- NO ALONSO? GET AMORIM! Liverpool manager target assessed
With Xabi Alonso confirming that he won't be leaving Bayer Leverkusen this summer, Liverpool now know they must consider other candidates to replace Jurgen Klopp at the helm.
And so Reds reporter David Lynch has taken a closer look at another of the leading candidates: Sporting's Ruben Amorim.
Find out more about the 39-year-old's meteoric rise from coaching in the Portuguese third tier to winning a title against the odds with this deeper look at his career so far.
There is also an examination of the underlying numbers, which show a coach with major differences to Alonso, but some similarities to Klopp.
Make sure to let us know in the comments who your preferred candidate for the Liverpool job is now Alonso is out of the running.

Would Ruben Amorim be your first choice for Liverpool’s next manager?
Ruben Amorim has been my first choice never thought alonso would accept the Liverpool job it's possibly to soon for him
Yes, cuz' i don't see Alonso tactic suit us, they play different system in Bayer. Amorim play similarly with Klopp play style, and he got passion, love to develop young player too.
Him or inzaghi
Is it true that it would cost Liverpool around 30m to prise Amorim from Sporting?
If so is that not a deterrent to FSG?
Yes.
He deserves a chance.
Anything can happen obviously but he's worth taking a chance on
You forgot to add he got his best players poached that are now performing in the top leagues and he has rebuilt. Seems like our guy 😊
A very good point!
We're the players all Portuguese or had different nationalities???

You can't always get what you want
But if you try sometimes, well, you might find
You get what you need
Classic stones,
He’s been my preferred option from the very beginning, ticks every single box that I think any Liverpool manager needs to tick, especially his track record at developing youngsters, because the group we’ve got at the minute could play a real part in the future of the club and Amorim will give them the opportunity to achieve that
Gutted Alonso isn’t coming. I hope it’s Amorim. The others names don’t excite me at all and considering he rebuilds his squad so well after important players leave each season speaks volumes. The European record doesn’t concern me too much. Like you said to even compete with some of these teams is hard given the huge difference in financial power. Great vid David 👏🏻👏🏻
Putting Alonso into the Liverpool job so early in his career would be the same thing as asking a newborn baby to fly a 747. - Forget how popular he is was a player at Liverpool, and focus on the fact that he is way too inexperienced for that job right now. - Maybe in 3-6 years he might really be the man for the job. - Once he has won a few cups and titles with either/both Leverkusen or Bayern, then his name should be in the hat for the job.
Gutted. But can 100% understand it from his position - he's a young coach, still developing, and for his development at the present time, Leverkusen is the ideal environment for him. Going to clubs like Bayern or Liverpool would be big pressure at this early stage of his managerial career.
Amorim is a young up and coming coach, same with Xabi.
The job any manager is walking into is huge, it's not just replacing someone who is loved by all Liverpool fans, who ended the long wait for the EPL title, who understands and loves the city, but someone who is Liverpool!
Xabi has to be respected, he's going to win the league, he wants to stay loyal, and go again! If he can do it again, and have a run in the UCL he'll be create even more interest.
As for Amorim, like Xabi, his career is young, the league isn't as good as the German league, but he's don't amazing well, challenged and beat the best in Portugal, and if Edwards and the board select him, I'll back him 100%
Did want xabi i can't lie but respect his decision hes still a LIVERPOOL LEGEND & was a FANTASTIC PLAYER in my eyes. Let's go get amorim now OUR97🙏YNWA
Respect to Alonso for being up-front and not leaving everyone hanging on the thought (both for HIS people and OURS).
Ruben Amorim is (and has been) growing on me as a really good fit. He's a great tactician, man-manager AND crowd-pleaser. Let's hope he's up for it because I personally can't sense a better fit. Of course, he's also YOUNG!! I don't really hold with all the 'he's not been doing it long enough' stuff that people seem to keep spouting. Who knows, therein may be a diamond!!
Amorin could be tough to get - apparently this is what he said a couple of days ago:
""Liverpool? Right now I’m just focused on Sporting," he told reporters on Friday night. "I am very proud to be Sporting’s manager. I have a contract, and even more importantly than that, I’m very happy here. My focus is on beating Benfica."
