Applying Air Dry Matte products

  • This video will show the technique for applying two very similar air dry products to your reborn doll to reduce and/or eliminate shine.
    ***UPDATE TO THE VIDEO***
    I have found it best to apply TWO coats of the air dry matte products to the doll kit after painting. Both layers are best done using the pouncing method and wedges. I did experiment applying the sealer with a brush and allowing that to dry on it's own but the pouncing method is over all better, in my opinion, to reduce sheen and shine.
    The two products are FolkArt Glass and Tile Medium and Plaid FolkArt Matte Sealer. These two products are very similar and are applied using the same technique.
    In the video, I forgot to state that the FolkArt Glass and Tile Medium can be applied before and/or after your doll is painted with air dry paints and the Plaid FolkArt Matte Sealer is to be applied after your doll kit is painted.
    Either of these products can be used over the top of a Genesis painted doll kit, but I would advise against either of them under Genesis paints.
    I also failed to mention that your painted kit should cure for at least 48 hours before you attempt to coat it with either product. If the paint is not cured, both products will remove the uncured paint.
    I hope you enjoy my quick little presentation!

    It’s Been about almost 10 years since 2014 and I’ve been looking everywhere for a reborn tutorial with the outdoor matte! Im making my second doll but the glass and tile which everyone has been talking about is discontinued so I was worried my doll wouldn’t be made right! Thank you so much ten years later 😂❤

    I so appreciate this video, as it explains the technique so that the matte varnish is applied correctly- hardly any videos explaining the importance of technique when applying the matte varnish..... sealer. I first applied the matte varnish with a brush and ended up with an extremely shiney baby..... explanation for how and why technique is most important no matter what kind of varnish/sealer you use is not talked about enough. many thanks

    Thank you for this video. I followed your detailed instructions and saved a reborn Storm! She was very shiny and sticky and looked and felt like a regular doll. She was nicely painted except that her toes, fingers, and veining were too dark for my liking, and her knees looked bruised instead of mottled. Instead of washing her, I prepped her by cleaning her with alcohol pads and toned everything down before applying the matte finish. I admit I held my breath through the process because I have never painted a baby, but your tutorial made it so easy that my bargain baby now has the dewy, translucent glow and realistic skin texture of my full price reborns. She had been passed around on ebay several times and your video helped her find her forever mommy!

    Hello Lucy Sanz. For some reason I was not able to comment directly on your question, but yes, the Folk Art Glass and Tile Medium may be used as a primer. However, the Folk Art Outdoor Matte Sealer may not; it can only be used as a finish coat.

      I painted my ashton drake doll with acrylic air dry paints and she turned out fine. You can use them on vinyl. I use the ones at walmarts for 50 cents, in colors you use. Folk art or Apple Berry, and buy some medium from ebay or amazone. WM doesn't carry it. I use one drop of medium with each drop of color, then thin it down with distilled water.

    I use the same medium but find I need to thin it out or it gives a blue, kind of irredescent appearance. I had to strip and redo my daughter's Lane kit. But it totally makes sense what you said about pouncing too much makes it gritty/grainy. That is exactly what happened the first time i applied the medium. BUT i put it over the paint as a sealer and it made the vinyl look gray!!! Glad i started over and watched this again thank you so much!

    • @debbiehenshaw5921
      @debbiehenshaw5921  Před 5 lety +1

      Hi Heather! Were you sure to stir the medium up from the bottom of the bottle? I have never had it look grey or blue at all so that is interesting. If you need to add a bit of warmth to the medium, you can certainly add just a teeny bit of yellow or yellow orca to the medium for that finishing coat :)

I have a printed revision to add to the DVD adding one of the newer paints and the air dry products (the DVD shows my favorite techinque of applying Genesis Matte Varnish before painting with air dry paints). The DVD goes through the ENTIRE process of reborning from prepping the kit to assembly.

      Hello Heather, both of the mediums I show in this video can be applied after painting to remove shine that develops during panting. You can use the Glass and Tile Medium BEFORE painting if you like, but not the Outdoor Matte Varnish, it can only be used after painting. I personally love the Outdoor Matte Varnish and only apply it after painting.

