It says the stems were used, meaning each element of the song (vocals, guitar, drums etc) are separated. I'd guess that the drums are actually unchanged, which is why they sound so good - they're the original drums. Everything else was able to be downtuned and tweaked individually. Very nice mix indeed.
@@Chundermuffin If I had to guess this sounds like the stems from Rock Band 2. For some reason the drum mix for the game sounded really different from the album version, maybe due to how they have to remix parts to highlight each instrument for gameplay purposes.

It sounds like they used a pitch shifter which maintains the formant (E.g. reapitch). Basically it means the tone of his voice doesn't get ruined when the pitch is lowered.

He states in the description he used Ableton Live, the pitch shifting in Ableton is VERY good at keeping the "sound" of the clip intact when transposing up or down, especially using the "Complex" algorithm within Live's clip editor.
Theres an essential part of pitch shifting no one ever does which is called formant shifting. If you shift the formant up the same amount you shift the pitch down, you get a natural sounding vocal.

I've just learned that this song evokes the feeling of a new beginning to many people... I'm glad to watch you being hopeful. To me, this song has always felt like a flashback in present tense, like he's living a moment that has already passed. Maybe it's just a projection of how I see the beautiful moments, I don't know.