Just on his European record, you could argue that he's gaining experience and improving. Klopp and every manager have to learn from their games before finding success eventually. Very few have much success when beginning
Thanks for the content
Appreciate your research and hard work to deliver informative videos!
I appreciate everyone who watches and engages mate. Thank you!
i think it speaks volumes to Xabi's character and loyalty that he will stay at Leverkusen - which will be to his benefit if he is brought in in the future to Anfield
YNWA
LOL. He would be off to Madrid this summer if they called him.
Great update David. Really interesting information and with the news alonso not moving this summer i like the look of reuben amorim.
I've looked into it quite a bit over the last few months and actually Amorim is much more suited to us and what we need. Alonso was wanted for his connection to the club and what's he currently doing but one good season, no matter how good it is, is still only one season. Amorim has 5 years experience winning multiple trophies. Also he isn't very good with youth and making players better. I'll be happy with Amorim for sure
Excellent analysis David 👍👍
Thanks John!
As they did more than 50 years ago keeping Paisley after successful Shankly, Liverpool should keep Pep Lijnders and let the Klopp regime continue 🌺
In a way I'm gutted about Xabi but it probably works out best for Liverpool in the long term. Say we give Ruben Amorim a season or two and if he exceeds expectation then great but if not hopefully Xabi will of gained the experiences he's needed and not moved on to another club where he has settled.
Love your movies. Godspeed.
Just to clarify, his 32 unbeaten run was only stopped because we were crowned champions after 19years, spent the week drinking and celebrating, and then lost a very close game against Benfica at their turf, again, after just winning the league the past weekend, so it kinda "doesnt count". Not only were we hangover but we played literally the hardest match that year in that exact week, and we still put on a fight, even not taking the game very seriously imo...
Interesting! That reminds me of Liverpool being thrashed by Manchester City in 2019-20 the week after they had secured the league!
Thank you David for an excellent video.
Thank you for the detailed analysis and insight.
I also think given that Amorim is a young coach, he may jot be conpletely set in his ways.
If LFC wants to follow a Klopp like system i think he may be able to make some adjustments.
Thank you
Been waiting for this one great vid mate i've done some research on Amorim myself he'd be my choice since we're not getting Alonso.I knew you'd give us all the facts and statistics top marks fella.YNWA👍
My fav LFC journalist . Deserves far far more Subscribers. Also Viva Amorim 🤝
Nice one Grizz! Top man
Great insight Dave,as always very informative,it would not surprise me the way Liverpool operate, we appoint someone who is not on the shortlist?
Interesting and informative video. David. Thank you. Do we know î he is fluent in English? A minor point perhaps but it helps helps. Keep up the work.
Yes. He speaks english very well
Plenty of analytical content as always, and delivered properly. And also without having to resort to over-dramatising the headline title to attract attention. David - yours is one of the most reliable channels for information. Thanks 👍
And let’s face it, anyone coming in after Klopp is on a sticky wicket! It’s going to take someone pretty remarkable to fill those shoes. Whatever the successor does, he mustn’t try to copy Jurgen’s unique way of bonding with the supporters. We’ve been spoilt over the last 8-9 years!
That’s really kind of you Colin, thank you.
Thanks David.I am glad u have faith in Amorim if we get him.My heads all over the place at moment thinking about Klopp replacement.,,,the end of an amazing era.Feel a bit easier now with your feedback.👍👏👏👏YNWA.❤🔴
Hi David, your take on his European performance is interesting. Exactly why its that way really needs disecting. I do believe that Xabi is more Pep like and the LFC fan and city culture leans more to a heavy metal style which Amorim seems best fit for. I like him though. While Xabi was first choice for on the pitch, Amorim was my first choice off the pitch with a second place behind Xabi on it.
Keep update on this dav..ynwa
He's done well every season considering they sell at least one of their star players every summer, yet they still manage to compete
Okay, I’ve not watched the full video yet, and you asked for us to say who we’re wanting before you make the case for Amorim.
Well, I’m totally sold on Amorim already. Portuguese, football is so intriguing, and has great quality, and Amorim has succeeded with his pragmatic, exciting and charismatic approach to his coaching career there. And importantly, he’s also a great man manager, which I think is very important once Klopp has gone, leaving many players, especially the younger ones in need of a lot of love.