    Hi Debbie! Thank you for this tutorial! Can I use the plaid matte sealer before I paint in place of the glass and tile medium? The reason I ask is because the g&t med. Comes in such small bottles. Also, somewhere I read that I could use clear gesso in place of the g&t med. Is that correct?

      The Plaid Matte Sealer recommends that it only be used as a top coat, not as an undercoat. So, it is best to use the Glass and Tile Medium before painting and the Matte Sealer after. :)

      Yes, the petite bottles are plenty to complete your first reborn.
      If you do want to prep the vinyl then yes, the Folk Art Glass and Tile Medium is the best choice. With the Folk Art Outdoor Matte Sealer to finish though, you really do not need to prep the vinyl unless your vinyl is super shiny and slick already.
      Yes, us the Liquitex Ultra Matte Gel as your medium mixed with the paints and yes, use the Outdoor Matte Sealer to remove shine/seal in the end.

    Hi Debbie; Just wondering where do you get your silicone dolls from; I'm guessing that they cannot be painted with genesis heat set paints; after a few experiments, I've decided that I truly like the outdoor sealer as a thin coat on dolls so that they wont crack/peel....have a nice day...!

    • @debbiehenshaw5921
      @debbiehenshaw5921  Před 5 lety

      Serena, there are a few different artists and places that I get my silicone blanks from, the main one lately being Lilianne Breedveld (Claire Taylor pours for her). Since silicone blanks are limited in edition, you just have to be involved in the silicone community to know when those editions come out before they sell out. Yes, they are expensive. No, you cannot use Genesis paints on them. You MUST purchase silicone paints for silicone dolls and never use your brushes from one paint to the other. Genesis paints need to have their own set of brushes as well as air dry paints and silicone paints. I too love the Outdoor Matte Sealer! I've never had a problem with it.

      @debbiehenshaw5921  Před 10 lety

      Yes. I have not personally used this over Genesis paints but one of my reborn friends has used it successfully and others have followed her lead.
      For additional education, in the tests I have completed in the nursery, Genesis painted and matted dolls only become shiny if the artist uses thinners other than the Genesis Thinning Gel in their paints and matte varnish. :)

    Hi, I seen another video of a lady using the glass and tile medium. She mixed it with her folk art paints. she said that it helped the paint adhere to the vinyl.. Is this your findings also? And, can i do that and also seal it with the outdoor sealer for a finish?

    • @debbiehenshaw5921
      @debbiehenshaw5921  Před 9 lety

      Hi Country Babies,
      Although I have found that the Folk Art Glass and Tile medium works well on vinyl, history has shown that the "over the counter" paints purchased at craft stores, such as the Folk Art paints do not have the proper structure and longevity for vinyl dolls. I don't recommend them for use on vinyl dolls.
      The Glass and Tile medium does give the vinyl a little "bite" which helps the paint grab onto vinyl which can be slick and slippery at times but is is the MEDIUM that you use in the paint pigments is what causes the paint to adhere/bind to the vinyl.
      I have not tried using Glass and Tile and the Outdoor Matte Sealer on the same doll but I don't really see a problem with that.
      Thanks for popping in!

    I just used the outdoor matte sealer on one of my dolls and it's taken away the shine. I have a doll with dark painted hair whose head is shiny ( the hair wasn't textured unfortunately but simply painted on with heat genesis paints ) and am wondering if the sealer will work on that. Obviously I don't want to make the dark hair a pinky colour or some weird colour. I'm not a reborn artist - just trying to get rid of the shine on certain parts of some of my dolls. This reborn is new so I don't want to do anything to ruin him but I'm sad that he's gone shiny so quickly. Thankfully. I think you may be able to rescue him. Hope so. Please let me know if I can safely go ahead. Love all your videos by the way. Very informative. So many hints and ideas. Oh, he's the Lyley-Rose sculpt like the one you did, only not as good as yours. I still love him though.

