Vipassana Guided Meditation - Insight Practice

  • This is a vipassana guided meditation practice. Vipassana meditation, or insight meditation, is the practice of noting what is arising in your experience. Starting with some awareness of the breath in the body, we will open up to to the other sense-doors of seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, and thinking. As something arises, we will note what is present and allow it to be.
    In this vipassana guided meditation, the purpose of the noting is to bring awareness to what we are experiencing without getting wrapped up. This helps us look at the present-time experience with mindfulness and not getting hooked in.
    There are many different ways to cultivate mindfulness and insight, and this is just one. You can find another form of insight meditation in our guided meditation at • Mindful Noting Practice .
    With any vipassana or insight meditation practice, it's important to cultivate some concentration or samadhi. We start this practice with a few minutes of focusing on the breath. As you learn to collect the attention and concentrate on the object of your awareness, distractions cease to divert your awareness away and you're able to look more deeply at whatever experience arises. This is important. Without concentration, the mind bounces around quite a bit and we can be unable to see what is arising in our experience. For more information about collecting the mind and building concentration, you can read our page and find guided meditations at oneminddharma.com/samatha-med....

    • @oneminddharma
      @oneminddharma  Před 5 lety +3

      @@paulsaul7674 Thanks for asking. Yes, this is the principle way we built insight in this meditation tradition. Specifically, we cultivate an ability to see experience clearly as it relates to the Three Marks of Existence: not-self, dissatisfaction, and impermanence.
      Pragmatically, this practice helps us over time to tune into the moving and impersonal nature of experience. Rather than grasping, clinging, and identifying with each sensation, we train the mind to simply observe. This gives us an ability to see with wisdom and be more responsive than reactive.

    • @oneminddharma
      @oneminddharma  Před 5 lety +1

      @@paulsaul7674 It indeed may (I find it calming), but it's important to know that slowing the mind is not a goal of Buddhist meditation really. The overall intention is to bring mindfulness to the thinking mind and change our responses.
      For something that calms the mind, I recommend a samatha practice like concentration or metta. These are two practices that traditionally are used to promote calmness of mind.

    • @dichebach
      @dichebach Před 5 lety +3

      With practice, the state evoked by this form of meditation can be returned to at will. So yes, you can practice the discipline in any restful posture. It is my understanding that, the 'standard' wisdom for the discipline is that the practice should be done in a comfortable, but not reclined, or "too restful" of position, but that is primarily because the intent of the discipline is to evoke mindfulness, not sleep. From a purist standpoint, it may be regarded as "improper" to used the practice in association with laying down for sleep as it would mix unintended outcomes (falling asleep) with intended outcomes (mindfulness). For a beginner this could undermine the capacity to advance substantially.

    Buddhi is cognitive process for buddhism.
    Instinct for Buddhisati
    Intellect for Buddhipanya
    Intuition for Buddhiyarna
    Dhamma (Pali) or Dharma (Sanskrit) means the plain, undistorted truth that the Buddha taught.
    Dhamma as taught by the Buddha is simple and easy to practice. It is about ourselves and how we can be free from personal suffering. As suffering beings we are deluded about the truths of our body and mind. However, if we practice the Dhamma, we turn our attention to our body and our mind and unveil their true characteristics. Our suffering lessens as we gradually come to understand the Dhamma more and more.

      Vipassana means insight in Pali. It is indeed a type of mindfulness meditation! Just one technique for cultivating mindfulness. The vipassana technique is specifically the noting practice and staying with the breath as in these instructions. However, there are other forms of mindfulness meditation as well! These include body scans, vedana practice, cemetary contemplations, and many more. You can read about a few different types at oneminddharma.com/what-is-mindfulness/.

    The word Vipassana derives from Sanskrit, Vipashyana. (to have deep insight into the nature of being) Vi-pash-yana. The Vi is as in victory and not vicarious. The pash is as in lush. The a is not extended as in father. Change the Sanskrit pash to pass (which rhymes with pus, thus) and there it is. Vi-pus-sana. It is not Vi-paas-ana. Unfortunately, westerners pronounce it this way, and even dictionaries like Merriam Webster advice pronouncing this way, which is wrong. S.N.Goenka, a modern pioneer in this teaching, pronounces it the Sanskrit way as Vi-pussh-ana.

My problem with this video is you are not teaching the intermediate meditations in which watching the mind is objective. Those are a completely different tradition. This is a practice that comes from Buddhism. Hard to compare two different paths/sets of teachings! This practice is not only for beginners in our tradition, but those with years and years of experience as well.
