Red light is incredibly useful if you know the purpose of it. Basically, it let's you keep your night vision. Your eyes take a while (20-30min) to adapt to dark, and using a white light will reset them, red won't. Very useful if there's moonlight and you just need to take a look at something or want to better illuminate your trail.
