Le Mans 1988 highlights - Jaguar topples Porsche

- Jaguar scored its first victory at Le Mans for more than 30 years at the end of a nip-and-tuck battle with the existing king of the place, Porsche. But it was a close-run thing, much closer even than the official winning margin of two and a half minutes suggests. And much, much closer than the German manufacturer imagined at the time.

I was there sitting above the Jaguar pit from 2am in the morning when I sneaked into the pits without a pass, till the end of the race. Fantastic memories.
beautiful cars with beautiful engines
That 7.0 V12 makes me drool
Best era of motor racing
Not really.
The Jaguar V12 is actully a extremely ugly looking V12, and the same goes for the flat 6 used 962.
You want a truly beautifull V12? Look at the Ferrari Colombo engine, or M120(Zonda engine).
Seeing the Porsche without that rally-ish wing is wierd
I absolutely adore the Jaguar XJR-9, one of the all time greats of endurance racing along with the Mazda 787B and the Peugeot 905.
sauber mercedes c9 and porsche 962 or 956 are up there too
because of gran turismo
What? You have to be challenged to not recognize that the 917 , 962, and gt40s were the greatest endurance prototypes of all time.... The Mazda is overhyped trash.... Winning 1 race out of 22 races in two years in competition... And the that one win was still from poor luck.......... Toyota gt1 great prototype all agree with you there......
Even the XJR-14 won more races than the Mazda 787B, yet it doesnt get anywhere near as much recognition
@@MiguelGarcia-vj7ooYep. It was already lucky to be running a distant third when not one, but two Sauber's retired. The 787B was never EVER catching them.
Man I WISH Group C was still around today....it was before my time, but I cannot get over how amazing these cars were.
Damn, THAT was pure endurance racing. No complex regulation, no penalties, no BOP, no double grids between the spectators and the track. The fans could feel the speed, smell the race !
5 Jaguars! I don't think anyone has the money for that in todays Le Mans.
@Hallison Michel Makes sense for Toyota right now but when they were battling Audi and Porsche, more cars on different strategies and set-ups could have helped.
@Hallison Michel Toyota proved that statement wrong multiple times.
@@georgejakob1451 LMAO
Thats cigarette money for ya
Hallison Michel what do you beed to participate in the race 😁
I understand they put in the chicanes on the Mulsanne straight but man was it epic to see these cars do more than 230mph on that piece of track
Can you please do a highlight for the '70 , '91 , '89 and '66 24hr races ?
Ah, 1988. The time when the WM88 broke the speed barrier at 400 km/h (248 mph) at La Sarthe famous Mulsanne straight
407 km/h officialy in 1988, but Peugeot engineers said they even reached 410km/h in 1987 but the official radar wasn't powerfull enough to capture that much speed so impossible to make it official.
No the Peugeot did 252mph ..in 89 the Mercedes sauber did 248mph
some says that the WM had all air intakes closed for better drag . Generally turbo cars could boost to realize a fast lap . A "real racing" speed is 380 - 390 km/h as the Jaguar did .
Please 1968 Le Mans. When everybody said that those Fords GT-40´s were obsolete, The Magic of John Wyer and superb driving by Pedro Rodriguez and Lucien Bianchi, proven otherwise against Porsche also.
Jan Lammers wins; one of his finest victories. He just wrote his autobiography, great reading!
This is a video series I can get behind
Finally some content on WEC !
Please hit us with tons more in the future, the championship deserves it.
Together with F1 and WRC the 3 crowns of motorsport.
And F1 shadows everything else. Even the crappy rallycross or FE get lot more attention.
DUcE Dev!lsTear even though rallycross and FE are way more exciting than the current F1 season
@@nathanlatter I'm not here to defend the current shape of F1.
I'm here to state a fact that historically WSPC, WRC, F1 and Motorcycle Grand Prix are the 4 most important championships.
Its a tragedy that the former 2 are getting kind of forgotten and pushed out by the new wave of Micky mouse kind of racing.
Its Mario kart and Crash team racing fun ?
Absolutely. But I'd rather play Gran Turismo.
FE and Rallycross are only a fashion trends and I promise you they gonna get forgotten very soon.
I dont think formula e will be dying anytime soon as almost everyone in the car industry is looking into electric motors. But yeah rallycross might die out in the end unless they manage to keep it refreshed and entertaining
Well said. Personally, I have always perceived a "car race" as an endurance one; like you 're in Paris and say "I will race you to Rome", etc. That's why I love Le Mans, Dakkar, Cannonballs, etc. Those are races that speak to the heart.
Those pit box are so claustrophobic
Brings back memories, as I was there. I have slides on Kodachrome 25 from the race.
After watching this I feel so lucky to be good friends and neighbour to Andy Wallace, who drove with Dumfries in the No. 2 Silkcut.
And Jan Lammers
Must say the old headlights on TV feels like I am watching Cosmos again :)
This is really the only way for me to emjoy motorsport content. But I enjoy it a lot.
Amazing cars. I was lucky enough to look inside an XJR-9 last year.
Was there in my new Jag' Sovereign, 4 days old. Met another jag from Switzerland outside tete Rouge stopped traffic but no one complained as they studied the New Jags. Happy memories.
