle from the larger container in the shower. I still have 2 items, but I only bought the 1 cleanser. This small travel container is also what I throw in my toiletry bag if I'm actually traveling somewhere. Basically, if I get a gift with purchase beauty product with a good container that's easily refillable and doesn't leak, I use it for traveling. My travel shampoo and conditioner bottles were originally Victoria's Secret lotion gifts with purchase, and I've had them for 4+ years now.
I'd also be interested to see how many travel sized beauty items you can finish this year. I've surprised myself with how long I can postpone needing to purchase a certain type of item by just using all my travel sizes/samples.
Thanks for all your input! I really like your saving of the containers. This is a great suggestion for traveling and my shower/sink cleanser thing 😅 I do want to try using one to see how that goes first.
I see what you mean about the practical items being used up in less than a year, likely less than 3-4 months so they really wouldn't be an "accumulation" of stuff. I might decide to take them out but I'm also curious about the amount of things I use up even if I repurchase. This might just be an interesting area to track (for me at least because I like all the data)
Just food for thought for future purchases: I just watched a CZcams video about online returns, and the hidden environmental costs of online returns are honestly staggering. Just thought of it when you were discussing your feelings about the book.
Thanks for bringing this to my attention Angela!
It's really sad that buying something new only when you finished the previous product in that category is unusual these days, when it should be the norm. The last time I purchased a non-replacement was November 2020, when I bought 4 new single eyeshadows (and also repurchased 3 singles in the same order). There's very few "holes" in my collection, so I typically only spend money on replacements.
I'm also big advocate for using items that are just okay, instead of replacing them immidiately for something "perfect" (which often turns out to be not quite perfect anyway and will be decluttered eventually). I think in the minimalism space there's too much focus on that "perfect" item that replaces all other items in that category and quenches the desire for shopping forever, because that just doesn't exist. Even if it does exist in some categories, it's not realistic for all aspects of life.
Great video! I resonated with so much of what you said, I have been on a low buy since November 29th mainly for makeup and have only made 1 purchase mid December, this is a huge thing for me as in 2021 I purchased alot. I'm starting to feel my mindset change, and it's flowed into other areas of my life. I earn frequent flyer points from my credit card and the points from December dropped by more than half and this is a direct reflection of my spending habits changing. Looking forward to continuing my journey of being happy with what I already own in 2022 and watching your videos as they keep me motivated 😊
I love hearing this! I'm so proud of you Eden 👏 🥰
'The privilege to store things'.. this hits home..
I feel like I have these same values you mention but I think you’re being well too hard on yourself. We are all human, we are not perfect, we make mistakes and we have to accept that. We also then learn from those mistakes and make better choices. Try not to focus too much on the negative and think positive. You know what you want to do going forward. You can do this. 😀
Yes Rachel you're totally right! I can be ruthless to myself and see that view as normal. You're right I need to be kinder. I know I can do it and I also believe that as long as you learn it's not a mistake, which I really hope to do. Also, thanks for your kindness 💕
I heard somewhere that the expected lifespan of a bra is meant to be about six months, so compared to that, your bra lasted quite a while! For me, I just got rid of bras last year that I had since I met my husband fifteen years ago, but I have also had to replace some of my new replacements because the puppy (she loves to chew on straps) broke them. The dress looks amazing on you, and if you have occasions to wear it, I hope you do, but I do understand feeling conflicted about it.
As for my personal project, I did well, mostly. I started about a week or two into January, and I have been regularly going through my stuff and using what I have. I used one of my perfumes up and gave a couple away to others who will use them, so I allowed myself to purchase two new ones, one for bedtime and one for daytime. My mistake was buying a daytime fragrance that wasn't on my list of spring fragrances I want to try, but that looked exciting in the moment that I was shopping. So my wish list for daytime fragrances remains the same, and I am feeling really uncertain about the one I bought. And I tend to buy La Rive fragrance because I'm sensitive to scents and cheap dupes tend to be a little less strong, so I didn't spend a lot of money on it, but on a macro level, demand for items is what causes manufacturers to make more items, and on an eco conscious level, I don't like that. I have been cycling through my existing cosmetics and using things that aren't my favorites when I am filming so as to use them up. I almost bought a cleanser when I have two at home, but it is a cleanser that is inexpensive and readily available in a store near my kids' dance studio, so if I decide I want to try something else once these two are gone, it will be easy to find then! I keep finding that when I try something new, I don't like it as much as the stuff I already have, and that feels like I am so close to finding what I was looking for! Now if I could only remember that before I buy things.
after reading your comment I looked up the bra lifespan and they're really out here saying 6-12 months?! I have NEVER felt like my bra has died after 12 months. This feels a little like corps setting the bar low so buy more but i'm suspicious of most corps 😅
Thanks for sharing about your own project too! I feel you on the perfumes and I love that when you use your own things as a yardstick your stuff wins most of the time!