These are my reasons to appoint Amorim, now I’ll listen to yours!
If we are convinced that Xabi is the one, could we try to convince Pep to stand in for a season and try for Xabi next season?
Really interesting candidate, it’s going to be an interesting few months ahead
Completely forgot about Inacio as well. We were linked so heavily with him last year. Would be very Edwards to use it to our advantage.
My worry is Hughes and Edwards like De Zerbi. For some reason he just doesn’t seem like a Liverpool manager. Don’t know what it is. Maybe he’s too much like Guardiola. Or it’s the gel and haircut.
Let’s not forget Amorim was a player only a few years ago and that might give him an advantage with the current playing squad. Luckily our squad is so good it just needs someone to progress them in a different way.
Nice video as always David. Why don't we just make Pep the manager, succession like the boot room days, everything at the club is working, Jurgen has laid the foundations, why not reap the rewards now rather than a new guy changing things for the sake of change.
Yeah, that seems to have been ruled out straight away and I’m not sure why. Perhaps it’s just lack of experience?
He fits the profile and seems very charismatic and passionate. Plus sporting play very attacking and high intensity football aswell. Gutted that Alonso is staying. But would prefer Amorin over De Zerbi.
From Alonso and Amorim and down to everyone else there is a huge drop off. No one really excites me apart from these two. Maybe Zidane if we go purely in "win now"-mode.
I can't see anyone else who has what it takes.
Good stuff on Amorim. Two things I like about him is that he's had a bad season and has bounced back. That's not easy to do at a club like sporting/any club really. Also really like the bit on developing young players. Huge for the group we have now and one of my least favorite things about arteta and Guardiola.
Also, this will sound dumb but I like a manager that is liable to go wild on the sidelines. Xabi is too controlled and measured for me. I think Amorim has gone after the porto manager a couple times! Again, this last point is just preference and winning trumps all so if he wants to be a monk on the sideline and wins the quad then I don't care.
Yes, but can he do it on a cold, rainy night away to Stoke
There's a few factors the powers to be have to weigh up to figure out the next LFC manager. Success, style of play, communication skills, personality, belief in youth, and of course availability. I have belief that we'll do a thorough process and we'll end up with the most suitable one. Amorim or someone else.
The reason Sporting have such good defensive numbers but have conceded so many is because the goalkeeper is so poor. Adan was a good keeper but he's had a difficult season and is now injured. Israel the second keeper is a Uruguay international but is quite inexperienced. You also have to remember he loses two or three big players every season. Obviously as a Sporting fan, I hope he stays. I'd even be happy if the media would leave him alone for a few weeks. Two huge matches, both against Benfica this week, cup semi second leg, and huge league match next weekend.
Interesting insight mate, thank you for sharing. Shows that Amorim is really good at putting a defensive structure together. Good luck in the coming games, hopefully Sporting win the title!
@@dmlynchlfc thanks so much 🙏 the fact that Porto lost last night to mid table Estoril makes it more likely.
Agree with you David as much as I love Xavi it's too soon in his managerial Career and I reckon he will come at some point in the future future, Liverpool's a massive club I think there would have been far too much expectation and I'd be sorry if he had come and not lived up to expectations of the fans,I do reckon he'll lead us to trophy's with more experience it would be a pity to spoil his chance the Portuguese guy seems to be the best choice and Klopp loved the Portuguese game so the mighty Reds will march on with the legacy and depth of squad since FSG invested in the AXA ACADEMY where the youngens mix with their football heroes to feel part of the LFC family and learn to play the Liverpool way #YNWA
Will be interesting know how he's compared Andreas Villas Boas record??
I believe Amorim is the standout candidate even with Alonso in the mix. Alonso has gotten all of the attention due to being an ex LFC player, but Amorim has proven himself over a longer period, has the perfect personality to follow Klopp and is in the right place in his career to make a big move having been in charge at Lisbon for 4 years.
Long time supporter of your channel. Can you tell me why Pep Linders isn't being considered? Alot of fans are wondering about that given that he's so liked by all our players. Appointing from within used to be the Liverpool way. Appreciate an answer David or address it in a video.
