  • So now you are about to try out BeadTool, how do you get started. It can be daunting beginning with a new piece of software, but this tool is very straightforward. In this video see how to open and save your patterns, draw and erase, choose different beads and colours and design for different stitches. Follow me next time on the BeadTool mini series where we will explore more functionality.

it would be great to see how to make patterns from photos.not just pressing buttons Picture--Transfer but full tutorial how to make a pattern that looks like photo and not like a bunch of colourful beads

Hello, I think that is a great suggestion. Personally I tend to do designs that are more graphic in style. I will look at doing a video that shows how to make your pattern look like a photo. Thank you for the suggestion.

Can you do a video on the differences in the starting bead? For instance, using the "Pattern" tab I find "Starting Bead" and the options are "Upper Right", "Upper Left", "Lower Left", and "Lower Right". I am interested in how that might translate to left handed beaders.

That's an interesting question. I will endeavour to do something on that, so please keep watching. I get a lot of questions on BeadTool. Thank you for that particular question, it is a new one for me, and there are left handers in my family too, so it's close to home.

Hi Lucy 😊 Would you consider doing a video in your BeadTool series about backing patterns up to a Mac? I’d love some info on that! 👍

We managed to solve this question, and I think that’s a great idea. Thank you, I will talk about that in a future video.

Hello! I can make my own patterns on paper but is there a way on how to tell how big the jewelry piece will be like to scale? Many paper ones have large beads

Hello, thank you for the question. When I first started designing my own pieces, I started with graph paper. However I found it such a nuisance when I wanted to change it I would have to redraw it entirely, I then tried Excel, which was just as tricky and neither of these ways helped with knowing the final size. There are various bead software tools that really take the pain out of the design. Some are cheap and cheerful, others complex, some you hold the work on your computer/tablet, others the designs are held on their servers. Some don’t work on Apple, or mobile devices. However they will all give you an ‘approximate’ size. It all depends on how accurate you want to be. So one suggestion is (and I do this myself) I will do a test piece, measure the size of the test of the test piece, and if this matches, I can be sure that the real piece will match the designed piece size. So I would recommend investing a least a little in a bead software tool, that way you can dial in the size that you want, and design to the size. They all allow you to choose a palette - for instance Miyuki Delicas or Toho Aikos, or seed beads of various sizes. I found that looking for the right tool for me, improved my efficiency in design enormously! And I could get on with the beading. I do hope that helps. Thank you for watching.

Can one use this software to create instructional pamphlets for various projects such as triangle peyote stud earrings and/or native fringe earrings that use brick and ladder stitch?

That's a really interesting questions. BeadTool is a very straightforward (but functional) piece of software. So I use it for straight forward patterns. It does brick, square, gourd, loom, peyote with various drops, tubular peyote and various RAW stitches - at least that is the choice on my version. I will often create the pattern, and then screen shot the pattern and modify the image down to the sections that I want for my patterns and or leaflets. you can export various things from the tool, but I prefer to make things up as I want to do it. Perhaps I should do a review on this point? Thank you for watching, stay tuned. Lucy
