100% agreed. so disappointing they canceled this show. I canceled my HBO sub the same night. This was my wife and I's favorite show this year.
You kinda need to read the book to see why the Buss scenes were so prevalent, other than that you nailed it 100.
I was really hoping the show was going to get its legs and run into a season three. Like you said, they battled the Celtics throughout the next few years, and having the dynamic change with new players and getting into Kobe/Shaq years was enticing.
Bird is such a dirty foil to Magic, that could have been a great competitive story arc to portray, because it REALLY happened that dramatically. Guess I have to watch Magic's doc to get those tidbits.

I was p***** as hell that they canceled this show. The casting on this show was on point. The writing was great and I know that they canceled it because of low viewership which absolutely sucks.hope another network picks it up
I’m broken hearted that this show was cancelled. Even being a Bulls fan, those of us of a certain age remember hearing and seeing the Showtime Lakers and Magic Johnson. It was such a big deal at the time and I agree with you that Winning Time was done so well. All the performances were great. This is another bad decision by WB/Discovery that pisses off viewers and leaves a great product in the dust bin. I hope another channel or streaming service like AppleTV picks it up and revives it. HBO and WBD did a piss poor job of promoting this series. They’re blaming the strike for not allowing the actors to promote the show but the channel itself didn’t do its own work for promoting it.
Also, in an interview on the Winning Time podcast show creator Adam McKay said they filmed those 70’s and 80’s scenes with an actual Ikegami camera that was used in broadcast TV in the 70’s and 80’s. This is another fact that makes this series so special.
I completely agree. Speaking of the Bulls I was really curious to see who they were going to get to play Michael Jordan since he came into the league after the Lakers lost in 84 and Magic matched up with him in the finals in 91. So much potential just for them to give up on it.
Totally. There was no understandable reason to cancel this show. I’m sure the bottom line was some internal $$$$$ reason. Nothing corporations do now has to do with pleasing its customers or audience. This was the time that made the NBA really standout and grow their fans. As a kid in the 70’s the NBA was just on TV during the winter after football season was over and before baseball season. There’s so much to cover into the Jordan years and with expansion teams in Florida with Orlando and Miami there was so much attention with Shaq on the Magic and Riley coaching the Heat.
The book about the 80’s Lakers could expand the stories into the NBA into the Kobe Bryant years and the dominance of the Warriors now. I don’t know what the cutoff would be but by the lame ending of season 2 we all know this really wasn’t the end of the series just a premature mistake by WBD executives.

Last episode was called F*ck Boston ? should be F*ck HBO, they have a weird way of ending shows or/and ending them badly (exp. Carinvale stopped halfway true the story without an ending, GOT had the worst ending ever). Cannot imaging that this show wasn't populair and even with non basketball fans or Laker fans at that, I think that they just don't care and its all about money getting new subscribes on there streaming channel.... The reorganization of HBO into Max-after the merger of parent companies WarnerMedia and Discovery-may have contributed, along with a new corporate strategy aimed at cutting costs and stripping productions for parts and tax write-offs.
That this had to happen with a show that I enjoyed this much really socks, I remember seeing the NBA finals in the 80's and now I got to relive it in a super way, the way the story was build up and combining it with true facts, the cast was perfect. ending of Winning Time is a big big loss...