He announced his resignation shortly after Klopp's announcement.
Pep himself says he wants a less demanding club to lead it. When you think about it he has less experience as a first team manager than Alonso.
He was considered but the man wants to do what he wants to do.
Being lined up to take over at Ajax.
Thanks David! I actually asked Pep about this at the pre Carabao Cup final press conference and he was quite evasive about it. My take is that Liverpool always wanted to appoint someone who had already proven themselves as a head coach elsewhere. For Pep it’s probably best to cut his teeth in a less high-profile environment initially.
@@dmlynchlfc Thank-you very much for replying David. I regard you as a very reliable and articulate source on all matters LFC.
I have supported Liverpool since I was a boy in the Shankley era. I remember the absolute consternation when it was known Shanks had resigned. How could we ever find another like him. We turned to a member of the bootroom, Bob Paisley, a quiet unassuming man, with no managerial experience. The rest is history as they say. My point is that you don't always need to have managed at the highest level, you just need to be given an opportunity and have the inate qualities required to succeed. After all, he's learnt under the tutelage of Klopp and Klopp has learnt alot from him. I wonder if Klopp will endorse him?
The last thing we want to see happen is a situation develop in the way it has at Man United with a revolving door of managers' and the club losing it's identity. Let's hope not.
Thanks once again for replying.
As you say, Portuguese Primera is not in the top 5 leagues in Europe. Losing your star players each season won't help, and I'd argue those are fair variables to factor into his European performances. He wouldn't have that issue at Liverpool. So is it cup competitions? The won 3 domestic cups in recent years, Taca de Portugal '19, Taca da Liga '21-22 and Supertaca Candido de Oliveira '21. Amorim in charge for possibly 2 of those?
While Alonso has done well he has no track record and we don’t know whether he can flourish in a big club. I think passing on him is the right option
Nagelsmann has been my number 1 choice throughout but Amorim was 2nd choice. I’m happy for Ruben but I’d still really like Nagelsmann
Oh no not the continuation of the defensive highline ETH and most prem managers will be delighted
Big Ange is a big Liverpool fan.
Xabi is preferred because he will probably win the league but what if they didn't? still best option?? He might be the next Guardiola and if so will want to win with the best teams so Madrid will be nailed on. Was Xabi the first choice? Maybe something different is coming that nobody saw
Get Armoni to replace Klopp?? I'm disappointed 😮😮😢😢😢
Yes I agree with you
What im impressed with, Loses Urgate, Paulinha, Nunes Porro, Mendes. Still on for title
Best analysis I've watched regarding Amorim. Agree with your thoughts on high press related to our injuries. Hopefully with better players, more experience and Anfield behind him his European record will improve. From what I see, AmorIN for me, good stuff as always David.
Nice one Andy. Enjoyed doing the research for this one as I learned a lot about Amorim. Loads there to be encouraged by, that’s for sure.
@@dmlynchlfcI agree David, seemingly could be a shrewd appointment. It is impossible to replace Klopp but the more I hear about Amorim the more I am enticed by the prospect. Great work and I look forward to your next video.
i am FSG know who they want not the media
Amorim is a better manager right now. Do not get this obsession over Alonso. He played for us for a few years 15 years ago and that's not a reason to appoint him manager over someone like Amorim who has a much better CV and is far more proven.
To be honest, I don’t feel like the Alonso hype has anything to do with his Liverpool links. He took over Leverkusen when they were near the relegation zone last season and they haven’t lost a single game in this campaign. That is crazy! He’s clearly the best young manager in Europe at the moment. Though Amorim has shown real promise, too.
Disappointed but not surprised, now let's move in and make amorim our manager
Prefer Nagelsmann more similar too Klopps style of play
Sven-Göran Eriksson as interim.
He’s had a very short career only in a 2nd tier league. His home league. He’d be a target for Brighton to replace de Zerbi.
Not remotely qualified to be Liverpool’s next manager imo.
Unai Emery is the most qualified manager by far for the job if available.
Eveni if Alonso had come he would have left in 3 or 4 years for Real Madrid so it would have been quite an unstable situation
Big gamble for Xabi. IF we wanted him and hes said no, Liverpool may never ask again. I hope we dont. Amorim is the next best option. Or Pep to move into head coach.