Commie dot exe stopped working
Jagwahhhhhhh 🤘🏻🇬🇧. Just bought another XJR6 ! Love it
I remember watching this live. It was fantastic! Especially when Sarel van de Merwe overtook the Jaguar at the start of the Mulsanne straight and then the Jaguar slipstreamed past again!
Those silk cuts cars were beautiful le man has had so many memorable cars, 917, 787b, gt40s not like the newer cars which all very similar
michael williams oh please always crying about old times
@@edgiebraahhh7280 you don't like it don't answer it simples
@@edgiebraahhh7280 money and too much technology ruins things eventually. Stop crying that people preferred the older better times. It's just how life is.
So a Corvette C7R looks exactly like a Porsche prototype today?
Asinine comment.
It would help if Audi, Porsche, and Toyota didnt use the same color scheme. Telling them apart was hard when i first started watching
Quite a year for Jaguar, not only did they win in Le Mans, but several months earlier they upset Porsche at Daytona as well.
The Silk Cut Jag is my favourite Le Mans car, after the Toyota GT One.
Two of the best looking cars and paint jobs ever.
@@trainingtheworld5093God no.... All of the martini racing 917s and and the gulf 917s and GT40s are the best looking.........
That was a proper grid and race in the top class. Not like the one horse farce we have this year and last..
シルクカットジャガーはやっぱりかっこいいい
Man so many great things happened when I was born.
Wish we could have this now
Anos 80 e 90 melhores tempos do automobilismo.
I loved the Jaguar XJR. The low style that is conscious of the highest speed is the coolest.
Yes , I do remember this fine fight for victory ! This was a race I will always remember. The prototype cars of that time looked way better then today! And the prototypes had a real battle on the circuit, also way better than today. The last victory celebration of Toyota looked so silly without one, two or three equivalent competitors.
From start to finish it was clear who will finish, also years before when Audi had no competitors with their diesels.
The Le Mans Automobil Club should be careful by handling the prototype class. Otherwise the race would be uninteresting for a lot of TV viewers.
But thank you for this video and I know the spell " in earlier times all things were better!" but in these two years 2018 and 2019 the old time was!
Greetings!
Look at all the people in the pits, safety anyone...lol. How times have changed!
What a coincidence that i just drove the jaguar in gran turismo sport
So no one has a clip of the fastest car ? The Peugeot wm88 broke the speed record that year reaching 252mph on the long straight
it blew up after a few laps because they just wanted top speed and nothing else
What a fantastic race. I cried behind my Ray-Bans when Jaguar won. Will never forget that weekend!
That start of lemans 88 seems like start of le mans on 2001 when the three audies were in first second and thrid position
😢🏁RIP Johnny.🏁😢
What's the name of the song??? Just soo nice for racing videos.
Bob Bradley - Storm Force Epic
Group B are beast in Off-Road
Meanwhile Group C are beast in Track with top speed +300km/h and maybe even +400km/h
Thanks for Gran Turismo 4 to introduce me XJR-9 & Sauber C9
" Nunc est Bibendum " même sur les circuits inondés du Mans .
And I was there !
2 Mazda 767s and one 757!!!😎😎😎
Forza Jaguar!
How the hell is there allowed to be some many people in the pitlane with refueling?!?!
80s
I thought the same thing.. looked like an accident waiting to happen
Because we used to be brave and stupid.
In the 80's. *Nobody* gave a shit about anything 😆
People were in charge of their own safety. Committees and replays hadn’t ruined everything yet.
RIP johnny.
Anybody know the soundtrack name?
Can you do an highlight of the 1999 le mans please.
24 hours long please 🏁
jaguar special cars number one very very well olli mono mononen
wonder how fast these were compared to the later years cars?
Can you do 1991 please?
How did they change lthe rear tyres if theyre covered??
Fast screws- holders to remove the wheel pannel .
No mention of their gearbox problems at the end of the race?
Exactly what I was thinking
This is lovely and I would like to see the Mazda one. However, the title spoils the thrills of the race a bit.
Edit:. Johnny Dumfries leading is something I never thought I'd see.
Race is 31 years old, I think spoiling the result isn't really a concern anymore. That's like people complaining about the Le Mans '66 movie because we all know Ford wins...It's kind of missing the point...
@@GeriatricFan1963 I suppose you're right, just me complaining about nothing.
@@thomasbennett712 lol. Wait until you find out who wins World War 2

Why the hell are all those damn people in the pits?!

jk its cringey btw

Le Mans became a snoozefest today of Instagram influencers and other noobs driven the cars
race this cars on GT SPORT or asseto corsa with H shifter and clutch its fucking hard! respect to these mans
and even that wouldn't simulate quite what the drivers goes through physically
And put on force feedback, try to somehow simulate the G forces and try to simulate the bumps
No Rothmans no win
When men were men.
And pansies were a flower.
The Jaguar crossed the s/f 1 minute before the 24 hour mark and should have gone another lap. Being stuck in 4th gear that would have given the win to the Porsche. Rigged victory.