    • @debbiehenshaw5921
      @debbiehenshaw5921  Před 9 lety

      Hi!
      You sure can use the Outdoor Matte Sealer over Genesis paints :) I advise to give the head a soap and water wash and rinse it well. Dry and use the Outdoor Matte Sealer on it. I think you will love it.
      Genesis paints will begin to shine if the artist used odorless thinners with them even if they were matte to begin with and even if the artist used Genesis Matte Varnish (in most cases artists will also thin the matte varnish with the odorless thinner as well, which doesn't work over time). I NEVER use odorless thinners with my Genesis painted babies. I always use Genesis Thinning Gel and I never thin the matte varnish. Works like a charm.
      Let me know how your baby turns out!

      No, I don't think you have to worry. Once the sealer is cured it should be just fine with normal, damp wipe-downs. Soaking might remove the sealer but not a normal sponge bath.

      Debbie Henshaw Thanks Debbie. One thing I did do was not change a sponge often enough on the face of one of my dolls and boy, did I pay for that! It went all chalky and I freaked out but guess what! I waited for it to dry and reapplied it and it took most of the chalkiness away. You can barely see it in regular light and this doll had really shiny cheeks. That outdoor matte sealer is incredible! Remember everybody though, change the sponges often. Hello again Jillian. Try a moistened wedge (with water) and gently rub the area you want to remove. If you want to remove the Glass and Tile from the entire doll kit (assuming you have not glued in eyes, rooted hair or given lashes) you can bathe the whole kit in a basin of water. Make sure that you trust whatever paints you used to paint the kit with :)

    I used air dry paint for my first reborn about 5 years ago, but it's totally faded. After wasing the kit, Should I have sealed it before starting my layers of colour washes etc? I have more kits but daren't try painting any more until I know how to prevent the same thing happening again.

      @@sandrahaigh2976 No, not necessarily. The paints need to be well stirred from the bottom of the bottle in order that the medium be stirred in. Painting vinyl is a science. Sometimes the vinyl alone can cause issues. That said, for the next doll, I would recommend using the SCN Matte Varnish when you are all finished painting your doll. Let me know how it goes!

    So that means I can paint with acrylics and then seal with genesis? Thanks

      It is a little risky to bake acrylics so be sure to give them plenty of time to cure before the Genesis.

      Absolutely! If your doll is freshly painted, you don't have to wash it first but if this is a doll that has been loved on previously, wash all of the vinyl pieces in a hot, soapy bath, rinse well and dry.

    Can I ask; Did you paint your doll with acrylic paints or genesis heat set paints; I use genesis heat set paints, and I've tried your application here, and I have to say that I Absolutely Love Love it...but I'm afraid of it cracking or pealing off my reborn doll; How did you paint your reborn doll..?

    • @debbiehenshaw5921
      @debbiehenshaw5921  Před 6 lety

      Hi Serena, I painted this doll with acrylic paints made for reborn dolls. I believe they were the Art and Magic paints. I have used this product on Genesis painted dolls as well without any problems. The key is to apply the medium thin. If applied too thickly, it can crack, but you would know that it is too thick as soon as it dries as you will see that the medium is opaque white. Does that help?

      Yes,..! it does...!! Just wanted to ask you one more question; Have you ever sold a reborn doll with the outdoor matte sealer on it..? I'm currently finishing a reborn doll that I will be putting up for adoption; I'm just wondering if I should use the outdoor matte sealer, or genesis matte varnish; I know it 's a matter of personal preference, but I also find the genesis matte sealer harder to spread and it's grainy..lol..Any tips you could give me would be awesome..And ThankYou for getting back to me as quickly as you did; ;)

      Hi again Debbie; Thanks again for returning my inquiry; Have you sold dolls painted with genesis heat set paints that you have used outdoor sealer on them..? Have you ever had a complaint of the outdoor sealer coming off of them...I Really Do Like the outdoor sealer....I'm trying it on my son's reborn doll, and rubbing a bit here and there to see if it would rub off..It hasn't but if I rub on a spot, it gets a little tiny bit shiny...have you used genesis heat set matte varnish...and if you have, did you like it...or prefer the outdoor sealer....? Sorry for all the questions...BTW...where do you get your silicone dolls from...I've heard they are very expensive....I love your videos....Do you have any videos on facebook...k..enough for now :)

      I haven't used Luminaire products but unless there is a chemical reaction between the two, I don't see why not. At this point, just try a small inconspicuous area, such as the back of the head or thigh and just see how it goes :)