If it’s meant to be he will return one day but not today

@@dmlynchlfc no problems familiu
Amorim’s short managerial career has been in the Portuguese league, which ain’t exactly a top top league. Let’s pray the powers that be at Liverpool FC get their decision right and appoint the right man. LFC supporters only remember too well the years under Roy Hodgson and Brendan Rodger 😬
Real Madrid have sent a signal to him! he will be there within two years. Cant blame him.
The whole its just the Portuguese league thing...come on. Didn't they surpass France in that a year or so ago? Portugal is far more competitive than France.
GET PEP!!!! 😅
Amorim has won Europe's 6th or 7th best league and a few Portuguese league cups. He has done nothing noteworthy in European competitions. It sounds very like Ten Hag being hyped up when he was at Ajax. Although Ten Hag was much better in Europe than Amorim, hammering him 4-2 at home and 5-1 away when Sporting Lisbon met Ajax in 2021.
What's your alternative?
Who will take the job? If the choice was Amorim, De Zerbi or Nagelsmann I would choose the guy who managed Bayern Munich and Germany.@@dukeslim5844
My first choice is whoever Edwards and his team of data dorks think is the best choice.
Is Pep ljinders out of the running?
Would be interesting how he works with Nunez with his Portuguese league background. I think as long as he shows passion and has a bit of bite then that’s all we ask for isn’t it. No one is going to be Klopp but if he can connect with the fans he could do really well.
Also- could we get Palhinha on the cheap-ish with their connection? Would be a great squad player for a few years.
Also- think about how we have used the Portuguese league for coaches and players over the past couple of years. Clearly a decent league.
Maybe I’m just trying to sell it to myself after losing out on Alonso but let’s be honest he’s got his sights set on Madrid. He’ll stay another year at Bayer L and then take the Madrid job if he’s still doing well.
YNWA
If Amorim is so successful at Sporting why would he want to leave ?
Excellent point, I can't think of any example in any walk of life where someone has been successful and decides to move to a bigger challenge. Certainly no footballer or football manager has ever moved to a bigger league or club once they have experienced some success. Not one
It’s a smaller league and club, wouldn’t you as a manager want to improve your level at a huge club in a top league. Would a manager in division 3 who’s top of the league turn down a premier league club because they are comfortable and doing well in div3 ? I think they would choose the prem league 👍
@@aotea6983 is this meant to be ironic
@@Iamspartacus1971No irony whatsoever. Sarcasm tho, an absolute masterclass! Kudos.
The same reason why Mourinho, Ferguson, and Wenger left the Portugese, Scottish, and Japanese league. The EPL is a top league that presents a bigger challenge for talented and ambitious managers.
Crazy people 😂😂 😂 De Zerbi is the only option now.
Xabi like Bellingham had Madrid written all over his forehead
Who is going to inspire the second half magic and amazing comebacks without klopp and his team
Random question perhaps but can he speak English fluently?
I believe so! I’ve seen clips of his answering questions in English.
Great vid. 100% Agree. It's quite obviously Amorim. No one else is a more complete option currently. Devastated Klopp's leaving but really excited about the prospect of Amorim replacing him. Plus if it doesn't work out, we can look at Alonso again next season. Win-win for me.
Thanks for the video. I wanted Amorim before Alonso actually. More natural tactical fit and playing style (long vertical passes compared to short, horizontal passes), won trophies in a major league, and we can tap the Portugese market for even more players. Also, if it doesn't work out, Alonso can come later. I understand why Alonso didn't want to come - tough to follow Klopp. Look at what happened to Moyes at United...
David, the Portuguese league is so inferior from the Prem don’t forget. If we do get Amorim there’s no doubt it’ll be a risk. Also, Hughes and his Bournemouth Backroom staff this is another Risk. It’s a Massive Level from Bournemouth to the greatest Football Club in British History!!! TBH nobody can step into the shoes Klopp will leave behind no matter who it is… Having said that, We have to give this Amorim fella a chance, if we get him that is…
Thanks David excellent analytical stream mate!!! UTFR
Agree with you mate, but i'd take Amorim and give him time, Edwards with the new backstaff team too, exciting time ahead for us. Edwards and the backstaff team gonna takeover the recruitment strategic plan with full support from FSG this time.
