This was so informative! I have done Onestroke painting for years, this is really refreshing to see the layers and what they actually do for a painting!

(Question for Andy included)
Hello Andy! I really enjoy watching, listening and learning from you. You are a natural at this! Such an easy and supportive voice to listen to. I watch all of your and Plaid videos. I love Plaid paints. I've never had an Art class but I have been crafting and making art of almost everything since I was very small child.
My beloved Grandmother aka my BFF instilled that passion in me, including great cooking skills. :)
Now that I'm 37, married 19 yrs with 3 kids, everyone says that I am just like Grandma ( Martha).
She was very much loved, admired, humble, and respected. To me, that's the greatest compliment I could receive.
Anyways, I do have a question. As I mentioned before I have never had any art education. How do you or how would I know what colors to mix for example shading or shadowing??? In this lemon video you used a violet. In the pear video you used an icy blue. Any rule of thumbs to help break this down for me so I may I figure this out on my own????? I kindly thank you Andy!!
Ps. Watching all of your videos in order has really made me confident. I've always wanted to be a canvas painter.
From Andy:
Thanks for your insightful question!
I'm very glad that you are enjoying watching the videos and painting the designs.
The choice of shading colors is partially a personal choice and also one of the end result you are looking for.
I shaded teh lemons with a darker yellow and a purple bacause Purple is the complimentary color to yellow. That just made sense to me.
The pear was shaded with burgundy and green which give a wonderfully rich, red color to the pear. The bluish color was a reflected light color to help round the pear. That color was a neutral bluish color added simply to give more contour to the shape of the pear. neutral colors, such as this blue color or greens that you'll see me use are often a great way to add interest to a painting without adding a distracting color.
I hope this helps you a little. The best thing you can do is to paint the designs and paint often. Your skills will improve rapidly and your eye will begin to notice subtle things in the paintings and you'll be able to make adjustments to suit your personal tastes.
Thanks for painting along!

Thanks Andy! I can understand what you were trying to explain. Although I have relied upon my natural eyesight instincts to see colors beyond the obvious, for example looking at landscape or seascape and seeing all the different colors that are there, not just the obvious blue, green, brown, etc; look beyond that to see the color details and light details (how the light and/or lack of light, shadows). I believe doing that and to learn a color wheel (for lack of a better term), basic color mixing like blue plus red equals violet and how color compliment and contrast would help me a lot. I already do that to some degree without realizing it with all the different types of art and crafts I do. Thank you so much Andy. I remember a lot of those little important things you always say and repeat. Alike becoming a better painter,.......repetition and practice is Key! The same key to any success in life!
Thanks again Andy!

Would you add a coat of sealer? If so, what would you use?
How do you seal the paint so the tray can be washed or used with food products? Polyurethane? Fixative?
This is for decorative purposes only. Our paints are not "food safe" so we just recommend you use it as a decorative item
I really, really love your lessons, but I just can’t listen to that horrible, redundant “music” in the background the whole time. It’s so distracting and just drives me crazy to the point that I have to go to something else. Please take that out of your future videos!