@@shawnaripari I feel like maybe the six to twelve months is perhaps for those who are larger chested than you or I, who need a lot of support? I don't know, but I heard it on a radio program as a question to win a giveaway and no one got it right, so we aren't the only ones who try to make them last!
You're right, that likely plays into it.
Yes, definitely only 6 - MAX 12 months lifespan for bras for me.😊 They are washed very often and the elasticity will suffer a lot, meaning the support will suffer. And I definitely need the support. There is no point wearing a bra if it doesn't support properly. Of course if you do not need the support, that's not a problem.
This video was great and really made me think about my spending for Jan! Would you be able to make a template of your notion page and share a link? Thanks!
I'm working on it!
Hi Anna, the video has been updated with the link!
@@shawnaripari Thanks Shawna!! Have a lovely day :)
When I saw the torn bra my first thought was to mend it. I don't know. Maybe I'm just good at sewing so I might be more inclined to alter, repair or improve clothing. I did that with a bikini top I bought used from ThreadUp that the lining was itchy and irritating. I fixed it and then pretty much forgot it was ever a problem. And that reminded me of a video I saw here on CZcams about this French girl who took her like $20 white go-go style boots to the menders when they needed fixed. In the USA it’s seems like we would just replace them and move on. I’ll find that video if anyone is interested.
I totally agree with you that it's really common in North America to toss away without trying to fix. I have no sewing skills and I don't own any basic sewing supplies either. I'm glad you've raise this point because I see how I hold this mentality too. I've previously mended buttons, but that's about it. I think learning to sew even to do some basic things might go a long way to helping extend the life of my clothing!
Loving hearing your thoughts and process, exciting to see how the project unfold. You’re right about the lifestyle.🌹😊
Thank you Maru! 💕
@@shawnaripari I been learning the lifestyle more now that we downside to an RV travel trailer but we’re loving it. Good luck in this project!! 🥰
That sounds so great! I'm really happy for you!
I really enjoyed the format/prompts of this video 👍 great job!
Thanks Ariana!
I loved hearing you talk through everything you brought in to your life!! This just makes me so curious about everyone else's habits lol. It's such a good idea to track every single thing that comes in - we don't realize how much stuff we buy until it's all compiled in a list like this. I should probably do the same.
Also it's so funny that you're talking about how you don't want to declutter items because they may just end up in the garbage - I filmed a video today and I was talking about the exact same thing regarding my disinclination to declutter 😅
I found this so interesting too! Tracking it is such an objective act without judgment and I love that!! Plus I can add my own information too. It is a little surprising because if you asked me before this project to estimate the number of things I bring in a month I'd probably have said maybe 10.
I'm not surprised to hear that from you but I'm interested to hear your thoughts
Really interesting video. I've tracked how many times I wear things to see what I like for almost a year now, but while watching this I got inspired to track what I've payed for them as well, and seeing the cost per use was definitely and eye-opener! So many clothes that I'm paying 20+30 eur per use still, that I don't even like that much... So hopefully this will make me understand more which clothes are worth spending money on and when to just save it. Thanks for a great video!!
Thank you Elisabet! Calculating the CPW has been a game changer for me too!
I know it consists of spending more money but I purchase garment bags from Amazon and my bras have lasted so much longer from washing and I hang them to dry
Love these videos! Inspired me to do the same! Also… please please share where you get your head bands from! Love how they add so much variety to a look!
Hey! I'm so glad to hear that.
The one in today's video and the other plaid one I have is from reitmans! The pink one I own is from h&m, and the blue velvet one is from simons! I think I've worn the odd one here and there but I'm not sure where any of the other ones are from. The polkadot hair scarf is very old from dynamite. If I were to repurchase that today I'd look on etsy first! I've done some general searches a month or so ago and found some really beautiful hair ribbons!
Great video 👍👍👍
Great channel 👍👍👍
👋👋👋👋
I was trying a low buy. Didn't make it to the end of January and already brought a few things of makeup. Things on clearance get me as well as scrolling online when I'm bored. It's not a failure but I'm try a little harder. Just got figured out what to do when I get bored
I'm loving your mindset Jasmine! Finding strategies to deal with your boredom/boredom habits/scrolling is fabulous. I totally believe in you, you got this!!
I’m trying to do low buy this year, your videos are helping. :)
Love to hear that Thali!