How many quality players come from the Portuguese League though? And coaches for that matter.
There's an argument to be made that the league Xabi is plying his trade in now is also inferior to the Prem... although not so much. So it would still be a risk whatever manager
The inferior league argument is trotted out every season? Mourinho came from Portugal. Suarez came from Eredivisie. Klopp came from Bundesliga. LFC missed out on VVD because he was playing in Scotland. Ended up paying big money. Kevin Keegan was rejected by an inferior league club told he was too small...became best European player. So inferior?
While Amorim looks impressive, I'd prefer a manager with experience of the prem or another top league and/or a decent record in Europe. So I'd opt for Franks or De Zerbi. Both speak well and have that eccentric side.
I would be happy with either Amorim or De Zerbi, believe they fit Liverpool and showed their qualities, highly regarded by coaches and players alike, the way they play is what you would love to see at Liverpool, good personalities, they might be better fits than Alonso honestly
Are Liverpool difficult to break down ? because i must be imagining our goalkeepers being put into one on one situations every single game having to pull of worldies. Teams cut us open easily
They’ve consistently been one of the best defensive sides in Europe under Klopp to be fair.
@@dmlynchlfc yeah they have but this season specifically the good defensive stats in my opinion is because of the keepers saving us time and time again ,also poor poor finishing by other teams after cutting us open that's the Liverpool system not individuals. We like to go 1-0 behind a lot this season I'm watching using what I see with my own eyes and see the chances we give up and somehow get away with .18/19.. 19/20 we were brilliant defensively under klopp. I wonder how many times Brighton are going to cut us open tomorrow and we either save them or they miss ultimately we will still win the game probably 3-1. Statistics looking great
What happened to their darling boy Stevei G?
Sunning himself and earning wealth in Saudi
Does Amorim speak English .t
Amorim is not going to Liverpool you lot going to have to settle for Sam Allardyce. Apparantly he has already signed his 10 year contract!!
Anyone mentioned Marco Silva
This fella, will be good for us. And difference in playing style. The Brighton one has too much emotion and has that it’s all about me too. Not what we want.
PEP LJINDERS!!
⛔️ I rather have one of Klopp’s assistants, Lijnders or Krawietz, as temporary coach for awhile 🤏
Me too. I think Pep Lijnders would do well.
Xabi obviously holding out for the Chelsea job.
He is not stupid
overrated and he knows it that’s why he’s not moving..if you know you know💡
i think we should get gerrard
Does he speak english ?

Why are Amorim OR De Zerbi rated lower than Alonso(?) - In sensible/real-life/real-world terms, Alonso is a literal infant in his managerial career. - It’s a complete joke for someone with his level of inexperience to be mentioned around the soon-to-be vacant job at Liverpool. - The know-it-all pundits and journalists are fucking idiots talking up this kind of rubbish.
I wouldn't say it's a joke at all. The reason De Zerbi is rated below Alonso is because he hasn't won anything. Alonso is in his first full season at Leverkusen and is about to win their FIRST EVER Bundesliga title. That's an insane overachievement. Amorim, fair enough, maybe he should be level pegging, but it's a weaker league and he doesn't have the Europe factor, either, where Alonso seems to have started very well.
The choice isn't that amazing. If we can't get Amorim, go for Pep Lijnders.
Please Poundland FC where never in a million years getting Alonso, if Real Madrid are sniffing he’s only going one place, probably the deal has already been done behind closed doors, just like Bellingham and everyone we have been linked with under FSG Liverpool never get their man, unless we have coutinho money, fool me once……..
Amorim unproven outside of Portugal, De zerbi hasn't won a major trophy. I personally would want Edwards and co to convince Pep Linders to stay on as manager. Makes most rational choice for me
Pep is technically the least experienced of all the options plus he wants to learn the ropes of manager in a less pressured atmosphere. Ajax I hear is his target.
Amorim has won trophies at multiple clubs.
Alonso is about to win his first.
Both unproven in England.
Pep posssibly could do an Arteta but it’s best he learns the role elsewhere and maybe returns later
Yes, can't link of many more with Klopps pressing style that we want to keep.
